Managing Bad News in Social Media: A Case Study on Domino’s Pizza Crisis

Social media has become prominently popular. Tens of millions of users login to social media sites like Twitter to disseminate breaking news and share their opinions and thoughts. For businesses, social media is poten-tially useful for monitoring the public perception and the social reputation of companies and products. De-spite great potential, how bad news about a company influences the public sentiments in social media has not been studied in depth. The aim of this study is to assess people's sentiments in Twitter upon the spread of two types of information: corporate bad news and a CEO's apology. We attempted to understand how sentiments on corporate bad news propagate in Twitter and whether any social network feature facilitates its spread. We in-vestigated the Domino's Pizza crisis in 2009, where bad news spread rapidly through social media followed by an official apology from the company. Our work shows that bad news spreads faster than other types of infor-mation, such as an apology, and sparks a great degree of negative sentiments in the network. However, when users converse about bad news repeatedly, their negative sentiments are softened. We discuss various reactions of users towards the bad news in social media such as negative purchase intent.

This study is the first to investigate how a local government’s humorously framed response strategy on social media to a low-severity crisis influences people’s trust in the local government and their crisis-related behavioral intentions, specifically when considering the government’s responsibility for the crisis. Based on the situational crisis communication theory, we examined the mediating role of experienced positive or negative affect on people’s responses to a local government’s crisis communication strategy. Further, we exploratorily examined the predictive power and moderating role of demographics, sense of humor, disposition to trust, and the respective crisis scenarios. A total of 517 people participated in an online experiment in which they were confronted with three randomly presented fictive crisis scenarios where the local government’s crisis responsibility (high versus low) and the framing of their crisis response strategy (in form of humorous versus rational Twitter posts) were systematically varied between subjects. First, the results mostly corroborate earlier findings about the degree of crisis responsibility (that is, when a government’s crisis responsibility is high, people have less trust and behavioral intentions) and about the mediating role of experienced affect. Second, we found that humorously framed strategies negatively influence trust and positive affect (but not behavioral intentions). In contrast to earlier findings, the crisis responsibility × framing interaction was not significant. Altogether, the results advise against using humor in crisis communications on social media, even in low-severity crisis. Exploratory analyses indicate that further investigations should focus on specific crisis characteristics and potential moderators.

Facebook can be marked as an opportunity or as a curse for any business working these days. Social media concerns were a priority for many business managers. This empirical study aimed to examine the chain and independent restaurants’ Facebook usage to contribute in measuring their online image. The study developed an assessment tool to evaluate the contents of restaurants’ Facebook pages, Facebook groups, and Facebook accounts. A sample of sixty-seven restaurants (twenty-eight independent restaurants and thirty-nine chain restaurants) in ten college towns were assessed. Pizza restaurants were selected based on their growing & well-known performance. This study exposed some significant findings, e.g., the majority of independent restaurants did not have official Facebook page, but there was a very limited number of them that presented a superior presence. On the other hand, chain restauants used Facebook tools more efficient than the independent restaurant. The research outcomes revealed the gap in performance between independent and chain pizza restaurants at different aspects of the Facebook world. The findings highlighted various best practices, which can help Pizza restaurants to develop their Facebook presence and to gain more profits. Although the sample represented a sizeable homogenous group of Pizza restaurants, generalizability limited to empirical studies. Thus, the assessment tool of this study is recommended in future studies. When it comes to practical implications, restaurant Facebook developers should consider launching one official Facebook page and dynamically linking it to the restaurant’s website. This should contribute towards strengthening restaurant image and was considered as an unpaid promotional tool. The study was designed to contribute at the research area of Pizza restaurants’ Facebook usage, where there was a paucity of research and to guide restaurants to efficiently act towards their online image and presence.

Online debates typically possess a large number of argumentative comments. Most readers who would like to see which comments are winning arguments often only read a part of the debate. Many platforms that host such debates allow for the comments to be sorted, say from the earliest to latest. How can argumentation theory be used to evaluate the effectiveness of such policies of sorting comments, in terms of the actually winning arguments displayed to a reader who may not have read the whole debate? We devise a pipeline that captures an online debate tree as a bipolar argumentation framework (BAF), which is sorted depending on the policy, giving a sequence of induced sub-BAFs representing how and how much of the debate has been read. Each sub-BAF has its own set of winning arguments, which can be quantitatively compared to the set of winning arguments of the whole BAF. We apply this pipeline to evaluate policies on Kialo debates, where it is shown that reading comments from most to least liked, on average, displays more winners than reading comments earliest first. Therefore, in Kialo, reading comments from most to least liked is on average more effective than reading from the earliest to the most recent.

The use of internet and new media technologies provide new ways of communicating and online searching for health information. False health-related information as a result of the lack of reliable scientific sources is intentionally or unintentionally created and disseminated and can have negative effects on people's health. The purpose of this study is to identify strategies for counteracting online health misinformation from the perspective of health professionals using content analysis approach. From the analysis, strategies for dealing with the effects of misinformation include training of health staff at all levels, improving public awareness, and filtering or fact-checking. It is revealed that the most important way to cope with health misinformation in cyberspace is to enhance public awareness, which can reduce its detrimental impact to a great extent.

Yiyecek-içecek işletmeleri insanların yeme-içme ve sosyalleşme ihtiyaçlarının karşılandığı yerlerdir. Turizm ve yiyecek-içecek sektörü açısından oldukça önemli olan yiyecek-içecek işletmelerinin, kriz gibi zorlu süreçlere vereceği tepkiler ve önlemler bir o kadar önemlidir. Bu kapsamda çalışmanın da konusu olan yiyecek-içecek işletmelerinde kriz yönetimi, bir yiyecek-içecek işletmesinin kriz ve kriz yönetimi uygulamaları hakkındaki farkındalığın incelenmesini sağlamaktır. Bu araştırma, yiyecek-içecek işletmeleri içerisinde önemli bir temsil gücü olan restoran işletmeleri kapsamında uygulanmıştır. Anket uygulaması ile yürütülen araştırmada, İzmir ili içerisinde bulunan restoran işletmelerinin üst, orta ve alt kademe yöneticilerinin katılımı ile gerekli veriler toplanmıştır. Veriler, SPSS paket programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sürecinde 120 restoran işletmesine ve 205 cevaplayıcıya erişim sağlanılmıştır. Covid-19 salgını sebebiyle sınırlı sayıda işletme ve cevaplayıcıya ulaşılmıştır. Restoran işletmeleri yöneticilerinin kriz ile alakalı bilgileri, deneyimledikleri olaylar kriz yönetimi uygulamaları gibi birçok husus araştırma kapsamında cevaplayıcılara yönetilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler faktör analizi, T-testi ve Anova gibi istatistiksel test yöntemlerine tabi tutulmuştur. Bu araştırmanın amacı, İzmir ilinde bulunan, restoran işletmeleri ve bu işletmelerde yer alan farklı düzeydeki yöneticilerin kriz yönetimine yönelik mevcut bilgilerini ve tutumlarını belirlenmek. Farklı işletme özelliklerine sahip restoranların, gelecekteki karşılaşacakları potansiyel kriz durumları ve bu durumlar için yöneticilerin hangi kriz yönetimi uygulamasını benimsediğini tespit etmek.

Due to the extensive role of social networks in social media, it is easy for people to share the news, and it spreads faster than ever before. These platforms also have been exploited to share the rumor or fake information, which is a threat to society. One method to reduce the impact of fake information is making people aware of the correct information based on hard proof. In this work, first, we propose a propagation model called Competitive Independent Cascade Model with users’ Bias (CICMB) that considers the presence of strong user bias towards different opinions, believes, or political parties. We further propose a method, called \(k-TruthScore\), to identify an optimal set of truth campaigners from a given set of prospective truth campaigners to minimize the influence of rumor spreaders on the network. We compare \(k-TruthScore\) with state of the art methods, and we measure their performances as the percentage of the saved nodes (nodes that would have believed in the fake news in the absence of the truth campaigners). We present these results on a few real-world networks, and the results show that \(k-TruthScore\) method outperforms baseline methods.

Background: The internet and social media are considered as new tools to seek health information. Health misinformation is defined as a health-related claim of fact that is false due to the lack of scientific reliable evidence. These kinds of information are produced both intentionally or non-intentionally and can impose negative impact on the population health. This study was aimed to explore the strategies to deal with the health misinformation from the professionals' viewpoints. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted applying content analysis approach in 2018-2019. In this regard, 8 semi-structured interviews were conducted with health professionals of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences. Snowball sampling method was used to identify the eligible interviewees. Data was analyzed using the content analysis by Max QDA 10 software. Results: Analysis of interviews resulted in a main theme (strategies to deal with the negative consequences of online health misinformation) and 14 sub-themes of training health workers at all levels, creating responsible organizations for public education about the online web, improving the public education efforts, improving the general culture of society on the informed use of online technology, informing society about the impossibility of trusting all online information, disseminating the educational advertising, placing filters to prevent from the dissemination of inaccurate information, establishing the information verifying and validation mechanisms, improving the book reading culture, raising peoples’ awareness of and sensitivity to misinformation, having accurate accountability by specialists, learning how to think, improving the culture of critical thinking, making correct decisions based on the extensive information/taking into account several items in the case of decision making. Conclusion: According to the final analysis of the experts' viewpoint, the most important ways to deal with inaccurate information in the cyberspace were to increase the public awareness, reduce the reliability of all published data, and verify them repeatedly. These strategies can prevent from many traumatic consequences.

The prevalence of depression among the population estimated at 8-12%. The World Health Organization admits that the existing help system is not sufficiently successful in dealing with depression, and gives priority to online methods – accessible and anonymous. So it can be used by a large number of people and can help to overcome the problem of stigmatization of people with depression. In the article current trends in using online diagnostics tools (mobile applications and gadgets) are discussed and detection of groups with depression risk in social media digital footprints are analyzed. The prospect of research consists in studying the mechanisms and identifying specific components of programs related to the preventive effect, as well as the possibilities of using online methods to work with other mental disorders.

We are in the midst of a technological revolution whereby, for the first time, researchers can link daily word use to a broad array of real-world behaviors. This article reviews several computerized text analysis methods and describes how Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) was created and validated. LIWC is a transparent text analysis program that counts words in psychologically meaningful categories. Empirical results using LIWC demonstrate its ability to detect meaning in a wide variety of experimental settings, including to show attentional focus, emotionality, social relationships, thinking styles, and individual differences.

The value of social-media analytics is increasing as the number of comments in social media increase. Bluefin Labs is teasing out nuances in the way context affects the extent to which an ad generates buzz. To tap the other side of the conversation, the unscripted response of consumers with social-media accounts, companies like Radian6, General Sentiment, Sysomos, Converseon, and Trendrr track social-media sentiment and volume on a range of topics. Bluefin turns all this data into two main measurements. Response level reports the number of people commenting on any given ad or episode of a show, measured on a logarithmic 10-point scale. Response share measures what percentage of all social-media response to television programming at a given airtime focused on a particular show or ad. The new tools could also complement analytics like those provided by Simulmedia, a New York City company that licenses anonymized viewing data from 18 million set-top boxes.

Crisis communication has begun to systematically examine how people perceive the crisis response strategies using experimental designs. This is an important step in the evolution of crisis communication research. One problem with this research has been the over promotion of apology as “the” response. Too often the value of an apology is established by comparing how people react to an apology and to other less victim-centered/accommodative responses. This “unfair” comparison results in apology appearing to be “the” best alternative. This study compares apology to more equivalent crisis response strategies to more fairly determine if apology is “the” best strategy. The results show that people react similarly to any victim-centered/accommodative strategy meaning apology is not “the” best strategy. The implications of the results for crisis managers are discussed.
