Abstract

Heterogeneous network (HetNet) which can provide the remarkable cell-splitting gain has already received adequate attention in the LTE-A system. Since the standardization of HetNet in HSPA+ is currently in progress, it is necessary to focus on the application of HetNet in the HSPA+ system. Cross- tier interference coordination is one of the crucial issues to be discussed in this area. Considering the HetNet deployment in the multi-flow HSDPA (MF- HSDPA), the main contribution of this paper is to propose a novel cross-tier interference coordination scheme in the MF-HSDPA HetNet. Our method combines the cross-tier multi-flow transmission with the adaptive time domain muting and cross-tier scheduling to deal with the interference problem. System-level simulation results will show the advantages of our proposed scheme.

The exponential increase in data traffic demand has focused attention on two layer network deployment strategies where low-power pico base-stations are placed within a macro cell coverage area targeting specific capacity demands. Two aspects of such a network are different from a macro-only deployment and are studied in this paper — (i) the choice of antenna geometry and polarization for a non-sectorized pico base-station (ii) the necessity for a macro layer to be silenced to protect users served by a pico layer and receiving severe interference from the macro layer. Our results show that orthogonally polarized arrays are markedly better than co-polarized arrays for pico cells. Also, linear arrays (whether cross- or co-polarized) are better matched to the LTE codebook than circular arrays. To manage interference, silencing a macro for an optimized fraction of time-frequency resources is necessary only when a significant fraction of users are off-loaded from a macro layer to a pico layer in an outdoor pico deployment.

In heterogeneous cellular networks (HCN) which consists of macrocells and numerous picocells, efficient interference management schemes between macrocells and picocells are so crucial to the overall system performance. We propose a dynamic cooperative silencing control (DCS) scheme for intercell interference control (ICIC). It is a low-complex, low-feedback and distributed algorithm using only strongly interfered neighboring users' information. The system simulation shows that the system performance and in particular the cell-edge throughput is significantly increased with the proposed silencing scheme. It offers 420% and 190% higher average spectral efficiency and edge-user spectral efficiency in compared to macrocell only case, respectively.

Cooperated multi-point technique in HSPA+ system has not been paid attention until the Single Frequency Dual Cell (SF-DC) mode, where one user equipment (UE) may be served by dual NodeBs simultaneously in the single carrier frequency network, is proposed recently. In the previous research, the system-level performance with SF-DC operation had not been studied comprehensively. The main contribution of this paper is to exploit SF-DC transmit mode in the perspective of the system level and evaluate the system-level performance of SF-DC in HSPA+ system with different simulation scenes. The impact of SF-DC on legacy UEs and the load balancing capability of SF-DC in asymmetric loading case are investigated properly in different channel conditions. System-level simulation results show that SF-DC transmit mode performs better compared with single point transmission and the influence of SF-DC mode on legacy UEs is negligible. It also reflects that SF-DC has the ability to balance load in asymmetric loading case.

Interference management for co-channel deployment of macro-cells and closed subscriber group (CSG) home-cells (HeNBs) are studied. We especially address the downlink macro-layer coverage-hole problem, where HeNBs may create too high interference to nearby macro-users, unless active interference management is applied. Interference management techniques based on HeNB power setting and partial Time Domain (TDM) muting of HeNBs are studied. Cases with TDM muting require optimization of the macro-cell packet scheduler, including taking into account that the interference level varies significantly at the users as function of the enforced muting pattern for the HeNBs. During subframes where HeNBs are muted, some interference is still generated due to the fact that signals like common reference signals are still to be transmitted. It is therefore studied how much the HeNB interference from muted subframes shall be reduced for TDM muting to perform better than schemes with simple HeNB power reduction.

Pico cell has been brought to cellular networks as a new technology to deliver cost-effective coverage and capacity to hard-to-reach places, and also increase capacity by cell splitting in hotspots with very dense phone usage. However, according to existing strongest receiving signal association method, pico cells with the extremely low transmitting power are significantly limited in the presence of macro coverage. Thus, the new introduced pico frequency resource will not be fully exploited in this unbalanced user distributions among macro and pico cells. In this paper, by jointly considering the long term channel condition and load balance in this macro-pico coexisted heterogeneous network, we formulate the cell selection problem into a network-wide proportional fairness optimization. Both optimal solution (by dynamic programming) and cost efficient algorithm (greedy heuristics) are proposed. In 3GPP LTE-A heterogeneous network scenario, the system-level performance evaluation shows that, compared with the conventional strongest signal cell selection scheme, the proposed optimized fairness cell selection methods could achieve significant performance gains especially for the cell edge users.

In a cellular heterogeneous network (HetNet), pico cells are added to a macro-cell layout aiming for benefiting average system throughput from cell-splitting. Considering that the large coverage of macro cell can limit the cell-splitting gains, cell range expansion is employed to increase the fraction of UEs camped on pico cells. However, some pico user equipments (UEs) suffer from macro cells due to cell range extension. In this paper, we propose an interference management scheme for macro-pico HetNet deployment to cope with the severe interference conditions from using cell range extension. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can remarkably improve cell edge spectral efficiency as well as overall system capacity.

In this article we consider network coordination as a means to provide spectrally efficient communications in cellular downlink systems. When network coordination is employed, all base antennas act together as a single network antenna array, and each mobile may receive useful signals from nearby base stations. Furthermore, the antenna outputs are chosen in ways to minimize the out-of-cell interference, and hence to increase the downlink system capacity. When the out-of-cell interference is mitigated, the links can operate in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. This enables the cellular network to enjoy the great spectral efficiency improvement associated with using multiple antennas
