Abstract

Our views on project success have changed over the years from definitions that were limited to the implementation phase of the project life cycle to definitions that reflect an appreciation of success over the entire project and product life cycle. This paper assesses our evolving understanding of project success over the past 40 years and discusses conditions for success, critical success factors and success frameworks. The paper concludes with a holistic view of project success and its implications for practice. This is an important topic because projects are an increasingly common way of work, and the lines between project and process work are harder to discern. Increasingly, more project managers work in companies using program and portfolio management as a means to organize project-related work. The success of individual projects, therefore, impacts the wider organization in several dimensions and makes the concept of project and project management success that much more relevant. The topic is also important because it has a bearing on the future directions of project management in the strategic context.

... This analysis showed that the established model can capture the relationship between CSFs and challenges and their impact on project success. Based on Jugdev and Muller [129], managing CSF allows effective mitigation for the impact of challenges, leading to a higher chance of reaching project success. One of Indonesia’s sustainability targets is achieving full energy transitions and net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. Thus, significant strides and massive investments are being made to revolutionise the development and delivery of infrastructure projects, particularly in the energy sector. The State Electricity Company is driving these advances, targeting a surge in renewable energy usage to 23% by 2025 and 31% by 2050. Despite these efforts, progress remains critically low, highlighting the urgent need for more effective strategies and execution. A comprehensive understanding of the critical success factors (CSFs) and barriers—and how they influence these projects—is essential to ensuring their successful delivery. This study aims to identify and model the influences of various CSFs and barriers to renewable energy projects’ success in Indonesia. Using a questionnaire survey with 182 respondents, this study explored the critical success factors, key challenges, and applicable strategies. The data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The analysis revealed four critical success factors, including stakeholders’ collaboration and project supervision, and 10 key challenges, including insufficient planning, poor stakeholder communication, and unrealistic cost and time estimation. The strategies involved a cross-functional framework for effective collaboration, early consultation for integrating collaboration and supervision, and frequent reporting for enhanced supervision. These strategies are crucial to addressing emerging challenges in renewable energy projects and achieving sustainable development goals in Indonesia.

The distribution of petroleum products are critical to the economic stability of Ondo State, Nigeria. However, challenges in risk management practices can hinder project success, affecting safety, operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and financial viability. This study aims to assess the effect of risk management practices on the success of petroleum products distribution. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving a sample size of 181 participants drawn from a population of 330 senior staffs working in oil and gas firms and regulatory bodies in Ondo State, the selection of the participants was based on purposive sampling and random sampling technique. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that Risk Identification and Risk Assessment have positive significant effects on success of success of petroleum products distribution, Risk Monitoring has negative insignificant effect on success of success of petroleum products distribution whereas Risk Mitigation has negative significant effect on success of success of petroleum products distribution. The study concludes that while risk identification and risk assessment positively affect the success of petroleum products distribution, challenges in risk monitoring and risk mitigation must be addressed to maximize their effectiveness. Hence, this study recommends that organizations should invest in advanced technological tools and real-time data analytics to enhance the quality and timeliness of risk monitoring; and direct efforts towards addressing inefficiencies in the implementation of risk mitigation measures such as periodic reviews of strategies, enhanced resource allocation, and training programs to improve the execution of mitigation plans.

】 This study investigated the role of project management skills in effective utilization of organizational resources. The main objectives were to assess the effect of communication skills, risk management skills, leadership skills, and time management skills on utilization of organizational resources. The used a quantitative approach by administering a survey to a sample population of 66 respondents based at ZAD real estate development organization. The study found that there is direct relationship between managers' leadership style and utilization of organizational resources, most of the respondents suggested that leadership can enhance employee motivation through effective communication, among other project management skills. The findings imply that organizations should prioritize the development of communication, risk management, and leadership skills among their employees. Training programs focused on these areas could enhance overall organizational performance and employee satisfaction.

Purpose – Clarifying and measuring the effectiveness of flexible construction principles on project efficiency in construction projects in central Jordan. Design/methodology/approach – This study is considered one of the quantitative studies that provide a numerical explanation to prove the effectiveness of lean construction principles in project efficiency in construction projects in central Jordan. The study sample was selected randomly from a homogeneous community of consultants and contractors who hold engineering membership from the Jordan Engineers Association. Results– The results indicated that the comprehensive application of the principles of flexible construction (value definition, value stream mapping, flow creation, pull instead of push, and Pursuit of Perfection) leads to improvements in the level of efficiency in construction projects in central Jordan. Originality/Value - This research highlights the research gap related to the application of flexible construction principles by the construction sector and reveals the concepts related to project efficiency. In addition, this research is considered one of the few studies that studied the extent to which the Jordanian construction sector applies flexible construction principles and its effectiveness in improving project efficiency.

The primary objective of this research study is to investigate the various causes of construction project delays in Dire Dawa Administration. In doing so, the researcher has employed dominantly quantitative research approach and the attributes are ranked in terms of their importance by using Relative Importance Index (RII). Moreover, both descriptive and explanatory (causal research) research designs via cross-sectional survey are utilized for this study. The data has been collected from both primary and secondary sources. Census method of inquiry is employed through distributing 102 a self-administered questionnaire to clients/government bureaus, contractors and consultants of large government owned construction projects. Relative Importance Index technique, one way ANOVA, ordinal logistic regression model and chi-square analysis are used for data analysis. The descriptive statistics result has revealed that delay in the manufacture of building materials (RII=0.81), delays in producing design (RII=0.8), low productivity level of labors (RII=0.8), insufficient work by the contractors (RII=0.78),equipment shortage (RII=0.78), material types and specification changes in the construction (RII=0.75), equipment breakdowns (RII=0.75), design engineer's inability to understand the requirements of the owner (RII=0.75), discrepancies in project designs RII=0.74) delay in the delivery of materials on time (RII=0.74)are the top ten perceived causes of large construction projects in Dire Dawa Administration. As a result, reconsideration should be due on project planning and designing of construction projects in order to find out the factors harming the possibility of timely completion of the projects in which stakeholders such as owners, consultants and contractors have clearly defined goals.

A recent study was conducted to help project managers gain a clearer understanding of those factors which are critical to the successful implementation of R&D projects. This study resulted in the development of both a 10-factor model of the project implementation process and an instrument, the Project Implementation Profile, which project managers can use to periodically monitor the current state of each of the ten factors throughout a project's life. The factors include: project mission; management support; project schedule/plans; client consultation; personnel; technical tasks; client acceptance; feedback/monitoring; communication; trouble-shooting.

Project management is the system of processes, practices, technologies, and skills that focuses on the development of a unique product. It is strategically important to the economic growth of industry throughout the world because it represents one of a few critical enabling strategies for strengthening a competitive marketplace posture. Industrial engineers identify ease of use and project tracking as the most critical project management tool features, and Microsoft Project and Primavera are the two project management tools of choice. Industrial engineers recognize the benefits of improving their project management skills through disciplined application of management and engineering principles, methods, and tools to avoid failure.

The field of project management has undergone very important developments during the last 10 years, if one considers the very large amount of activities that it has generated and continues to generate (papers in journals, dedicated journals, books, meetings, applications, etc.). Even if project management has reached some maturity—due to the construction of a common referential, a common body of knowledge called A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—its future is subject to questions and debate among its researchers. What is the evolution of the field? What is its structure? Is it integrating new topics that correspond to management by project? In order to answer such questions at least partially, we have studied project management literature by the method of associated words (scientometric analysis) and the software, “Leximappe.” All the papers that are relative to project management and included in the bibliographic ABI-INFORM database from 1987 to 1996 have been analyzed. In this paper, we present the main results of this study.

Strategies for attaining competitive advantages emphasize developing and configuring existing resource strengths into a valuable and unique resource base. But what if you do not yet have a legacy of resource strengths? Entrepreneurs in emerging organizations must first assemble resources, then combine them to build a resource platform that will yield distinctive capabilities. The case studies included in this article illustrate the challenges entrepreneurs confront in identifying, attracting, combining, and transforming personal resources into organizational resources. We offer two analytical tools for assessing initial resource needs and developing a resource strategy that can enhance possibilities for wealth creation. Our pathway approach provides guidance for entrepreneurs constructing a resource base.
