Decision-making in Safety Management

Abstract

Safety management involves safety assessment on the basis of indicator measurement and appraisal. The case study presented in this paper shows that (i) indicator selection is incomplete, especially soft factors and proactive factors are missing, and that (ii) indicator appraisal is partly driven by subjective judgments on the basis of tacit knowledge and hence is vulnerable to cognitive biases. Consequences for a safety management information system are discussed.
