Abstract

Introductory Physics in our universities is being evaluated in an effort to determine the causes of low levels of science literacy in our society as well as the dwindling numbers of students majoring in Physics. Our study was based on the administration of a pre and post test using Hestenes Force Concept Inventory. The results clearly evidenced the lack of effectiveness of the course in transmitting and constructing fundamental concepts. This is consistent with the present situation of Introductory Physics in the United States. Our systematic assessment of the Introductory Physics includes: course, faculty, and student profiles. In addition, the teaching methodology is probed and the students (majors and non-majors) aptitude and attitude towards Physics is assess using questionnaires and polls. This study is the first phase of a curricular reform aimed to increase the number of students majoring in science and engineering. We expect that this assessment will provide a working tool for Physics professors to implement innovative and more effective teaching methods.
