The goal of this study was to provide basic data for various parts of Rhus verniciflua (R. verniciflua), and based on these data, to suggest the parts thereof that may be used as food material along with the xylem. Analysis of the proximate compositions revealed that the leaves contained mainly carbohydrates; the shoots crude protein; and the stems and seeds contained mainly crude fiber. All these parts were found to be rich in potassium and magnesium in terms of their mineral content. The total urushiol content was the lowest in the seeds at 0.92 mg/100 g. The total polyphenol and flavonoid content were highest in the shoots and leaves, respectively. Physicochemical analysis indicated that the seeds may be used as a food material, along with the xylem. According to DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity analysis, 50% ethanol was considered appropriate as a solvent for seed extraction. Cytotoxicity analysis of the seeds extracted with 50% ethanol confirmed that none of the components were present at cytotoxic levels. The findings of this study provide basic information regarding the use of R. verniciflua seeds as a food source.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extract mixtures in high fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. In high-fat diet fed hyperlipidemic rats, oral treatment with Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extracts resulted in decreased levels of total serum cholesterol and triglycerides, epididymal fat pad (EFP) weights, and activities of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and malic enzyme, while the levels of feces production and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol were increased, compared with untreated control. Therefore, these results suggest that Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extract mixtures can ameliorate hyperlipidemia.

Shihwa tidal freshwater marsh was constructed recently to treat pollutants entering Shihwa lake. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal accumulation in soils of Shihwa marsh and sought correlations between several soil variables (pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and acid ammonium oxalate-extractable Fe and Al contents) and the heavy metal concentration of soils. Surface soil samples (0∼20 cm) were collected in June 2000, November 2000, and July 2001, and were analyzed for heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, As, and Hg) and soil chemical properties. The neutral pH and water-saturated conditions of Shihwa marsh appeared to favor immobilization of heavy metal through adsorption onto soils. The concentrations of heavy metal (especially Zn, Cu, and Cr) in soils of Shihwa marsh increased along the sampling occasions, suggesting that soils of Shihwa marsh serve as a sink of heavy metal. Among the sub-marshes, metal concentrations were highest in Banweol high marshes and lowest in Samhwa marshes. The temporal and spatial variations in the heavy metal concentrations of soils were correlated positively with organic matter and oxalate extractable Fe and Al contents, but negatively with electrical conductivity. These results suggest that organic matter and hydrous oxide of Fe/Al may playa key role in removing heavy metals in soils of Shihwa marsh, and that heavy metal removing capacity would increase with desalinization. However, the removal patterns of heavy metal by reeds warrant further studies to evaluate the total removal capacity of heavy metals by Shihwa marsh.

Amino acid analogs, like other inducers of stress response, induce the synthesis of stress proteins in mammalian cells, In this study, Drosophila Kc cells, in which translation is tightly controlled during stress response, was treated with proline analogs, L-azetidline-2-carboxylic acid (AzC) and 3,4-dehydro-L-proline (dh-P), Kc cells exposed to AzC or dh-P induced the synthesis of several proteins which had the same molecular weights as known heat shock proteins. However, in Kc cells, normal protein synthesis still continued in the presence of amino acids analogs unlike in heat-shocked cells. For the induction of stress response, the incorporation of dh-P into the protein was not essential, but the incorporation of AzC was, The stress protein synthesis was regulated mainly at the transcriptional level by AzC, whereas it was regulated by dh-P at the transcription level and possibly post-transcription level. During recovery, the stress protein synthesis stopped sooner in analog-treated cells than in heat-shocked cells even though the accumulated amount of Hsp70 was much less in proline analogs-treated cells, It could be concluded that the proline analogs, AzC and dh-P, induced stress response through a different mechanism from heat shock.

Albizzia julibrissin belonging to the family Leguminosae has been used for the treatment of contusion, sore throat, amnesia, and insomnia in Oriental traditional medicine. The water extract of A. julibrissin induced apoptosis in Jurkat T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells as measured by cell morphology. The capability of this herb medicine to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as beta-catenin protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. The purpose of the present study is also to investigate the effect of A. julibrissin on cell cycle progression. Our results showed that G1 checkpoint related gene products (cyclin D1, cyclin dependent kinase 4, retinoblastoma, E2F1) were decreased in their protein levels in a dose-dependent manners after treatment of the extract. These results indicate that the increase of apoptotic cell death by A. julibrissin may be due to the inhibition of cell cycle progression in wild type p53-lacking Jurkat cells.

The structures of Julibrosides I, II, and III, isolated from dried stembark of Albizzia julibrissin Durazz (Albizziae Cortex), were characterized as complex triterpenoidal glycosides linked to the monoterpene glycoside dimer, mainly by means of an NMR spectroscopic method. These compounds have a common structure comprising from acacic acid, the (6S)-2-trans-6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethyl-2,7-octadienoyl-6-O-quinovopyranos ide dimer, and α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1 → 4)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β-D-glucopyranoside. The diversity of the oligosaccharides attached to the C-3 hydroxyl group of acacic acid, an oleanane-type triterpene, makes a distinction between Julibrosides I, II, and III.

Propolis is extensively used in Argentine folk medicine. Alcoholic extracts of propolis from different regions of Argentina were prepared. The extracts were analysed for the determination of total flavonoid content (from 13.3 to 42.6 mg/g of propolis) by using the aluminum nitrate method, UV spectrophotometry and thin layer chromatography. All of them contained high total flavonoid content. It was also observed that all samples of ethanolic extracts of propolis showed free radical-scavenging activity in terms of scavenging of the radical DPPH but the highest activities were found for samples from Tucumán and Santiago del Estero. In all cases with 20 μg/ml of soluble principles, the percentage of DPPH degradation was different (Banda Oeste: 67.5%; Verónica: 45%; Forres: 35%; Saenz Peña: 20% and Juan José Castelli: 55%). These results may justify their use as a source of natural antioxidants.

The influence of growth hormone on bone formation, mechanical strength, and composition has been investigated in femur middiaphyseal cortical bone from 2-year-old male rats. The rats were given biosynthetic human growth hormone (bhGH) at 2.7 mg/kg/day in two daily injections for 20, 40, or 80 days, and all animals were killed 80 days after the start of bhGH administration. Control animals were given saline. All animals were labeled with tetracycline on days 41 and 69. Only in the bhGH-80-day group was subperiosteal tetracycline double labeling seen all around the femur diaphysis, and this pattern was found in all animals of the group. Double labeling subperiosteally at the posteromedial aspect was found in all animals of the experiment, but compared with the control group, a 400% and an 800% increase in mineral apposition rate was seen in the bhGH-40-day and bhGH-80-day groups, respectively. Light microscopy and polarization microscopy showed that this newly deposited bone was organized in the same concentric lammellae and had the same direction of the collagen fibers when compared with the surrounding bone formed before the start of bhGH injections. The cortical bone cross-sectional area was increased in the bhGH-40-day and bhGH-80-day groups. At the endosteum, scattered labeling was found in animals from all groups, and no differences in medullary cross-sectional areas were seen. The mechanical analysis revealed an increased mechanical strength of the whole diaphyseal bone after bhGH administration. When the data were corrected for dimensions of the diaphyseal bone, no differences in intrinsic mechanical properties of the bone tissue were found. No differences in apparent density of dry defatted bone, ash, and collagen were seen, whereas apparent density of dry defatted bone minus ash was decreased in all groups given bhGH. Correspondingly, a slight increase in ash concentrations of the bhGH-injected animals was seen. bhGH administration also increased the body weight, muscle mass, and total serum IGF-I and thyroxine concentrations.

Six phenolic antioxidative compounds [5-caffeoylquinic acid (chlorogenic acid), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, quercetin 3-galactoside, quercetin 3-glucoside, quercetin 3-(6-malonylglucoside), and quercetin 3-(6-malonylgalactoside) (tentative)] were identified from the leaves of Corchorus olitorius L. (moroheiya) by NMR and FAB-MS. The contents of these phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid, and alpha-tocopherol in C. olitorius leaves were determined, and their antioxidative activities were measured using the radical generator-initiated peroxidation of linoleic acid. The results obtained showed that 5-caffeoylquinic acid was a predominant phenolic antioxidant in C. olitorius leaves.

The flowers of Albizzia julibrissin are used as a sedative in oriental traditional medicine. The phytochemical study of this plant allowed the isolation of two flavonol glycosides, quercitrin (1) and isoquercitrin (2). The sedative activity of these compounds was evaluated, and both compounds 1 and 2 increased pentobarbital-induced sleeping time in dose-dependent manner in mice. These results support the use of the flowers of this plant as a sedative agent.
