L’eau et le feu sont intimement liés depuis la formation du système solaire, il y a 4,5 milliards d’années. La molécule d’eau participe, sous diverses formes, au magmatisme (plutonisme et volcanisme). Elle est notamment fondatrice de la phase hydrothermale responsable des évents hydrothermaux sous-marins comme des manifestations paravolcaniques (fumerolles, geyser, solfatares, lacs de cratères...). La phase hydrothermale reste malheureusement assez méconnue du grand public et les géotouristes emploient des termes souvent inappropriés pour en désigner les manifestations. Nous proposons, dans cette rapide synthèse, de préciser les divers termes et d’expliquer la géométrie et la dynamique des systèmes. Nous en déduisons qu’il s’agit d’un seul et même phénomène dont les manifestations sont différentes. Nous proposons de retenir la température comme élément discriminant, facilement utilisable, pour procéder à un arbitrage sémantique et technique au sein des manifestations hydrothermales.

Volcanoes are environments combining hazards and natural resources, the latter justifying the high population density living on many active volcanoes in tropical contexts. More than a source of construction materials, some volcanoes are considered as "water castles", providing important possibilities for drinking groundwater supply through complex and sometimes artesian aquifer systems. The Bromo-Tengger volcano aquifer system in East Java, Indonesia, is a strategic resource with its main artesian spring Umbulan, which partly supplies the second biggest city of Indonesia (Surabaya). For more than a decade, this resource has been under increasing pressure with an increase of water abstraction for agricultural practices, industrial development, population growth and is amplified by increasingly accessible drilling techniques. Known as one of the most visited stratovolcanoes in worldwide, the aquifer potential of the Bromo-Tengger was barely studied until now.As part of this thesis, a multidisciplinary approach was used to characterize the hydrogeology of the northern flank of the volcano and its downstream artesian plain. Geological and geophysical results have highlighted the lithology and the geometry of the volcano's aquifer formations. The outflow context of natural major artesian springs of volcanic piedmonts area such as Umbulan has been identified.The climatic conditions were characterized with the installation of new meteorological stations along the northern flank and completed by the monitoring of a representative watershed. Compared with hydrochemical and isotopic data, they allowed a quantitative analysis of the distribution of the recharge and the elaboration of a first hydrogeological conceptual model. The recharge covers the whole northern flank of the volcano (≈66% of the rain) with a preferential recharge zone identified at about 1000 m elevation mainly due to orographic effects. Conceptually, infiltrated waters supply a binary system composed of: a network of high elevation perched aquifers feeding all or part of a low-lying basal aquifer. This latter becomes confined towards the plain through a multi-layer artesian aquifer, explaining the high aquifer productivity of the area.A new measurement device at free-flowing artesian well has been developed, combining hydraulic tests and piezometric measurement. Their interpretation allows both estimating the hydrodynamic parameters and drawing a piezometric map of the artesian aquifer of Pasuruan. These last results, made it possible to define the main flow directions and systems as well as an estimate of groundwater transit time.A first steady-state numerical flow model shows good consistency with the conceptual model previously developed. It allows a better understanding of the hydrogeological functioning in the present and pre-exploitation conditions. L’hydrovolcanologie profonde s’intéresse au rôle joué par la molécule d’eau (sous forme hydroxylée ou moléculaire) dans l’individualisation des magmas par fusion partielle au sein du manteau et/ou de la croûte terrestre, leur remontée dans la plomberie magmatique, jusqu’à l’exsolution‑fragmentation grande responsable des dynamismes éruptifs explosifs. L’hydrovolcanologie superficielle couvre le champ des phénomènes paravolcaniques pré et postéruptifs : solfatares, fumerolles, sources chaudes, flux géothermiques, qui représentent un indicateur important en terme de prévisions volcanologiques. Elle permet de mieux comprendre la dynamique des lacs de cratère et des lacs de rift, souvent sursaturés en CO2 d’origine volcanique, susceptibles d’éruptions limniques. L’hydrovolcanologie présente une perspective nouvelle au sein des sciences hydrotechniques où l’eau est à la fois l’élément déclencheur, voire le catalyseur, d’éruptions explosives majeures, mais aussi un indicateur précieux en matière de prévision et de gestion du risque. Our knowledge of the physics of how volcanoes work has expended enormously over the past 20 years, as have our methods of studying volcanic processes. In seeking to understand volcanic behavior, volcanologists call on a diversity of physics subdisciplines, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, solid mechanics, hydrovolcanology, ballistics and acoustics, to name a few. Deep hydrovolcanology describes the water involvement in magma generation and segregation through partial melting into the Earth’s crust and/or mantle, magma upward migration in the volcanic plumbing system and exsolution‑fragmentation in the subsurface. As the magma rises towards the surface the confining pressure decreases, the volatiles gradually exsolve from the magma forming the gas bubbles which are distributed throughout the liquid. It is the connecting together of a network of these bubbles that ultimately causes the continuous body of liquid to break apart or fragment into a spray of droplets or clots suspended in the gas. In magmas, typically 95‑99% of the ‘mass’ of material erupted is liquid rock – at most the gas accounts for only a few percent of the weight; but that small amount of gas represents a very large ‘volume’ as it expands to atmospheric pressure, and is fundamentally important in producing explosive eruptions. Continued rise of the magma leads to further exsolution of gas and growth of gas bubbles through diffusion, decompression and bubble coalescence. The relative importance of each process depends on the amount of volatiles (gas ‑ mostly water) present in the magma, the magma composition and the magma rise speed. Surface hydrovolcanology is involved in pre and post‑eruptive paravolcanic activity such as solfataras, fumaroles, hydrothermal heat and water fluxes. It also focuses on limnic eruptions, otherwise referred to as a lake overturns, a type of natural disaster in which dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) suddenly erupts from deep volcanic lakes, suffocating wildlife, livestock and humans. Hydrovolcanology presents a new perspective within hydrotechnical sciences where water is a trigger in magma generation and segregation, magma rising and eruption style. Water appears to be a most valuable indicator for volcanic hazard assessment and mitigation, short‑term eruption prediction, and volcanic risk management. Understanding the physical behavior of volcanoes is critical for assessing the hazards posed to the ever‑increasing populations living in close proximity to active volcanoes, and thus for mitigating the risk posed by those hazards.

Ils en sont une manifestation secondaire. Water constitutes the raw material of our professional disciplines. It is closely associated with the history of life on our planet. In the first part of the article, we give reminder of the order of magnitude of the hydrosystem. The second part is concerned with reconstructing the history of water on Earth, using data obtained from geochemical studies as well as geological and astronomical observations. This implies that liquid water existed 4,4 Bn years ago. The analysis of impact craters on the Moon shows that the oceans must have been partially or completely evaporated several times over during the early history of the Earth. In the third part, we use the results of planetological modeling to look at the Earth in its astronomical environment and its historical context of chance events. We then propose a scenario for the origin of water on Earth and of life on Earth some 3.8 Bn years ago. L’eau constitue la matière première de nos métiers et est étroitement associée à l’histoire de la vie. Après un rappel des ordres de grandeurs des différents compartiments du cycle de l’eau, nous nous intéressons à la reconstitution de l’histoire de l’eau sur Terre, éléments déduits des observations géologiques, des observations astronomiques, et d’études géochimiques. Nous en déduisons que les proto-océans étaient présents sur Terre il y a 4,4 Ga. L’analyse des cratères d’impact sur la Lune impose que les océans aient été plusieurs fois partiellement ou totalement évaporés dans l’histoire de la Terre. Cette analyse est complétée par des données géochimiques sur les météorites et les comètes pour rechercher des signatures isotopiques. Enfin, grâce à l’utilisation de modèles planétologiques, nous jetons les bases de la présence d’eau sur Terre et l’origine de la vie pour en déduire l’horizon probable du vivant sur Terre il y a 3,8 Ga.

During the cycling of seawater through the earth's crust along the mid-ocean ridge system, geothermal energy is transferred into chemical energy in the form of reduced inorganic compounds. These compounds are derived from the reaction of seawater with crustal rocks at high temperatures and are emitted from warm (</=25 degrees C) and hot ( approximately 350 degrees C) submarine vents at depths of 2000 to 3000 meters. Chemolithotrophic bacteria use these reduced chemical species as sources of energy for the reduction of carbon dioxide (assimilation) to organic carbon. These bacteria form the base of the food chain, which permits copious populations of certain specifically adapted invertebrates to grow in the immediate vicinity of the vents. Such highly prolific, although narrowly localized, deep-sea communities are thus maintained primarily by terrestrial rather than by solar energy. Reduced sulfur compounds appear to represent the major electron donors for aerobic microbial metabolism, but methane-, hydrogen-, iron-, and manganese-oxidizing bacteria have also been found. Methanogenic, sulfur-respiring, and extremely thermophilic isolates carry out anaerobic chemosynthesis. Bacteria grow most abundantly in the shallow crust where upwelling hot, reducing hydrothermal fluid mixes with downwelling cold, oxygenated seawater. The predominant production of biomass, however, is the result of symbiotic associations between chemolithotrophic bacteria and certain invertebrates, which have also been found as fossils in Cretaceous sulfide ores of ophiolite deposits.

The Kawah Ijen volcano—with a record of phreatic eruptions—has its 1000 m wide crater filled with a lake that has existed for at least one century. At present, the lake waters are hot (T ≈ 37°C), strongly mineralized (TDS = 105 g/L) and extremely acidic (pH ≈ 0.4). By its volume, the Javanese lake is probably the largest accumulation in the world of such acidic waters. Mineralogy of the suspended solids within the lake waters suggests that concentrations of Si, Ca, Ti, and Ba are controlled by precipitation of silica, gypsum, anatase, and barite. Lake sediment is composed of chemical precipitates with composition similar to the suspended solids. Thermodynamic calculations predict that the lake waters have reached equilibrium with respect to α-cristobalite, barite, gypsum, anglesite, celestite, and amorphous silica, in agreement with the analytical observations. Significant concentrations of ferric iron suggest that the current lake waters are fairly oxidized. Sulfides are absent in the water column but are always present in the native S spherules that form porous aggregates which float on the lake. The presence of native S provides direct evidence of more reduced conditions at the lake floor where H2S is probably being injected into the lake. With progressive addition of H2S to the acid waters, native S, pyrite, and enargite are theoretically predicted to be saturated. Reactions between upward streaming H2S-bearing gases discharged by subaqueous fumaroles, and metals dissolved in the acidic waters could initiate precipitation of these sulfides. A model of direct absorption of hot magmatic gases into cool water accounts for the extreme acidity of the crater lake. Results show that strongly acidic, sulfate-rich solutions are formed under oxidizing conditions at high gas/water ratios. Reactions between the acidic fluids and the Ijen andesite were modeled to account for elevated cation concentrations in lake water. Current concentrations of conservative rockforming elements are produced by dissolution of approximately 60 g of andesite per kg of acid solution. Complete neutralization of the acid lake waters by reaction with the wallrock produces a theoretical alteration assemblage equivalent to that observed in volcano-hosted, acid-sulfate epithermal ore deposits.
