Characteristics of Decrease Effect in Fouling on Plate Heat Exchanger Using Air Bubble

Authors:

Abstract

Generally, it is a method to remove the fouling cleaning the plate heat exchanger with chemicals or polishing with a brush or cloth after stopping the equipment and disassembling heat exchanger. However, the equipment must be stopped and taken apart when using this method, which causes an unnecessary work to assemble again after cleaning it. In this study, it has developed and tested the equipment which can automatically clean the fouling on plate heat exchanger at regular intervals with air bubbles. It indicated that the overall heat transfer coefficient had decreased without significant differences similar to that calculated without air bubbles until after 72 hours when making air bubbles to remove fouling ingredient on the surface of heat transfer area every 10 minutes per 2 hours. However, it showed that there was a 10% higher of heat transfer effect compared to the case without air bubbles of after 192 hours.

Wastewater heat recovery heat pump systems use heated wastewater from public baths or factories as the heat pump`s heat source. Generally, this system uses a bare tube evaporator. In the heat transfer process from wastewater to refrigerant, thermal resistance is caused primarily by fouling deposits on the outside surface of tube. Fouling directly increases thermal resistance and decreases heat pump efficiency. Thus, it is desirable to eliminate fouling. In this study, we fabricated a fouling mitigation device using a bubbling fluidized bed with cleaning sponge balls in the wastewater bath. Experimental conditions were as follows: 20^{\circ}C cold-water temperature, 40^{\circ}C wastewater temperature, 100 L/h cold water flow rate, and 0.161m^2 heat exchanger surface area. Experimental results showed that the thermal resistance of fouling decreased by 56% with the fluidized bed alone and by 86% with both the fluidized bed and cleaning sponge balls.

This study presents a development of the cleaning system in a nuclear power plant condenser. The tube cleaning system is very important equipment in a power plant condenser. Specially, removal of the fouling is a key process in the condenser tube. The objective of this study is development of a ball collector system for cleaning a condenser by using a sponge ball. This study uses CFD in order to optimize design of the ball strainer screen. Through the CFD, the implication of the ball strainer screen for static pressure distribution is examined. Results of research, this study have developed a 1/5 scale model for application to the power plant and developed a performance test equipment.

We researched characteristics of heat recovery rate and fouling according to structures and materials in heat exchangers like water preheater and air preheater. Economizer and air preheater have used in thermal electric power plant. we made small incinerator and heat exchangers to carry out simulated experiment. We observed fouling formation and change of heat recovery rate, combusting powdered coal for 24 hr. In economizer, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by tube line type > pipe type > auto washing type according to structures. As heat recovery rate, fin tube showed highest recovery rate, followed by auto washing type > pipe type > tube line type. In air preheater, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by fin plate type > pipe type > pipe type coated by teflon > pipe type coated by ceramic according to structures. And then, heat recovery rate showed the same oder.

The objectives of this study are to measure the ball recovery rate of cleaning apparatus for plate heat exchanger. Ceramic ball is used for plate heat exchanger cleaning. The main components of cleaning apparatus are comprised of ball collector, ball trap, ejector, pump and plate heat exchanger. The ball recovery rate are obtained with change in recovery time and velocity of water. The results show that the ball recovery rate is slightly increased with increase in the recovery time and the velocity of water over 0.4 m/s in the straight flow. In the case of reverse flow, the ball recovery rate more increased than straight flow. The maximum ball recovery rate of the straight flow and reverse flow reach 83.97% and 86.61%, respectively, when the velocity and cleaning time are 0.5 m/s and 15min.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effecs of fouling mitigation for ceramic ball in cooling water system experimentally. The devices filled with ceramic balls were connected to the bypass line of the heat exchanging system. Cooling water in the heat exchanging system was artificial water. To visualize the formation of fouling on the heat transfer surface a number of images were obtained using a CCD camera with real-time microscopy. Fouling resistances and overall heat transfer coefficients were measured in order to analyze fouling mitigation effects. We found that the ceramic ball devices for artificial water reduced the formation of fouling compared to the no-mitigation devices.

In ‘classical’ modelling approach for crystallisation fouling the deposition rate is taken as a function of concentration driving force multiplied by an Arrhenius type temperature dependent function. Although nucleation sites are known to have a significant impact on crystallisation; this effect is not considered in the ‘classical’ modelling. This particular approach to define the deposition rate is elaborated and discussed in the current study. The effect of nucleation sites on calcium sulphate crystallisation fouling has been investigated in a plate heat exchanger where the quantity of the nucleation sites is affected by the presence of crystalline particles in process solution and an increase in the amount of deposits forming on heat transfer surfaces.
