This study aims to understand successful EFL learners in the context of Korea, their past and present perspectives and behavior related to English learning. To achieve this aim, this study employed qualitative approach, a case study of 11 Korean learners of English who attained highly advanced English proficiency by studying English primarily in Korea. Two specific research questions were proposed:1) What do good language learners (GLLs) experience on the course of English learning from the time of starting English study until the matriculation at a university? 2) What do GLLs share with one another when it comes to English language learning experiences? In-depth interviews were conducted with the participants and their data were transcribed and theme-coded. The analysis revealed that GLLs exceeded English proficiency level required in the national College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) early in their middle school period, although their speaking ability was relatively lower than other skills. It was also found that their affective aspects such as growth mindset, autonomy, self-confidence, internalization of social values, and grit played important roles in their outstanding English achievement. Further implications for language learners in the Korean context were provided in terms of language pedagogy and assessment.
... Because the phenomenon of school turnaround across these four case study schools have yet to been fully explored or understood, one of the key strengths of the case-study approach involves using multiple sources of data collection in the form of interviews, focus groups and document review. There isn't a single approach or methodology that has a complete advantage over the others, for they are often complementary instead (Merriam, 1988). ...
... Overall, this multiple case study drew on 16 interviews, four focus groups, and over twenty relevant documents which included the schools' strategic plans and inspection reports as listed above. During a qualitative study, substantial amounts of raw data are collected and must be organized and managed appropriately and effectively to facilitate analysis (Merriam, 1988;Stake, 2013;Yin, 2018). Throughout this study, data that was collected during interviews, focus groups and documents were organized and catalogued in a manner that made it more accessible and easily retrieved. ...

The past decades have witnessed a remarkably consistent effort by educational policy makers and the Ministry of Education of Bahrain to reform schools by holding them more publicly accountable for enhancing student performance and overall school improvement. With the establishment of the Education & Training Quality Authority (BQA) in 2008, public schools went under intensive inspection reviews conducted by the BQA. Public schools are currently under their fourth cycle of school reviews (with each cycle averaging 4 years). Within the period of the school review cycles, were underperforming schools able to improve to good or better? If so, what are the best practices and common trends of these turnaround schools? This study aims to utilize a qualitative multiple case study approach to gain a better understanding of how the district, school leadership and staff managed to successfully turn schools around. In order to better understand the mechanisms behind school success it is vital to make comparisons between successful and ‘failing’ schools. As such, this study also includes case studies of ‘stuck’ schools which are public schools that are continuously judged as ‘inadequate’ (4) by the BQA inspection agency for three cycles of review from the period of 2009 to 2019. The study identifies the main external and internal factors that have either promoted or inhibited improvement in the case study schools such as leadership, building capacity and collaboration, many of which overlap with school turnaround and school effectiveness literature. This is aligned with concepts espoused in Fiedler’s Contingency Theory, that emphasize that what makes an organization or school effective is dependent on contextual (contingency factors) that can be both internal and external to the organization. The findings from this study contribute to a better understanding of school improvement and turnaround, more specifically within the context of a more centralized system within the Arab Region.
... The study followed a qualitative case study design which Merriam (1988) define as an intensive, holistic description and analysis of a bounded phenomenon such as a program, an institution, a person, a process, or a social unit. Case studies also give an interpretive account. ...
... For the purpose of this study the bounded phenomenon was a person namely a Life Orientation teacher as a new kind of a teacher to handle the new subject Life Orientation. In choosing a case study design, I wanted to approach the study from a naturalistic research paradigm whereby insight and understanding were sought from what the Life Orientation teacher was doing as Merriam (1988) outlined. ...

The study focused on the new subject introduced in South African schools' curriculum, namely Life Orientation (LO). The purpose of the study was to investigate Grade 12 learners' views with regard to characteristics of a new kind of a teacher to handle Life Orientation as a subject and the role played by this teacher, other than teaching the subject only. Also the LO teacher's views regarding her role and knowledge and expertise were taken into consideration. The sample size was 39 Grade 12 learners and 1 LO teacher from a township high school in Gauteng province. The school was purposely chosen since it had a good track record of Grade 12 results for the past fifteen years. Questions evolved around what the learning content entailed and the role of the LO teacher at school. Learners were given incomplete sentences to complete and the teacher got a separate one to complete also. All ethical considerations were observed. Findings revealed that learners saw LO preparing them for life. They enjoyed conversations in class which were around real issues in life. They also highlighted that, what was missing, was more of physical training which would make Life Orientation periods more enjoyable. Learners saw their LO teacher as a loyal and caring person. Results indicated that there was a need for support since most learners went through challenges.
Abstract This article describes a multiple case study that investigated the interaction of navigation, evaluation and integration competencies within a process leading to the comprehension of online informations during the realization of an information literacy task by 6 th grade readers. In combining direct interviews, think-aloud protocol, free interviews of comprehension verbalization and semi-directed retrospective interviews, this study allows the induction of an autoregulated mobilization of the competencies while learning from multimodal and non-linear informations consulted online. It also leads to the hypothesis of five online reader's profiles. ... Two specific objectives of the grant related directly to this study were to (a) complete a two-year PD (professional development) plan to prepare participating educators to serve MLs and their families effectively and equitably; and (b) increase the number and quality of participating educators to provide equitable and effective service to MLs and families (National Professional Development Program, 2017). This case study (Merriam, 1988), nested within a larger 5-year study on the development of equitable practices through PD, takes place in the Midwest and includes 24 inservice content teachers and 5 district coaches from 4 districts (one rural, one urban, and two suburban), whose ML populations ranged from 20% to 33% in grades PK-12. ...
... Analysis focused on teacher identity over time through words and actions, the impact of interaction on lesson design, and the role of ML demography in lesson design and implementation. To shed light on the three research questions, we employed a case study (Merriam, 1988) approach through three phases of analysis. In the first phase, we utilized Otter.ai to transcribe all GoReact Teaching-Coaching cycles and focus group interviews. ...

As the United States becomes increasing diverse, it is incumbent upon teachers and teacher educators to continually strive to develop more equitable and socially-just pedagogies and practices. Framed through the lens of translanguaging, this multiple case study examined the burgeoning development of equity-based practices and mindsets of eight in-service early childhood and elementary teachers in the Midwest over three teaching-coaching cycles. Analysis focused on materials (e.g., original and revised lesson plans, teaching videos, lesson materials, and peer dialogues and reflections on lesson preparation , activities, and assessments), collected over three coaching cycles, final reflection papers, and focus group interviews. Preparation, teaching, and reflection videos, as well as interviews, were transcribed and coded across three phases of analysis. Findings indicated that teacher transformations occurred as teachers interrogated moments of tension in lesson planning and implementation dialogically with their peers across the cycles and that virtual communal spaces served as communities of practice.

This case study reviews the implementation of a learning analytics (LA) system at a large southeastern university. The LA system uses cloud computing to automate data collection and distribution, providing faculty with insights into student performance and engagement. The system includes weekly alert emails and dashboards offering detailed insights into student learning. The study explores faculty perceptions of the LA system, focusing on its uses, benefits, weaknesses, and barriers to adoption. Data were collected through surveys and focus groups involving faculty who participated in a pilot initiative. Findings reveal that when provided LA, faculty will make data-driven changes to their teaching strategies and are likely to include changes to their feedback, communication, and interactions. Additionally, while LA helped faculty identify performance trends and support students, it also presented challenges such as a learning curve and Learning Management System (LMS) integration issues. Recommendations for improving LA adoption include ongoing training to optimize use of the analytics and facilitate data-informed decisions that support student success and course improvements, clear institutional policies regarding data privacy, and a focus on the long-term impact on student outcomes and teaching practices.

Introduction This study examines the strategic management of nation branding from a soft power perspective, focusing on Qatar’s use of sports mega-events to enhance its global image. In contrast to hard power, soft power, in the realm of national or public diplomacy, refers to using cooperation rather than coercion to influence the impressions and preferences of others. Our research highlights the efforts by the government of Qatar to leverage sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, to boost international visibility, enhance cultural exchange, and attract tourism and investments. Methods Using document analysis and semi-structured interviews, we investigate how global sports serve as a unique soft power vehicle for nation branding, building the attraction and appeal of a nation. Results Our findings deepen insights into how nations can strategically and sustainably use globally known and popular sports to cultivate soft power, heighten national pride, and project a positive identity on the world stage. Discussion We contribute to the literature on soft power by developing a systematic conceptual framework for understanding how mega-sports events can be strategically managed to support nation branding and public diplomacy.

As Canada is implementing a new national school food program with a long-term vision of every child having access to nutritious food in school, understanding student eating perspectives and food choices in universal programs is paramount. The purpose of this study was to understand how students in two low-income and culturally diverse elementary schools in Saskatoon, Canada, perceived and participated in a 2-year, universal school lunch pilot. This study was part of a larger case study of the Good Food for Learning program. Eleven focus groups with 65 students in grades 5–8 and participatory observation in the schools were conducted. Data analysis followed a reflexive thematic analysis approach Braun V, Clarke V. Reflecting on reflexive thematic analysis. Qual Res Sport, Exer Health 2019;11:589–97. doi:10.1080/2159676 × .2019.1628806, Braun V, Clarke V. Can I use TA? Should I use TA? Should I not use TA? Comparing reflexive thematic analysis and other pattern-based qualitative analytic approaches. Counselling Psychother Res 2020;21:37–47. doi:10.1002/capr.12360) using NVivo 12 Plus. Student perspectives centered around being well-fed at lunch. Students saw participation in the pilot as a matter of personal choice: student decision to participate was encouraged by the pilot’s flexible and free design; availability of well-liked food; and the perceived healthiness of the food. Offering culturally diverse and inclusive food was important to students. Mitigating future barriers to student participation in universal lunch programs will require attention to student choice, agency, and diversity, and offering diverse portion sizes, adequate meal lengths, and student-centered infrastructure. School lunch programs that are universal, health promoting, tasty, and free, and offer flexibility and choice to students, may be a socially desirable way to improve student nutrition and wellbeing.

Civil servants are expected to be professional and competent because they have to be able to work well and to tackle challenges in VUCA conditions. To improve their competitiveness, opportunities to continue to higher level of education are given. Those who take these opportunities should attend TOEFL Preparation classes held by the Language Training Center of the National Institute of Public Administration. In order to help them learn TOEFL, three non-digital language games were developed and applied in the classroom to help them learn. To obtain data whether these games could create meaningful learning this research was conducted. Data were gathered from online questionnaire whose questions were revolved around five attributes of meaningful learning and also from classroom observation. The results showed that all attributes of meaningful learning which were active, constructive, intentional, authentic, and cooperative were achieved. The games enabled them to actively and enthusiastically played the non-digital language games with their classmates. They also shared common knowledge that they could use to answer Structure and Written Expressions questions. They also mentioned that the games helped them construct their initial knowledge and the new knowledge they learnt in the classroom. This qualitative research explores the pivotal roles of parents in motivating their children to learn. The study aims to (1) unravel the strategies employed by parents to motivate their children in learning, (2) identify challenges faced by parents in providing compelling motivation, and (3) propose solutions to address these parental difficulties. Employing a qualitative research design, this study focused on investigating parents and students in an Indonesian Elementary School as the participants. Data collection involved observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal recurring difficulties parents and children face in the learning process. From the children's perspective, challenges include difficulty comprehending subject matter, lack of focus during learning sessions, reluctance to study, and excessive reliance on electronic gadgets. These challenges can be particularly daunting for parents, who also face their own obstacles. From the parental standpoint, obstacles include busy schedules, a lack of clarity regarding motivation, and familial issues. Understanding and empathizing with these challenges is crucial for devising effective solutions. This research contributes valuable insights into the dynamics of parent-child interactions related to education. Identifying challenges and proposing solutions is just the first step. It provides a foundation for future interventions that are urgently needed to enhance parental involvement in fostering children's learning motivation. The time to act is now.

Background Registered nurses are the largest single professional group working in the field of cancer care and support one of the most vulnerable patient cohorts in the healthcare system. Cancer nurses are known to experience high rates of burnout, but there are significant limitations to current research on the unique stressors experienced by this group of nurses, particularly since the emergence of COVID-19. Methods This study employs the Job Demands Resource Model (JD-R model) to better understand the experiences of Victorian cancer nurses’ work and describe factors which ameliorate burnout and work-related stress. A multiple case study research design was used in this study, with two groups of cancer nurses making up a total of 30 participants, allocated to separate cases bounded by geographical location. A two-phase study of Victorian cancer nurses in metropolitan and regional healthcare services was conducted from 2019 to 2021. Data included field notes and in-depth interviews. Data analysis used a process of elaborative coding, with a pre-conceived coding framework based on the JD-R model. A combination of thematic analysis and storyline analysis was employed to analyse the data. Results A cross-case analysis of similarities and differences identified the job demands affecting cancer nurses, and conversely, any positive job resources which may buffer these demands. Job demands identified in both cases appeared to have similar causes but were more explicitly linked to poor resourcing in the regional case. Job resources identified in both cases were similar, but it was noted how few job resources were available to buffer the many demands inherent in cancer nurses’ work. This multiple case study found that the work of cancer nurses is high in demands and low in resources. Conclusions Despite challenging work conditions, findings identified a highly engaged workforce. The job resources identified in this study suggest there are modifiable strategies to cultivate a supportive work environment for cancer nurses.

Language teachers’ experiences as materials designers have been identified to be influenced by various factors at different contextual levels, including teaching experience. Language teachers with varying experience levels exhibit different ways of responding to the challenges they experience. However, there is an inadequate understanding of the influence of teaching experience on language teachers’ professional development in their role as materials designers. This article reports on a comparative case study investigating the similarities and differences in the challenges that novice teachers and experienced teachers encounter and the strategies that they use to address these challenges. We collected data from interviews, personal materials, and WeChat conversations with four teachers who were in the process of designing teaching materials. The findings show that although these teachers face similar challenges in relation to, e.g., knowledge in materials selection and task design, experienced language teachers tend to interact with colleagues and students and draw upon prior experiences to respond to these challenges, while novice language teachers’ responses are more cognition-oriented. This highlights the need to provide resources and support tailored to each group of teachers, bolstering novice teachers' ability to utilize social resources while also enhancing experienced teachers' motivation to acquire more knowledge.

This study explores how the "1.5km Experiential Learning Circle" (ELC) in Hong Kong enhances student engagement and fosters stronger connections with the local community. The ELC encourages students to actively learn by experiencing real-world locations within a 1.5km radius of their schools, including nearby businesses, cultural landmarks, historical sites, government premises, and natural sites. Teachers support this process by identifying local issues and leveraging community resources to enhance learning, including encouraging students to address social challenges and collaborate with external organizations to assist those in need. Through interviews and observations with students, teachers, and community members, this qualitative research investigates how the ELC enhances students' learning performance, motivation, and attitudes while fostering social responsibility and community engagement. Teachers observed that students became more eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-life contexts through activities like analyzing local businesses, engaging with elders, and solving community issues. Students noted these experiences deepened their understanding, boosted motivation, and enhanced critical thinking. This study highlights the potential of the ELC as a model for experiential learning in urban communities, offering valuable insights for educators looking to create more practical and community-centered learning experiences.

Amidst globalization, there is an emerging issue to strengthen students’ local identity since the trend of English teaching is shifting from using English-speaking culture materials into integrating local culture. As a multicultural country, Indonesia has great potential to incorporate local culture into education. This concept, known as ethnopedagogy, utilizes local culture to strengthen genuine Indonesian education, considering that local culture is a source of innovation and skills that can be empowered in the classroom. Therefore, this research investigates the insights of young learners (aged 10-11 years old) regarding Sundanese cultural integration in their English language learning. Guided by an interpretivist paradigm, this qualitative case study seeks to explore the students’ learning experiences and insights. This research involved a class of English for Young Learners class in one of English language courses in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Data were collected using classroom observation, interview, and field notes. The findings revealed that integrating Sundanese culture into English lessons was a novel experience for the students, differing significantly from their school-based English learning. Furthermore, this approach fostered a sense of participation in preserving culture since students had better understanding about their own culture. In addition, it contributed to improvement in attention span, excitement, memory, knowledge, English score at school, and students relationship. Also, parents appreciated Sundanese culture integration into their children’s English learning. They perceived it as a means to preserve Sundanese culture while also support their cultural values and educational foundation at home and help them navigate the challenges of modern society.

This article examines the experience of working graduate students who engage with classroom assignments which provide meaning and value outside of a single point-in-time evaluation of learning. In particular, this qualitative case study sought to understand students’ perceptions of the usefulness of reusable, or non-disposable, assignments. Findings indicate that graduate students working in a closely related field perceive that hands-on application aids in their learning and retention of course content. Many students intentionally seek opportunities to structure course assignments in such a way that they could be used in the workplace. This study investigates how working graduate students employ course-created content in their lives and jobs outside of the classroom and uses Knowles’ (1980, 1984) andragogy theory as a possible explanation for student perceptions of increased learning and value-add of reusable assignments.

Jakarta, Indonesia, is in crisis due to the need for affordable housing. Transitoriented developments (TODs) could effectively address the country’s housing shortage as TODs emerge as promising solutions for integrating public transport and residential functions. Furthermore, public-private partnerships (PPPs) could be the key to bridging the funding gap and providing the necessary expertise for large-scale developments. However, the following question remains: How can PPPs provide affordable housing, which is a critical component of Jakarta’s TOD areas, when land prices are so high? The present study used a particular method to explore the potential benefits and constraints of PPPs in promoting affordable housing in Jakarta’s TOD areas and examining key stakeholders’ perspectives. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, including a survey of the young mid-lower group, in-depth interviews with private developers and focused group discussions (FGDs) on the possibility of utilising PPPs. The study also reviewed housing policy documents and reports related to TODs and PPPs in Jakarta and successful PPPs for affordable housing projects in other countries. The study findings highlighted the challenges of utilising PPPs to establish affordable housing in TOD areas and revealed possible ways to address those issues, such as by taking advantage of reasonably priced land in the suburbs, balancing PPP profitability with affordability goals and fostering accountable partnerships. These insights are highlighted for understanding the complexities of PPP-driven affordable housing in TOD areas. The findings also indicated that effective PPPs in Jakarta’s TOD areas should prioritise affordable housing for the upper-middle class. Meanwhile, to support the lower classes in the city, PPPs must use state-owned land or a conversion strategy through housing development in periphery TOD areas.

Conventionally, the quantitative research approach is believed to be used in natural science to experiment with phenomena and test theories and hypothesis. However, it has been practiced by researchers in social science and education at present. The study aims to critically analyze the philosophical stances of quantitative research and to explore the uses and limitations of quantitative research methods in education. I used document analysis as a research method where I collected previously published books, journal articles, and book chapters in the related field, read them, explored the required information from the materials, analyzed them critically, and made the arguments in different themes. The study revealed that quantitative research is based on the positivist paradigm which believes in objectivity, and experimental reality. It further showed that quantitative research is significant in the field of education to test the methods, and teaching-learning theories, to see the cause-and-effect relationship, and to see the causal relationship between the variables. Moreover, it shows that quantitative research is significant to explore the results that can be generalized in a large population. Additionally, the study explored that quantitative research has several issues such as negligence on educational complexities, sampling bias, issues of validity, and generalizability, and ethical issues related to consent, confidentiality, anonymity, sampling, data collection, interpretation, and reporting. It suggests that researchers in education should incorporate the qualitative method and mixed-method research to address diversity, emotion, experience, and multiple realities.

Objective This study aims to explore physical therapists’ perspectives on providing physical therapy to First Nations peoples in Canada via telehealth, specifically to understand 1) their perspectives on the feasibility of telehealth as a medium for health care delivery and 2) their experiences building trusting therapeutic relationships via telehealth care. Methods This study included 13 physical therapists who provided clinical care via telehealth for First Nations individuals in northern British Columbia in the past 3 years, and 7 master of physical therapy students undergoing or who completed their Indigenous Health clinical placement in the past 3 years and utilized telehealth. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted. Interview questions explored: telehealth usage and acceptance, experiences with telehealth, and overall recommendations for telehealth. Audio recordings were transcribed, and reflexive thematic analysis was conducted. Results Three overarching themes were identified: “Telehealth can make a huge difference, but it is widely underutilized;” “Telehealth is a little bit less personal and in-depth;” and “There is a time and place for telehealth.” Conclusion Telehealth shows promise in the delivery of physical therapist services to First Nations communities in Canada, enhancing accessibility, offering flexible scheduling options, and optimizing therapist time efficiency. However, successful implementation in these communities is contingent upon addressing several challenges, including building trusting therapeutic relationships. Technological glitches, the absence of physical interaction, and a history of trauma may hinder the development of the therapeutic relationship in telehealth encounters. To mitigate these challenges, cultural safety training, initial in-person appointments, community familiarity, and in-person support from a caregiver or other health care provider may play pivotal roles. Impact This study not only sheds light on the underutilization of telehealth but also underscores its potential to significantly improve the accessibility and efficiency of physical therapist services to First Nations peoples in Canada. The findings emphasize the nuanced dynamics of therapeutic relationships in telehealth, offering critical insights for the integration of culturally sensitive practices. Addressing the challenges pinpointed can enhance the quality of telehealth care for First Nations individuals, promote more equitable healthcare delivery, and foster positive health outcomes.

Anahtar Kelimeler: Akran zorbalığı, öğrenci, öğretmen, zorbalık türleri Abstract: Peer bullying, in general, refers to incidents of harassment, abuse, and mistreatment that occur continuously among individuals of the same or similar age, based on an imbalance of power. Research on peer bullying often examines the issue from either the student's or the teacher's perspective. In the present study, the issue of peer bullying is examined from the perspectives of both students and teachers. The study group consisted of 12 middle school students and four teachers who taught these students. The majority of the students (n=11) were male, while the majority of the teachers (n=3) were female. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with both students and teachers. Both data collection instruments were developed by the researchers. The collected data were analysed using content and descriptive analysis techniques. To ensure data reliability, attention was paid to inter-coder agreement during the analysis process. According to the research results, students were mostly exposed to verbal and physical bullying, while sexual bullying was the least encountered. Students offered inadequate solutions to bullying situations, such as retaliating with bullying or remaining silent. Similarly, teachers reported witnessing mostly verbal bullying and stated that they had not witnessed sexual bullying. According to the teachers, family reasons were the main cause of bullying. It was offered that raising awareness among families, students, and teachers regarding peer bullying and updating their knowledge on this subject is essential.

This research aims to explore the role of public libraries in the development of rural communities and its impact on social inclusion. The replication of the Social Inclusion-Based Library Transformation Program (TPBIS) was carried out by the Regional Library and Archives Office of Gunung Kidul (public library) to support the development of rural communities. Data collection methods included participant observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving 5 facilitators and 10 participants from rural communities engaged in community development activities through the library. The research results indicate that the proper selection of libraries is crucial to ensure that the program aligns with the needs and potential of the village. Village libraries not only serve as book repositories but also act as centers for sharing information and community activities in various fields. Two village libraries, located in Kalurahan Mulo and Kalurahan Tepus, Gunung Kidul district, have two activities related to batik. The interaction activities facilitated by the library enable rural communities to actively engage in social, economic, and cultural activities. It is evident that the batik activities organized in the library not only serve as a platform for preserving local culture but also provide economic opportunities for the community. The research findings highlight the importance of the role of village libraries in promoting social inclusion and the development of rural communities.

Methods This study employs the Job Demands Resource Model (JD-R model) to better understand the experiences of cancer nurses’ work and describe factors which ameliorate burnout and work-related stress. A multiple case study research design was used in this study, with two groups of cancer nurses making up a total of 30 participants, allocated to separate cases bounded by geographical location. A two-phase study of Australian cancer nurses in metropolitan and regional healthcare services was conducted from 2019–2021.

Research in management needs to contribute to practical relevance and applicability of research results. An approach that acknowledges the needs that emerge from practice and still offers guidance for proper research, is action research. The purpose of this paper is to expand the action research methodology, focusing the researcher’s role. Two consecutive action research projects were reviewed and reflected upon from a literature-based model. The projects were analysed iteratively by two participating researchers with different experiences and backgrounds. The main finding is the outline of the mixed role in action research projects, which allows for performing high quality research in parallel with interventions in the study object organisations. Development of the mixed role concept allows practically oriented research and interventions in research projects to be developed alongside traditional research, which at large can encourage researchers to take part in practical managerial development. The action research methods were successful in the projects, as they provided a fast-track to deep insights in the companies and the ability to act and evaluate results. With the mixed role approach, we could quickly come down to details, expose assumptions, discuss new solutions and come up with more profound research questions. The mixed consultant/researcher role has been a means to keep the research schedule within acceptable limits. Hence, a consciously managed project with in-depth considerations of the mixed role of the researcher can in itself remove one of the main obstacles of action research. The mixed role is a novel concept, pragmatic but still well aligned with prior research. The establishment of the concept can inspire more researchers performing action research.

An agrotechnological district (ATD) integrates sustainable agricultural practices and technologies, aiming to transform rural communities by stimulating socioeconomic development and addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ingaí, a dairy-producing municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil, stands to benefit from the implementation of an ATD. This study aimed to identify the opportunities and challenges for the implementation of an ATD in the municipality, considering its socioeconomic characteristics, the level of producers’ technological adoption, connectivity infrastructure, support networks, and rural and market management. The method was based on an exploratory case study, using semi-structured group interviews for data collection, conducted in March 2024, with agricultural stakeholders. As a result, key challenges emerged: limited connectivity infrastructure; ineffective property management; rural family succession problems; barriers in accessing credit; resistance to the adoption of technologies; and dependence on the local government. Opportunities included the strengthening of support networks among the agents of rural productive activity; the promotion of technology adoption by producers; and creating training and rural extension programs. The adoption of these initiatives can stimulate Ingaí’s economic and social development, generate multiplier effects in its region of influence, and serve as a model for other initiatives in the state of Minas Gerais, the main dairy hub in the country, and one of the primary drivers of Brazilian agribusiness.

Ethics is critical in the development and the profession of an engineer, whose role can require making potentially life- and environmentally- altering decisions. The topic of this inquiry surrounded the difficulty of teaching engineering ethics to 1st-year engineering students who lack “on the job” experience or formal ethics training through a research ethics board basics course or the Tri-Council ethical conduct for research involving humans training. To better serve the students, we must first understand their relationship with ethics and their understanding of them to date. In order to consider students’ digital citizenship and critical media literacy, this was done through a mixed-methods case study using social media thanks to the opportunity to utilize social media interactions with the Engineers Nova Scotia’s Code of Ethics, which contains the guiding principles in the province where the study took place. The principal investigator, a professional engineer, had a long-standing interest in how curriculum and personal/professional identities intersect for students. Data collection took place over two terms in a 1st-year engineering course with the inquiry question: “How can social media platforms be utilized to explore and teach engineering ethics in the 1st-year engineering program?” Findings suggest how supporting student growth through post-secondary education, classroom-based teacher leadership can allow students and the instructor to grow together, linking lived experiences and daily activities to standards which often have legal repercussions, and which may be difficult for students to anticipate.

In the past few generations, the examination of the intricate relationship between economic growth and tourism development has been of paramount importance for emerging nations. Within Western Europe, Ireland's extraordinary ascent has emerged as a valuable lesson for other emerging and belatedly developing countries, regions, and even major cities. The compelling narrative of the 'Celtic Tiger' from the mid-1980s to the late 2000s has garnered significant interest from scholars and policymakers intrigued by the economic development model. However, to date, no study has utilized Ireland's economic boom as a case study for another emerging nation or region. This research gap has sparked our curiosity: Can the Celtic Tiger model still offer inspiration in 2024? As a result, our paper's principal objective is to integrate Ireland's economic growth model, specifically between 1985 and 1999, with the imminent government investments in the Dakhla Oued Eddahab region in Morocco. In our research, we will examine the ‘Celtic Tiger’ as a case study, underlying the strengths and weaknesses behind its boom and dust. In addition, we will compare Ireland’s attractiveness during the Celtic Tiger era versus Dakhla Oued Eddahab, in the present and future, along with inferring successful management strategies. Our study results are presented in three future policy suggestions, that may help an emerging country avoid the Celtic Tiger collapse risks. In conclusion, we will propose avenues for future research that can contribute to enhancing sustainable Moroccan investments in Dakhla Oued Eddahab, aligning with the principles of long-term environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
