Abstract

Uroleucon leontodontis (Hille Ris lambeRs, 1939) – an aphid species new to Poland with the description of its hitherto unknown alate morph (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Łukasz Depa 1 & ewa Mróz abstRact. The paper presents the first description of alate morph of Uroleucon leontodontis (Hille Ris lambeRs, 1939) – an aphid species new to Poland. The morphological features of the described alate females are provided and their resemblance to the closely related representatives of this genus is discussed.

Interest in trace metals and the environmental effects of their deposition significantly increased recently. Ecological communities formed on soils with a high concentration of heavy metals are characterised by a particular composition of plants and invertebrates in response to unfavourable physical and chemical conditions and under a strong selective pressure. Calaminarian grasslands as well as other dry grasslands are fragile habitats, very rare in Central Europe; such areas are often protected within nature reserves. This paper is the first comprehensive study of aphids (Insecta: Hemiptera: Aphidomorpha) of the metalliferous areas in Central Europe. It helped to describe the species diversity of aphid communities related to the plants of heavy metal grasslands, define the level of relationships between aphids and plants of heavy metal habitats and determine diagnostic aphid species for assemblages forming in such post-industrial landscapes. On the basis of ecological groups determined for aphids, also the number and percent of the species which form them and their ratios structure aphid communities and their condition was defined. An elevated heavy metal content in the soil does not limit the species richness of such an aphid community in comparison with those of other dry grasslands. However, these aphid communities possess specific features resulting from the mixture of species arriving from dry calcareous and sandy grasslands. The concept of ecological functional groups for analysis of aphid communities is introduced. Such an approach is useful for describing aphid communities in time and the directions of their changes, thus helping to monitor successive changes and the habitat state.

The taxonomic problems within the aphid genus Uroleucon Mordvilko, 1914 and its subgenera are briefly discussed. The analysis of the host plant relationships of particular taxa is indicated as supposed tool to reveal taxonomy and relationships of the taxa placed in Uroleucon and its subgenera. Attention is given to the need for further morphological analyses in search of monophyletic units within the genus as well as construction of the new identification tools and keys.

The monograph is a summary of current knowledge on the distribution of aphid species (Aphidinea) in Poland. The paper presents a systematic position of aphids within insects, their subdivisions into lower rank taxa and general characteristics of the families recorded in Poland. Based on the data collected up-to-date, a list of aphid taxa is given. It now comprises 739 species-leval taxa (709 species and 127 subspecies) of 11 families and 172 genera. According to the data published in the aphidological literature concerning Poland since 1968 to 2008 and the studies on specimen collections, the Authors verified and presented distributional data on aphid species in particular geographic regions of Poland. The qualitative degree of faunistic knowledge of particular regions is presented in Figures 1 and 2. The reasons to exclude some taxa previously given from Poland are presented.

1. The genus Atheroides Haliday Of this genus 3 Western European species are known : A. serrulatus Hal. (syn. festucae Mordv.?), A. hirtellus Hal. (syn. A. junci Laing) and A. brevicornis Laing. a) A. serrulatus Hal. is quite common. It lives on Poa annua often, but prefers species of grass with narrow, folded leaves, such as Festuca ovina, F. rubra, Nardus etc. b) A. hirtellus Hal. is not rare on Aira caespitosa. It seems to live on that plant only. c) A. brevicornis Laing is extremely common along the muddy seashores of the Netherlands. It prefers Festuca thalassica and F. distans, the two typical species of grass growing there 2). The alatae have not yet been described and therefore I add a short description. The apterae have been described excellently by Laing, but I redescribe them for comparison. Atheroides brevicornis Laing Apterous viviparous female. Morphological characters. Body very elongated oval, nearly linear. Tergum strongly sclerotic, usually uniformly dark, very coarsely corrugated, covered with clubshaped or inverse-bottleshaped hairs with blunt, sometimes emarginate apex; the bases of the hairs look like perforations of the dark sclerite. Head fused with prothorax, but suture very distinct; mesothorax, metathorax and first abdominal tergite free; abdominal tergite II— VII fused, second sometimes partly free ; eighth tergite semicircular, free. Head semicircular; front convex, with one, often normal, spiny hair standing over the base of each antenna; a pair of hairs more towards the middle,
