Mute swans in chalk river catchments: a conservation conflict?

To further promote the excellent research that is being conducted by our ‘next generation’ of freshwater biologists, we are giving column space to current PhD students. Kevin Wood completed a Biology degree at the University of Bristol and a BSc thesis on guppy foraging behaviour, under the guidance of Prof. Julian Partridge. He then moved to Queen Mary, University of London for the Freshwater and Coastal Sciences MSc, supported by a NERC Masters Training Grant, and produced a thesis on interactions between invasive crayfish and native fish, part-sponsored by the Environment Agency and supervised by Dr Jonathan Grey. Below, he outlines his PhD focus, supervised by Dr Matthew O’Hare and supported by NERC.

The Reliability of AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Shells from China

We tested the feasibility of dating freshwater and terrestrial molluscs from the semiarid and arid zone in China, since these types of shell material deposit only aragonite to form their shell structure, and shell integrity can be easily observed using X-ray diffraction. Reservoir ages were calculated for living shells of the same species as fossil shells by using their measured 14 C ages, which were recalculated using an average value of atmospheric 14 C activity for the years spanning their time of collection as the modern standard. The results indicate that freshwater and terrestrial shells are potentially useful as dating material, provided extreme care is taken in their collection and other datable material (in this case wood and pollen) is within the profile to act as a comparison.

Canada has one of the greatest freshwater reserves in the world. The province of Québec is not an exception to this generalization in that there are over 750000 lakes and a large number of rivers of all sizes within the provincial boundaries. A major portion of this resource is highly vulnerable and is exposed to many contamination and environmental problems such as eutrophication, contamination ... [Show full abstract] from various pollutants, acidification, global climate changes, etc. In the province of Québec, actions are presently oriented toward reducing pollution hazards at the source by way of legislation, incentives and grant programs (wastewater cleanup programs), while resorting to short term direct approaches only in cases of emergencies and extreme necessity. The present article summarizes information about the problems encountered in Québec, their incidence, and the range of solutions available to reduce the impacts. This reflection is conducted in a way that favors a concerted global approach, which could act as the basis for a true water management policy.

The otter feeds almost exclusively on aquatic and semiaquatic species, catching them in watercourses and waterbodies. Foraging and prey consumption studies in freshwater habitats are scarce. Iberian otters caught between 3 and 5 fish/hour of observation in Mediterranean rivers, except during periods of fish shortage, when dropped to 1 fish/hour or less. On 98.2% of occasions the consumption of ... [Show full abstract] prey took place in the water, upon river features such as rocks, islands or stones, or at less than 1.50 m from the water edge. Almost all fish of less than 100 g were eaten whole, but left parts of large fish; gravide fish females; claws, legs and heads of crayfish; and toad skins. A food-limited species like the otter is under pressure to optimise the use if its food resources. The prey or parts of prey are left as a last resort in order to avoid injury, intoxications, because the daily food needs have been met, because disturbance, or because of immature behaviour in the case of cubs. For this reason, densities of fish remains are very low, but crayfish and toad remains densities can be high. Density of remains of prey depends more on the characteristics of the prey than the abundance of otters and prey. Results obtained are of importance when evaluating the biomass of the prey in the studies of diet, because parts of prey which are not consumed systematically.

Towards a sustainable human use of freshwater crayfish (Crustacea, Decapoda, Astacidea)

Uses are here classified as direct (i.e. consumption and production) and indirect. The latter uses refer to the recreational, cultural, ethical, aesthetic, scientific and education values of crayfish. An additional indirect use regards the environmental key role this taxon plays. Several examples, mostly related to Europe, will be provided to illustrate the importance of crayfish to human societies, culture and history. The potential of assigning a non-use value to them will be finally discussed.
