Lateral dispersion of low-energy protons precipitated in the auroral zones

Through the use of a Monte Carlo type calculation, the lateral dispersion of a fine proton beam of given energy and pitch angle in an atmosphere of given exospheric temperature is investigated. It is found that this lateral dispersion may be estimated by using a simple analytical expression.

A large increase inFthroughout the lesion bodywasfoundin3lesions only, andwasassociated withasurface zonethat wasthinoroflowx-ray density. Relatively smallFincreases inthelesion bodywere associated witheither athick, x-raydensesurface layer havingagreatly increased Flevel (>10,000 ppm)or, conversely, withasurface layer having arelatively small F increase. Since Fuptake canberegarded asa"marker" of pastremineralization events, thisstudyshowsthat remineralization cananddoesoccur inthebodyofnatural enamel caries lesions, especially whenthesurface layer is thinorlost. Self-consistent study of the proton shell effects near 146Gd

It is shown that a subshell effect associated with Z = 64 can be obtained with the self-consistent energy density mass formula. Such an effect is suggested by the experimental results about alpha-decay and spectroscopy, but is not found in Hartree-Fock calculations, neither with the Skyrme interaction, nor in the model of Pearson et al. The spatial distribution of protons and alpha particles and their spectral characteristics agree well with a model of radial diffusion and loss due to ionization. Proton currents with energies greater than 70 keV at low altitudes in the equatorial region

Protons with E//p greater than 70 keV are studied at low altitudes in the equatorial region. Measurements were made with a proportional counter installed aboard the satellite Kosmos-484. At 17-5**h MLT protons with E//p greater than 70 keV were recorded at L less than equivalent to 1. 25, while at 5-17**h MLT no proton currents were recorded within or outside the South Atlantic anomaly. Between the proton flow zones near the equator and at middle latitudes there exists a region where no protons with E//p greater than 70 keV are observed. Modeling the distributions of high-energy ions in the earth radiation belts

A solution is obtained to the steady-state Fokker-Planck equation describing the transport of H-1(+), He-4(+), and O-16(+) ions with pitch angles of 90 deg from the outer boundary (L = 6.6) of the radiation belts to the inner zone (L = 2). The data indicate a reaction zone with a considerably higher energy density and lower net baryon density than in previous experiments at lower energies.
