A New Perspective of Decision-Making under Uncertainty Decision Neuroscience

Decision neuroscience is a fast-going emerging interdiscipline in recent years. Research on uncertain decision-making had a long history while decision neuroscience has just started. The new inter - discipline interpreted decision from a new perspective and highlighted the importance of emotion and social interaction. It aims to explore the neural basis of judgment and decision-making, market conduct and economic behavior, and construct decision model based on neural and psychological mechanism.

Looking hot or feeling hot: What determines the product experience of warmth?

Warmth is an important characteristic for clothes, home interior and some leisure related products. We used an experimental approach to determine the relative importance of material and colour for the product experience of warmth. We designed products (scarves and breakfast trays) using warm and cold stimuli (colours and materials) in four different combinations and asked respondents to evaluate ... [Show full abstract] the warmth and pleasantness of each product. The results demonstrated that both colour and material contribute equally to the judgments of warmth in both products. However, the pleasantness of a product could not be predicted on the basis of the pleasantness attributed to its colour and material. A follow-up interview study distinguished between the literal and figurative meanings of warmth. The literal meaning is related to physical warmth and comfort. The figurative meaning is associated with social interaction, intimacy and friendly atmosphere. The figurative meaning was mentioned more often in association with products than the literal meaning.

[Show full abstract] to human behaviors exhibiting deviations from the simple maximization of external reward. Here we study the dynamics of betting behavior in a simple game, where the probability of reward and the magnitude of reward are designed to give a "zero" expected net reward ("flat reward condition"). No matter how the subject behaves, there is on average no change in one's resources, and therefore every possible sequence of action has the same value. Even in such a situation, the subjects are found to behave not in a random manner, but in ways showing characteristic tendencies, reflecting the dynamics of brain's reward system. Our results suggest that brain's reward system is characterized by a rich and complex dynamics only loosely coupled with external reward structure.

How Long Did You Look At Me? The Influence of Gaze Direction on Perceived Duration and Temporal Sens...

Faces that exhibit emotionally negative expressions in mutual gaze have been shown to induce a dilation of perceived duration. The influence of gaze by itself on duration judgments, however, has rarely been investigated. [Show full abstract] three experiments, we investigated whether the direction of observed gaze affects perceived duration and temporal sensitivity. In Experiment 1, subjects did indeed estimate the duration of direct gaze more accurately as compared to the duration of averted gaze. In Experiments 2 and 3, subjects had to categorize direct and averted gaze stimuli as being short or long in duration (temporal bisection). Experiment 2 found temporal sensitivity (but not mean duration judgments) to be improved in cases of mutual gaze. In Experiment 3, the effect of mutual gaze on prolonged subjective duration did replicate, however, it was rather small. Moreover, temporal precision was not improved in the case of naturalistic stimuli. In sum, effects of mutual gaze on duration judgments are rather weak, and cannot be attributed to arousal, as such ratings did not differ between direct and averted gaze stimuli.

Person perception from changing emotional expressions: primacy, recency, or averaging effect?

Dynamic changes in emotional expressions are a valuable source of information in social interactions. [Show full abstract] inferences about others’ personality traits from changing emotional expressions. Expressions changed from one emotion (“start emotion”) to another emotion (“end emotion”), allowing us to disentangle potential primacy, recency, and averaging effects. Drawing on three influential models of person perception, we examined perceptions of dominance and affiliation (Experiment 1a), competence and warmth (Experiment 1b), and dominance and trustworthiness (Experiment 2). A strong recency effect was consistently found across all trait judgments, that is, the end emotion of dynamic expressions had a strong impact on trait ratings. Evidence for a primacy effect was also observed (i.e. the information of start emotions was integrated), but less pronounced, and only for trait ratings relating to affiliation, warmth, and trustworthiness. Taken together, these findings suggest that, when making trait judgements about others, observers weigh the most recently displayed emotion in dynamic expressions more heavily than the preceding emotion.
