Abstract

The article discusses a case study that stems from actual events, targets the issue of ethics in schools, and is applicable for use in a variety of educational leadership courses. The article examines the issues related to ethical responsibilities and high-stakes testing in public schools. The administration must decide what actions to take following the questionable practices of a teacher during the administration of a standardized test. The decisions of the parent, teacher, and principal will have an impact not only on the students currently enrolled in the class but also on the future educational practices within this campus and district.

This investigation explores the relationships between principal influence and four facets of organizational climate: institutional vulnerability, collegial leadership, achievement press, and professional teacher behavior. Data were collected from 2,033 teachers at 112 elementary schools in two states from the Southern and Midwestern United States. The results of multiple linear regression analyses show that the independent variables of principal influence, SES, and school size combinedto form a significant portion of the variance in organizational climate. The four facets of organizational climate explored in this study provide insight into specific mechanisms through which influential principals can positively affect schools.

Existing theoretical models of individual ethical decision making in organizations place little or no emphasis on characteristics of the ethical issue itself. This article (a) proposes an issue-contingent model containing a new set of variables called moral intensity; (b) using concepts, theory, and evidence derived largely from social psychology, argues that moral intensity influences every component of moral decision making and behavior; (c) offers four research propositions; and (d) discusses implications of the theory.

The original Vroom-Yetton leadership model has been of enormous significance in the academic community, business, and government organizational settings. This model is made obsolete by a new leadership model introduced for the first time in "The New Leadership: Managing Participation in Organizations." The most sophisticated—yet most practical—theory in organizational behavior/organizational psychology, this topical approach applies the methods of management science to situational leadership and worker participation in decision making. This provocative volume presents a systematic course of training in the fundamentals of situational leadership—an alternative to the Japanese style of management. The authors argue that effective leadership depends on understanding the requirements of a given situation and assessing how much participation or power sharing is essential for success and what form that participation should take. To accomplish this, Vroom and Jago identify situational variables, evaluate their role in the decision-making process, and integrate this information in a sensible model. The pioneering model outlined in this book qualifies as a computer-based "expert system," drawing on decision trees, simultaneous equations, and computer simulations, while applying the model to a set of cases throughout. Designed for executive training and development programs as well as upper-level and graduate courses in organizational behavior and organizational psychology, this state-of-the-art approach is enhanced by chapter vignettes, case studies, chapter summaries, and references.
