INTRODUCTION
Between 2004 and 2008 the staff of the Department
of Zoology of the Hungarian Natural History Museum
(HNHM, Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum,
Budapest) carried out collectings of invertebrates in
the Maramureş region as part of a contract between the
Vasile Goldiş Western University (Universitatea de Vest
„Vasile Goldiş”, Arad) and the HNHM. The project was
completed with a series of papers summarizing the results
of the exploration. These were published in 2006 and
2008 in the 17th and 18th volumes of the journal Studia
Universitatis Vasile Goldiş, Seria Ştiinţele Vieţii (Arad).
A list of the beetles (Coleoptera) from Maramureş was
compiled by Merkl (2008).
In August of 2009, a further trip was organized
in Maramureş with the aim of accessing the subalpine
area of Pietroşul Rodnei, the highest part of Maramureş.
Although the weather adversely affected the work, a list
of the beetle species collected during this trip is given in
this paper.
A total of 85 species marked with asterisk (*) were
not found during the previous trips and consequently are
additional to Merkl (2008).
MATERIAL AND DATA PRESENTATION
All specimens are deposited in the Coleoptera
Collection of the HNHM. Label data of the specimens
are listed as follows: the settlement (town or village
as administrative unit) is mentioned first, followed by
topographical names and elevation of the locality then by
name of the habitat, collecting method, date of collecting
and monograms of the collectors (AG = Aranka Grabant,
OM = Ottó Merkl, TN = Tamás Németh, ZGy = Zoltán
György).
Identification of the specimens was carried out by
Hungarian coleopterists. Their names are given under the
names of beetle families. The sequence of the families
follows Merkl & Vig (1995).

DISCUSSIONS
The present paper lists 266 beetle species from the
Maramureş region, Romania. Most of them are well-
known inhabitants of the Carpathians and Romania. The
following species deserve special attention.
Amara misella Miller, 1868 (Carabidae) (Fig. 1) – It
is endemic to subalpine and alpine belts of the Eastern
and Southerns Carpathians.
Hypsonothrus deubeli (Ganglbauer 1896)
(Staphylinidae) (Fig. ) – Not a strictly alpine species,
but endemic in the Carpathians. It is known from the
major mountain ranges of the Eastern and Southern
Carpathians, most specimens are from limestone or
partly limestone mountains. Flightless, it lives in alpine
meadows, frequently found among grasses and roots
of plants. It was also sifted from mosses and plants

in between stones, but at the same time, its nearest
relatives are confined to edges of withdrawing (melting)
snowpathches. The specimens were mostly found in the
summer months.
Xantholinus procerus Erichson 1839 (Staphylinidae)
(Fig. 3) – It occurs in the Northern and Eastern parts of
Central Europe, in the Balkans, Turkey and the Caucasus.
In the Carpathians it was so far found in Maramureş and
in the southern half of Transylvania (Sighisoara; Sasca
Montana: bank of Nera). Mostly on riverbanks, between
and under stones, but now one specimen was found
by sifting oak litter. An extremely rare species, only
collected in the summer months.
Chrysolina carpathica carpathica (Fuss, 1856)
(Chrysomelidae) (Fig. 4) – The nominotypical subspecies
occurs in the Eastern and Southeastern Carpathians (in
Romania and Ukraine), while Chrysolina carpathica
gabrieli (Weise, 1903) in the Northern Carpathians
(Slovakia and Poland). This flightless species inhabits the
subalpine meadows. Csiki (1951) erroneously mentioned
it from the Munţii Rodnei under the name Chrysomela
lichenis Richt.” as a synonym of the latter. However,
Chrysolina lichenis (Richter, 1820) and C. carpathica
are distinct species.
Oreina viridis (Duftschmid, 1825) (Chrysomelidae)
(Fig. 5) – It is distributed from the Vosges and the Pyrenees
through the Alps and the Carpathians to the western part
of the Balkan Peninsula. According to some authors
(e.g. Kaszab, 1962) its foodplant is Green Alder (Alnus
viridis). However, this may be based on a misinterpreted
observation, since all Europaean congeners feed on
herbaceous plants, mainly on species of Apiaceae and
Asteraceae. Koch (1992) writes that „Larvenfrass an
Ligusticum mutellina”; this plant, Mountain Lovage is a
member of Apiaceae.
Csiki (1951) published a comprehensive account
of the beetles known to occur in Munţii Rodnei (the
whole massif, not only the smaller part belonging to
Maramureş), based on literature data and previously
unpublished collectings. He listed 1342 species and
„varieties”, and noted that „Mit dieser ansehnlichen Zahl
gelangte das Radnaer Gebirge als bisher besterforschte
Gebirgsgegend der Karpaten an die erste Stelle der
Karpathenkette” [With this considerable number Rodna
Mountains, the so far best studied mountainous region
of the Carpathians, arrives at the first place in the chain
of the Carpathians.”] Since then a number of records or
even species lists of various beetle groups were published
from Munţii Rodnei, but as far as we know his paper
is the only complete inventory of Coleoptera of these
mountains. The following 124 species mentioned in
Merkl (2008) and in the present paper were not reported

CORRECTION OF A PREVIOUS RECORD
Dasytes hickeri Kaszab, 1955 (Dasytidae) was
recorded by Merkl (2008) as a species new to Romania.
Dr Gianfranco Liberti (Uboldo, Italy) checked the
voucher specimen and considers the record to be
a misidentification of a specimen of Dasytes niger
(Linnaeus, 1760).
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Our most sincere thanks are due to József Béres

Among the ten species of the Nebria genus, present in the Romanian Carpathians, seven are the object of morphological, geographical distribution and molecular biological studies: Nebria (Eunebria) jockischi hoepfneri Dejean, 1826, Nebria (Boreonebria) heegeri Dejean, 1826, Nebria (Boreonebria) gyllenhali Schönherr, 1806, Nebria (Alpaeonebria) reichei Dejean, 1826, Nebria (Alpaeonebria) reitteri Rybinsky, 1902, Nebria (Alpaeonebria) bissenica Bielz, 1887, Nebria (Nebria) transsylvanica Germar, 1824, Nebria (Nebria) femoralis alpigrada Csiki 1905), collected from the Maramureș Mt., Rodnei Mt., Parâng Mt., Rarău Mt., Făgăraș Mt., Cozia Mt., Bucegi Mt., Retezat Mt., Muntele Mic and Semenic Mt. The morphological description exploits the body size, the elytral reflection, the colour of the appendages and the legs, the shape of the first antennary segment, its chaetotaxy and that of the submentum, the shape and size of the elytra and alae, the position of the bristles on the ventrites 4-5-6. The shape of the first antennary segment and its chaetotaxy appear as more discriminating criteria, but supposes the integrity of the bristles. The identification is sometimes malaise due to the fragility of the bristles (first antennomere, submentum). Nebria (Alpaeonebria) reichei Dejean, 1826 has a variable chaetotaxy of antenna, 1 to 3 bristles on the first antennomere. The individuals with yellow appendages and legs provided with 2 unequal length can be confused with transsylvanica. They are distinguished by the triangular shape of the aileron (S-shaped in transsylvanica). Molecular data are given for the first time on Carpathian Nebria. The mitochondrial markers (COI I, cyt b) clearly identify the species studied and confirm that alpigrada does not belong to transsylvanica. The results show an infraspecific variability of geographic and altitudinal origin in jockischi one of the most widespread species (gyllenhali, jockischi, reichei).

Study of the soil beetle fauna as an ecological indicator could be relevant considering that it is very well-represented in all types of terrestrial ecosystems, with species belonging to all trophic categories (predators, scavengers/decomposers, phytophagous) and methods of sampling the soil fauna are very accurate. The present studies were carried out in the largest standard protected area of the Carpathians-the Pietrosul Rodnei Biosphere Reserve. Species diversity was estimated using the jackknife technique and the S* method, the latter of which is based on a log-normal fitting curve (Ludwig and Reynolds, 1988). A total of 103 soil beetle species (belonging to 21 families) were collected in habitats from alpine, subalpine, and montane zones. The estimated species richness is given for each sampled zone. The observed number of species exceeds 60% of the estimated number of species for all investigated areas. The species richness and structure of the soil beetle fauna exhibit evident differences (statistically tested) in forests in different phases of development. The cluster and correspondence analyses performed for alpine, subalpine, and montane forested habitats showed an altitudinal gradient in the distribution of species and faunal differences between forests in different development phases. Up to now, a large number of studies on the fauna of ground beetles (Carabidae), most of them predators, have been used worldwide for biodiversity monitoring. Our study confirms that structural changes in the soil beetle fauna (as an ensemble) are profound and reflect the reaction of different trophic categories to ecological changes. The response of the soil beetle fauna to habitat changes (as manifested in species richness and faunal structure) observed in this particular case (in which five different types of habitats are compared), indicates its relevance for ecological studies on a larger scale.
