Spiny rats of the genus Clyomys Thomas, 1916, include 2 recognized species both described on the basis of a small number of specimens, C. laticeps (Thomas, 1909) comprised of the nominotypical form and subspecies C. laticeps whartoni Moojen, 1952, and C. bishopi Avila-Pires and Wutke, 1981. [Show full abstract] pooled geographic samples representative of the distributional range of Clyomys structured the samples morphometrically into 2 geographic groups, which do not correspond to the taxonomic units postulated in previous studies. These morphometric groups were checked against data on qualitative skull morphology and pelage coloration from 128 specimens in a search for patterns supporting the taxonomic recognition of the morphometric groups revealed. The morphometric and qualitative analyses do not corroborate the current taxonomic framework of the genus Clyomys, and indicate that C. bishopi is a junior synonym of C. laticeps.

Clyomys Thomas, 1916 is a genus of equimid rodent that occurrs from the Paraguayan Chaco to Cerrado of central Brazil, with isolated records in Minas Gerais and Bahia states. Until recently the genus included two species, C. laticeps (Thomas, 1909) and C. bishopi Avila-Pires & Wutke, 1981. A recent review found no taxonomic characters that supports the distinction between these species, but ... [Show full abstract] revealed a morphometric structure discordant with the karyotypes known for the species. In order to confront new character sets to those already available, 16 specimens of Clyomys laticeps were studied with respect to the phallic aparatus. The glanses were analyzed before and after cleared (diaphanized) and the bacula after the dissection of the glanses. The size and shape of the phalli were uniform among geographic samples analyzed, but the bacula were variable in the shape of the distal and proximal ends. Based on these results, we discuss the possible implications of the bacular variability for the taxonomy of the genus.

Clyomys laticeps (Rodentia: Echimyidae)

Clyomys laticeps (Thomas, 1909), the broad-headed spiny rat, is a medium-sized semifossorial rodent with spinous pelage, reduced tail, short limbs, and long powerful claws. These characteristics and its very conspicuous tympanic bullae make C. laticeps unique among echimyid rodents. It primarily inhabits the Cerrado domain of central and southwestern Brazil, where it occurs in open grasslands and ... [Show full abstract] savannas, and also in the Paraguayan Chaco. Presently, C. laticeps is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, although some populations inhabit localities under strong habitat change due to urbanization and conversion of Cerrado vegetation to pastures.
