A catalog of Iranian prostigmatic mites of superfamilies Raphignathoidea & Tetranychoidea (Acari)

This catalog comprises 56 genera and 266 species of mite names of superfamilies Raphignathoidea and Tetranychoidea recorded from Iran at the end of January, 2013. Data on the mite distributions and habitats based on the published information are included. Remarks about the incorrect reports and nomen nudum species are also presented.

Superfamily Phytoseioidea comprises four families of Phytoseiidae, Blattisociidae, Podocinidae and Otopheidomenidae. During a survey (2010-2011) on Phytoseioidea superfamily of Zanjan County (North-west of Iran), about 550 specimens were collected. Samples were taken from soil, rotten wood, fungi, litter, and dung. Twenty two species belonging to the two families (Phytoseiidae, Blattisociidae) were identified. Among them two species are the first records for mite fauna of Iran which are signed by two asterisks (**) and thirteen species are new records for the fauna of Zanjan County which are signed by one asterisk (*). Order Mesostigmata is one of the largest groups in subclass Acari and its members are important components of natural and agricultural ecosystems. During 2013, fauna of edaphic mesostigmatic mites were collected from soil and plant debris of Arasbaran forests in north of East Azerbaijan province, Iran. In this study, 40 species belonging to 32 genera and 18 families were collected and identified. Among the identified species, 20 species were new for East Azerbaijan province fauna. A key for identified taxa has been given. In this study, the family Veigaiidae had the highest relative frequency (19.01%) and the families Zerconidae and Laelapidae with 15.21% and 13.19 frequencies were situated in the next ranks, respectively. The list of identified species are as follows. Predatory mites in tropical Australia: Local species richness and complementarity

Although little supporting data is available, mites (Acari) are often considered to be one of the 'hyperdiverse' taxa in tropical ecosystems. To test this assumption, we sampled single guilds of predatory mites (Hydracarina and Mesostigmata) in three different habitats (fresh water, rotting fungi, and forest foliage) across a range of sites in monsoonal, wet-tropical, and subtropical Australia. ... [Show full abstract] Most species (61%) were collected at a single site; as a result, all seven collector's curves rose steeply with little indication of reaching asymptotes. Regional faunas ranged from 87-94 percent distinct and of the 247 species identified, 114 (46%) were previously unknown in Australia and appear to be new. Even within taxonomically well-studied groups, such as the Hydracarina and Phytoseiidae, we found many new species (32% and 60%, respectively). Our results suggest that the diversity of tropical mites is very high and comparable to that of many insect taxa. We propose a simple model to explain our results, i.e. that in the tropics, high levels of complementarity between sites amplify local mite species richness. We tested this model by additional sampling, comparing within-site to between-site complementarity, and contrasting temperate with tropical foliar Mesostigmata. As predicted by the model, collecting at new sites continued to accumulate new species, complementarity was significantly greater between-sites than within-sites (72 vs. 25%), and temperate collections were more homogeneous and less diverse than tropical collections.

A new species of Paragigagnathus Amitai & Grinberg (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) from Iran

Paragigagnathus sistaniensis Kreiter, Arjmandi-Nezhad and Saboori n. sp. belongs to the tribe Neoseiulini, subfamily Amblyseiinae, is described and illustrated, based on females and males. The new species was collected from foliage of tamarisk trees in Sistan region, Sistan and Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran.
