Abstract

This paper focuses on a critical component of the situational awareness (SA), the control of autonomous vertical flight for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). With the SA strategy, we proposed a two stage flight control procedure using two autonomous control subsystems to address the dynamics variation and performance requirement difference in initial and final stages of flight trajectory for a nontrivial nonlinear eight-rotor helicopter model. This control strategy for chosen helicopter model has been verified by simulation of hovering maneuvers using software package Simulink and demonstrated good performance for fast stabilization of engines in hovering, consequently, fast SA with economy in energy of batteries can be asserted during search-and-rescue operations.

Rotor flying manipulator (RFM) is a system composed of a rotorcraft and a manipulator. RFM possesses great potential applications and thus has got much concern of the researchers all over the world. However, controller design of the RFM is challenging because of the dynamical coupling between the rotorcraft and the manipulator perplexes the whole system model structure, so the flight performance of the system is more sensitive to some uncertainty factors. Generally, the rotorcraft system of the RFM can be a main-tail-rotor helicopter or multi-rotor aircrafts, which are of completely different flight characteristics. Thus, it is valuable to conduct quantitative coupling analysis of the RFM with different flight platforms. This paper is aimed at this problem. We first construct the dynamics model of the RFM system with respect to different flight platforms, respectively. Then, coupling force and moment are computed quantitatively, and the comparative analysis on the influence of the motion state on them is conducted. Finally, some conclusions are given to show different performances of different kinds of RFM systems.

In this paper the problem of the speed estimation of an unmanned aerial vehicle is addressed, when acceleration, the angles and the angular speeds are available for measurement. We focus our analysis on a prototype drone - a 4 rotors helicopter robot- which is not equipped with GPS related devices and relies on the inertial measurement unit (IMU) only. A global exponential solution to this open problem is provided in the framework of adaptive observation theory when exact measurements are available. A modified estimator is presented to enhance robustness in velocity estimation in the realistic case of noisy acceleration measurements.

This paper presents a visual feedback control of a small UAV using image-based visual servoing with stereo vision. In order to control the orientation and the position of flying robot with respect to an object or target well defined, we propose to use a navigation system based on binocular vision system combined with inertial sensors. This combination of sensors, allows us to get a complete characterization of the state of aerial vehicle. It means, using the stereo vision system we are able to estimate the UAV 3D position, while from the inertial sensors we can obtain the orientation of rotorcraft. Real time experiences are developed to validate the performance of navigation system proposed.

The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and the more recent war in the Gaza Strip have emphasized the need for novel platforms which provide for greater situational awareness in the urban terrain. Without intelligent systems, which can accurately provide real-time information, collateral damage to property will result, together with unnecessary civilian deaths. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that within the next decade 75% of the world's population will be living in urban areas. This paper outlines the current state of unmanned aerial vehicles throughout the world and presents a novel design of a multiple rotary wing platform which has great potential for both military and civilian application areas.

This paper presents a theoretical model of situation awareness based on its role in dynamic human decision making in a variety of domains. Situation awareness is presented as a predominant concern in system operation, based on a descriptive view of decision making. The relationship between situation awareness and numerous individual and environmental factors is explored. Among these factors, attention and working memory are presented as critical factors limiting operators from acquiring and interpreting information from the environment to form situation awareness, and mental models and goal-directed behavior are hypothesized as important mechanisms for overcoming these limits. The impact of design features, workload, stress, system complexity, and automation on operator situation awareness is addressed, and a taxonomy of errors in situation awareness is introduced, based on the model presented. The model is used to generate design implications for enhancing operator situation awareness and future directions for situation awareness research.

Decentralized command and control settings like those found in the military are rife with complexity and change. These settings typically involve dozens, if not hundreds to thousands, of heterogeneous players coordinating in a distributed fashion in a dynamically networked battlefield laden with sensor data, intelligence reports, communications, and plans emanating from many different perspectives. Consider the concept of team situation awareness in this setting. What does it mean for a team to be aware of a situation or, more importantly, of a critical change in a situation? Is it sufficient or necessary for all individuals on the team to be independently aware? Or is there some more holistic awareness that emerges as team members interact? We re-examine the concept of team situation awareness in decentralized systems beyond an individual-oriented knowledge-based construct by considering it as a team interaction-based phenomenon. A theoretical framework for a process-based measure called 'coordinated awareness of situations by teams' is outlined.

Using the symmetry properties is shown to naturally lead to inverse problems of controlled system dynamics and new effective procedures of algorithm synthesis of the motion control. Control algorithms of a nontraditional structure are synthesized on the basis of combination of the conceptions of dynamic inverse problems with systems functional-optimization. It is shown that Lyapunov function assignment in the form of kinetic or total energy leads to the systems which have the asymptotic stability with respect to the equilibrium state or undisturbed motion trajectories. These questions are considered with applications to systems with the models in the form of Lagrange, Euler and Newton equations.
