Characterizing the hyper-parameter space of LSTM language models for mixed context applications

Applying state of the art deep learning models to novel real world datasets gives a practical evaluation of the generalizability of these models. In addition to the failure of existing lines and generators, we explicitly model the failure of candidate lines. The proposed model comprises a master problem that makes the transmission construction decision, and a series of subproblems that can detect not only the worst contingency, but also the potential contingencies. Computational studies on the IEEE RTS 24-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the deterministic method and ARO method in the literature, the proposed method has higher computational efficiency.

Exploiting the Natural Redundancy of Chaotic Signals in Communication Systems

Chaotic signals can be used as carriers of information in communication systems. In this work we describe a simple encoding method that allows one to map any desired bit sequence into a chaotic waveform. A Validation of a Bender-Gestalt Scoring System

A validating study was carried out on the Pascal-Suttell scoring system of the Bender-Gestalt test. The records of 96 psychiatric patients were scored, and it was found that this technique differentiated psychotic from nonpsychotic records by meeting statistical criteria and, in a limited way, practical criteria. Their authors know how to build up suspense, i.e., they make readers want to know what comes. An uncountable number of pages in books and magazines are filled with advice on writing reportages or suspense novels. While many of the tips ... [Show full abstract] are specific to the respective genres, some carry over to economic page turners in an instructive way. After introducing some of these writing tools, I discuss whether these and other aspects of good writing lead to a biased presentation of economic theory and practice. I conclude that whatever the problems with certain economic page turners may be, they are not due to the need to write in an accessible, appealing way.

We developed the computer-aided tool Caitra that makes suggestions for sentence completion, shows word and phrase translation options, and allows postediting of machine translation output. We carried out a study of the translation process that involved non-professional translators ... [Show full abstract] that were native in either French or English and recorded their interaction with the tool. Users translated 192 sentences from French news stories into English. Most translators were faster and better when assisted by our tool. A detailed examination of the logs also provides insight into the human translation process, such as time spent on different activities and length of pauses.
