Le volcan Nyiragongo a fait l’objet de toutes les attentions à la suite de sa dernière éruption, en 2002, alors que des milliers de Hutus étaient hébergés sur les flancs du volcan, fuyant le génocide rwandais. Depuis cette date, l’O.N.U. participe à la professionnalisation de l’Observatoire Volcanologique de Goma (O.V.G.). Qu’en est-il dix ans plus tard ? Que sait-on du Nyiragongo aujourd’hui ? Comment s’inscrit-il dans le rift est-africain ? Comment les risques sanitaires (sismiques, volcanique et limnique) qu’il impose à la ville de Goma (plus d’un million d’habitants) ont-ils été appréhendés ? L’hydrovolcanologie profonde s’intéresse au rôle joué par la molécule d’eau (sous forme hydroxylée ou moléculaire) dans l’individualisation des magmas par fusion partielle au sein du manteau et/ou de la croûte terrestre, leur remontée dans la plomberie magmatique, jusqu’à l’exsolution‑fragmentation grande responsable des dynamismes éruptifs explosifs. L’hydrovolcanologie superficielle couvre le champ des phénomènes paravolcaniques pré et postéruptifs : solfatares, fumerolles, sources chaudes, flux géothermiques, qui représentent un indicateur important en terme de prévisions volcanologiques. Elle permet de mieux comprendre la dynamique des lacs de cratère et des lacs de rift, souvent sursaturés en CO2 d’origine volcanique, susceptibles d’éruptions limniques. L’hydrovolcanologie présente une perspective nouvelle au sein des sciences hydrotechniques où l’eau est à la fois l’élément déclencheur, voire le catalyseur, d’éruptions explosives majeures, mais aussi un indicateur précieux en matière de prévision et de gestion du risque. Our knowledge of the physics of how volcanoes work has expended enormously over the past 20 years, as have our methods of studying volcanic processes. In seeking to understand volcanic behavior, volcanologists call on a diversity of physics subdisciplines, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, solid mechanics, hydrovolcanology, ballistics and acoustics, to name a few. Deep hydrovolcanology describes the water involvement in magma generation and segregation through partial melting into the Earth’s crust and/or mantle, magma upward migration in the volcanic plumbing system and exsolution‑fragmentation in the subsurface. As the magma rises towards the surface the confining pressure decreases, the volatiles gradually exsolve from the magma forming the gas bubbles which are distributed throughout the liquid. It is the connecting together of a network of these bubbles that ultimately causes the continuous body of liquid to break apart or fragment into a spray of droplets or clots suspended in the gas. In magmas, typically 95‑99% of the ‘mass’ of material erupted is liquid rock – at most the gas accounts for only a few percent of the weight; but that small amount of gas represents a very large ‘volume’ as it expands to atmospheric pressure, and is fundamentally important in producing explosive eruptions. Continued rise of the magma leads to further exsolution of gas and growth of gas bubbles through diffusion, decompression and bubble coalescence. The relative importance of each process depends on the amount of volatiles (gas ‑ mostly water) present in the magma, the magma composition and the magma rise speed. Surface hydrovolcanology is involved in pre and post‑eruptive paravolcanic activity such as solfataras, fumaroles, hydrothermal heat and water fluxes. It also focuses on limnic eruptions, otherwise referred to as a lake overturns, a type of natural disaster in which dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) suddenly erupts from deep volcanic lakes, suffocating wildlife, livestock and humans. Hydrovolcanology presents a new perspective within hydrotechnical sciences where water is a trigger in magma generation and segregation, magma rising and eruption style. Water appears to be a most valuable indicator for volcanic hazard assessment and mitigation, short‑term eruption prediction, and volcanic risk management. Understanding the physical behavior of volcanoes is critical for assessing the hazards posed to the ever‑increasing populations living in close proximity to active volcanoes, and thus for mitigating the risk posed by those hazards.

The Nyiragongo volcano is located in the western part of the African Rift. The deep fractures allow the upwelling of gases before and after the eruption, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). We want to understand the behaviour of carbon dioxide before and after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano on 22 May 2021. The Nyiragongo volcano erupted on the evening of Saturday 22 May 2021 at 18:15 local time in Goma, about 20 km north of the city of Goma. The lava flowed in two directions from the flanks of the volcano, one flow coming to a halt in the northeastern suburbs of Goma, The other flow cut off one kilometre of the national road 4 linking Goma to Butembo, a major regional road vital for the supply of the city of Goma, causing 32 victims, the production of several volatile gases in the atmosphere, the destruction of 17 villages in the territory of Nyiragongo and the cracking of the ground in the city of Goma and Gisenyi. The Nyiragongo Volcano is infamous for its extremely fluid lava that flows like water when the lava lake flows, which is monitored by the scientific community of the Goma Volcanological Observatory (O.V.G), the lava lake is the seat of an intense gas production. CO2 is a gas that is heavier than air, asphyxiating, and deadly at a concentration of 15%. The variation of CO2 in the different sites allows us to study the behaviour of the Nyiragongo Volcano, one Month before the eruption, the CO2 showed an increasing trend in some sites and a few Months after the eruption we observed a slight decrease in all the CO2 monitoring sites. Nyiragongo is an important contributor of CO2 and SO2 to the troposphere. This 2021 eruption is similar to the one of 17 January 2002, which caused the death of about 100 people and the evacuation of several people. The most deadly eruption of Nyiragongo was in 1977, when more than 600 people died.Post-eruption seismic activity was characterised by a large number of earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 or more. A few earthquakes of magnitudes greater than 3.5 have been recorded by global seismic networks (USGS), the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.2 in 2002.Compared to other eruptions that Nyiragongo volcano has experienced, the seismic activity before the eruption of 22 May 2021 was not too alarming. This is because there were no strong earthquakes (greater than or equal to 3.5) that preceded the eruption a few months before, as had been noted in previous eruptions. After eruption, exceptional seismic activity was noticed. Many earthquakes of magnitudes greater than or equal to 3.5 were recorded by the local seismographic network. Le volcan Erta Ale, situé dans la dépression de l’Afar en Éthiopie, est l’un des rares sites où il est possible d’observer un lac de lave permanent. Il est localisé à l’aplomb du point chaud de l’Afar. L’Erta Ale se situe au début de la branche descendante du point triple de l’Afar qui connecte deux structures de rift océanisées que sont la mer Rouge et le golfe d’Aden au rift est-africain intracontinental. L’Afar est l’une des rares zones de la planète où, comme en Islande, on peut observer la naissance d’un océan à ciel ouvert. Nous retraçons les grandes étapes de la mise en place de cet ensemble structural et nous posons la question du devenir océanique ou non du rift est-africain. La plaque somalienne poursuivra-t-elle sa migration pour devenir une île comme Madagascar ? Le rift est-africain va-t-il s’océaniser ou avorter ?

The mid-Miocene-recently active Virunga volcanic province lies along the northwestern side of the broad, uplifted East African Plateau, which, like the Ethiopian Plateau to the north, is underlain by anomalously hot asthenosphere. We review mechanisms proposed to explain the geological, geophysical, and geochemical characteristics of the uplifted plateaux, providing a geodynamical framework for the active volcanoes of the Virunga volcanic province. The presence of anomalously hot asthenosphere across a broad region, the long-lived and large volume of erupted material, the geochemistry of eruptive products, and the relatively small amounts of crustal extension south of the Red Sea can be explained by upwelling asthenosphere models. Gaps in existing geophysical data coverage and ambiguities in African plate kinematics over the period 45 Ma to present prevent discrimination between models which assume a single large mantle plume interacting with heterogeneous lithosphere, or two diachronous plumes.

The deep waters of the East African Rift Lake Kivu contain large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane. The release of a fraction of these gases, which could be triggered by a magma eruption within the lake, would have catastrophic consequences for the two million people living on its shore. Up to now the safety assessment of the lake was based on the assumption that the gas concentrations in the deep waters are in a steady state with a residence time of 400 years. Turbulent transport was regarded as the main pathway of vertical exchange. Recent measurements and the analysis of the vertical transport processes in the lake radically change this evaluation. The vertical turbulent exchange is negligible, as documented by a spectacular set of several hundred double-diffusive layers. Gases are mainly transported out of the deep zones by a slow upwelling with a residence time of 800-1000 years. Our results indicate that the methane production within the sediment has recently increased, leading to a gas accumulation in the deep waters and consequently decreasing the heat input needed to trigger a devastating gas release. With the estimated current CH4 production, the gas concentrations could approach saturation within this century.

On July 1994, after 12 years of quiescence, Nyiragongo volcano started an intra-crateric eruption preceded by a brief seismic activity. During the same period the biblic exodus of almost a million Rwandan refugees who crossed the border and entered North Kivu Region was accompanied by an enormous humanitarian relief operation from the international community. The un-hcr (High Commissioner for Refugees) had the responsibility for coordinating this operation. The majority of the refugees were settled in several camps in the vicinity of Goma, near the volcanic areas. Almost at the same period, another volcano called Nyamulagira, located less than 10 km north-west of Nyiragongo, began to erupt. The un sought the expertise of an expert in order to correctly understand and assess the volcanic activity. During this crucial period, different studies became necessary to protect the local population and the refugees: i) to assess the risk of both volcanoes; ii) to draw a volcanic hazard map; iii) to conduct measurements of the volumes of lava injected within the crater of Nyiragongo and iv) to evaluate different scenarios for a possible outside-crater eruption of Nyiragongo with potential impact on human settlements especially the refugee camps in the Goma area. Other possible hazards related to this area are lateral/peripheral eruptions of Nyamulagira, and poisonous CO 2 emissions from dry vents called mazukus (not discussed in this paper), mainly located in the vicinity of Lake Kivu shore.

Virunga volcanics in the western rift of the East African Rift system (EARS) show silica-undersaturated, ultra-alkaline, alkalic-mafic compositions. The two active Virunga volcanoes, Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira, are 15 km apart. Nyiragongo shows unusual compositions not seen globally and has the lowest recorded viscosity among terrestrial magmas while Nyamuragira is unusually effusive. These volcanoes occur along the fringes of a topographic uplift within the EARS. We analyzed major, trace elements and Nd–Sr–Pb isotopes in Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira lavas including samples from 2002, 2003 and 2004 eruptions.
