Preface
Dear Friends and Colleagues
On behalf of the International Society for Bioelectromagnetism, the Ragnar Granit Institute and the
Ragnar Granit Foundation, I welcome you to the l st International Conference on Bioelectromagnetism.
This series of conferences was established because the electric and magnetic fields are, on the basis of
Maxwell's equations, inseparable, and therefore bioelectric and biomagnetic fields should be discussed
in the same connection. In this way we get the most use of bioelectric and biomagnetic phenomena.
Bioelectric and biomagnetic phenomena have been a central theme in the World Congresses of
Biomedical Engineering. But starting a new series of conferences under the title of bioelectromagnetism
emphasizes the importance of this discipline.
This conference is organrzed jointly with the 10th Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical
Engineering. In addition to the aforementioned, this conference has attracted a large number of well
known scientists from altogether 20 countries from all over the world to submit 150 papers for oral and
poster presentations. The papers represent all main aspects of bioelectromagnetism. They are divided
to four tracks which include altogether 20 themes. The conference program also includes seven
State-of-the-Art lectures from different subfields of bioelectromagnetism, one of these lecturers being
Nobel Pnze winner Ivan Giaever.
Though this conference is the first one of its kind, the active worldwide participation encourages me
to believe, that the series of International Conferences on Bioelectromagnetism will get a good start and
I am looking forward to meeting all of you and other colleagues in the 2nd International Conference on
Bioelectromagnetism.
Jaakko Malmivuo
President of the conference
