In this work we intend to analyze the process of recognition, building knowledge and adaptation of the Lusitanian colonizers in sixteenth-century Portuguese America. Thus, the aspects will privilege survival and maintenance, as well as the techniques developed by these in relation to acquisition and maintenance of food sources in the tropics. We will address, so questions concerning the difficulties of introducing animal species native to Europe by Portuguese colonizers. In this sense, analyze the adaptation processes of the animals in relation to the new weather and food in the colony and the search for foods that could be obtained in the same. We utilize the accounts given by travelers, chroniclers and explorers of the New World which contains descriptions of species of animals in the tropics. To understand the difficulties in adapting to the new environment, we use the literature review that develops from a bias biological / geographical, with the works of Jared Diamond, Alfred Crosby, Keith Thomas, Warren Dean, and others who can corroborate the understanding of the factors hampered the immediate introduction of species of European animals.
