The present work is part of a process to create a Catalogue of the Freshwater Fishes of Colombia and consisted in the depuration and updating of the taxonomic and geographic components of the checklist of the freshwater fishes of Colombia. An exhaustive revision of the 1435 species recorded in 2008 was necessary to: 1. Add new species described since 2009 and species originally described from Colombia but inadvertently omitted in 2008; 2. Add new records of already described species; 3. Delete species whose presence in Colombia was not supported by voucher specimens in ichthyological collections; and 4. Revise the geographic distribution of the species listed in 2008. This process resulted in the following numbers: 1. Total number of freshwater fish species in Colombia: 1494; 2. Number of species recorded by hydrographic region - Amazon: 706, Orinoco: 663, Caribbean: 223, Magdalena-Cauca: 220, Pacific: 130; and 3. Number of endemic species: 374 (76% from the trans-Andean region). Updating the current checklist is a fundamental requirement to ensure its incorporation in the decision-making process with regard to the conservation of Colombian aquatic species and ecosystems, which are facing transformation processes as a result of activities such as mining, construction of hydroelectric plants, expansion of the agricultural frontier and subsequent deforestation, industrial and domestic pollution, development of waterways, introduction of exotic species, and climate change.
... The remaining 24 families only contributed from one to four species (1.2 to 1.25%). ...

Anablepsoides chapare, new species, is here described from a small stream in the Isiboro River drainage, tributary of Mamoré River, Amazon basin, central Bolivia. It is a member of the A. limoncochae species group and differs from all the other species of this assemblage in its unique colour pattern and morphological differences. Within this assemblage A. chapare seems to be more related to A. christinae and A. luitalimae, both occurring at the Rio Madeira basin, sharing with these species the same caudal-fin shape and a similar color pattern on sides of body, but clearly differing from these species by details of coloration and the number of rays in anal, dorsal and pelvic fins, and also by distinct counts of scales on longitudinal and circumpeduncolar series. Anablepsoides chapare is the only formally described species of the genus occurring in Bolivia apart from A. beniensis, which is also known from the Rio Madeira basin, but clearly differs from this latter species, belonging to a different species group. Rivulus corpulentus Thomerson & Taphorn is herein transferred to the genus Anablepsoides and considered as belonging to the A. limoncochae species group.
... Meristic counts were made using a dissecting microscope. Fin rays were counted under transmitted light and include all discernable elements (Thomerson and Taphorn, 1993;Romand, 1994). Terminology for prefrontal squamation and the associated pores of the cephalic lateral line system follows Hoedemann (1958Hoedemann ( , 1961 and Scheel (1968). ...

The history of the genus Pachypanchax Myers, 1933 in the literature is reviewed and the utility of the diagnostic characters proposed by various authors is evaluated. On the basis of five synapomorphies, four skeletal and one squamational, six of the seven presently known Malagasy aplocheilids are found to be unambiguously referable to the genus Pachypanchax. The seventh, Poecilia nuchimaculata Guichenot 1866, known only from the unique type specimen, displays several peculiar skeletal and squamational features. Pending the acquisition of additional material, it is tentatively assigned to the genus. Of the six species treated here, Pachypanchax omalonotus (Duméril, 1861) and P. sakaramyi (Holly, 1828) are redescribed from recently collected topotypical material; and the following four are described as new: P. varatraza., P. patriciae, P. sparksorum, and P. arnoulti. Data on life colors, distribution, natural history and conservation status on all six Malagasy Pachypanchax species are presented.
... Dahl (1960,1961) gave an early overview of the La Macarena icthyofauna and described several new taxa based on the first modern ichthyological exploration of the region which took place in the 1950s. Myers & Weitzman (1960) described Brycon whitei, andThomerson & Taphorn (1993) described Rivulus corpulentus from the same region. Useche et al. (1993) and Bernal Ramirez & Cala (1997) reported on aspects of the biology of Brycon siebenthalae and Mylossoma duriventre from a tributary of the Rio Guayabero. ...

Bryconamericus macarenae sp. n.
