Abstract

Two new species of Pachyphyllum (Orchidaceae), P. foreroi and P. idroboi, are described and illustrated based on Colombian material. Information about their habitat is provided and their distribution map is presented. Comparisons of the floral characteristics between the new entities and closely allied species are illustrated.

The Neotropical subtribe Pachyphyllinae comprises orchids distributed mainly along the Andes and characterized by the monopodial type of growth. The systematic position of this taxon within Orchidaceae and its generic composition was intensively discussed, but so far no comprehensive morphological study on the group was conducted. In this paper the morphological descriptions of all genera included in Pachyphyllinae are provided and the key to their identification is presented. In addition, the taxonomic position of Raycadenco is discussed. The research revealed the existence of two distinctive species which were classified until now within Pachyphyllum or Fernandezia. Since neither the flower morphology of those two species nor the gynostemium structure fulfils the concept of any known orchid taxon, the new genus is described here under the name Valdiviesoa. The two representatives of the new taxon are illustrated and the photographs of the plants are provided. The information about their distribution and ecology are provided. The morphological characters of all Pachyphyllinae representatives are compared.

The nomenclature of tribes and subtribes in the Orchidaceae is reviewed, and brought into line with the rules of botanical nomenclature. Tribal definition is discussed, and a different delineation of the Neottieae and Epidendreae is proposed. The Apostasieae are considered to be primitive orchids. The Vandeae are not considered to be clearly separable from the Epidendreae. A "phylogenetic" arrangement of recognized subtribes is proposed, and keys are given. A broader interpretation is given, especially of the subtribes Chloraeinae, Spiranthinae, Cyrtopodiinae, Epidendrinae, Maxillariinae and Oncidiinae. About 40 subtribes are recognized (as compared to 80 in Schlechter's system). The need for further revision is recognized. Evolutionary patterns are discussed for several features of the orchid plant, and the phylogeny of the family briefly considered. Robert L. Dressler, Missouri Botanical Garden, 2315 Tower Grove Ave., St. Louis 10, Missouri; Calaway H. Dodson, Instituto Botanico, Universidad de Guayaquil, Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Phylogenetic relationships within the orchid subtribe Oncidiinae sensu Chase were inferred using maximum likelihood analyses of single and multilocus DNA sequence data sets. Analyses included both nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer DNA and plastid regions (matK exon, trnH-psbA intergenic spacer and two portions of ycf1 exon) for 736 individuals representing approximately 590 species plus seven outgroup taxa. Based on the well resolved and highly supported results, we recognize 61 genera in Oncidiinae. Mimicry of oil-secreting Malpighiaceae and other floral syndromes evolved in parallel across the subtribe, and many clades exhibit extensive variation in pollination-related traits. Because previous classifications heavily emphasized these floral features, many genera recognized were not monophyletic. Our classification based on monophyly will facilitate focused monographs and clarifies the evolution of morphological and biochemical traits of interest within this highly diverse subtribe. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 168, 117–146.

This is the fourth and the last part of the series on the gynostemium structure of the order Orchidales. The previous parts were Szlachetko and Rutkowski (2000), Szlachetko and Margofiska (2002) and Szlachetko (2003). In this part we present the results of our investigations on the reproductive structures of the following tribes of the subfamily Vandoideae: Maxillarieae, Cryptarrheneae, Zygopetaleae, Dichaeeae, Telipogoneae, Ornithocephaleae, and Oncidieae.

The 41 accepted species of the neotropical orchid genus Pachyphyllum Kunth are enumerated. Types are cited for all names including 10 new lectotypifications. The genus is divided into 3 sections, one based on the genus Orchndotypus Kraenzl. and one wholly new, P. sect. Capitulum E A. Christ. Three names are considered synonyms within Pachyphyllum and eight names are excluded from the genus.

To bring species nomenclature for Oncidiinae in line with a comprehensive phylogentic study based on multiple DNA sequences and patterns of morphological variation, we present additional name transfers: (i) Ada, Brachtia, and Mesospinidium into Brassia and (ii) Pachyphyllum and Raycadenco into Fernandezia. These changes in circumscription are necessitated by the lack of monophyly of Ada and Fernanadezia/ Pachyphyllum as demonstrated in phylogentic studies of DNA sequence data, plus these two sets of enlarged genera each share some morphological characters that are putative synapomorphies. Raycadenco could be maintained, but it exhibits the synapomorphies of Fernandezia/Pachyphyllum and differs only in its pollination syndrome, so in the interests of simplicity it seems better to include it in Fernandezia.
