Sensing Road Roughness via Mobile Devices: a Study on Speed Influence

This work is part of a project, SmartRoadSense, aimed to estimate the quality of the road surface exploiting the sensors of a mobile device anchored to the car cabin. Using the data of the triaxial accelerometer and the vehicle speed provided by GPS system, it has been shown that an estimate of the quality of road surface can be obtained. Using a theoretical model and experimental results, it is shown how the average power of the vertical acceleration and the road roughness index estimated by SmartRoadSense are related to speed.

We performed a number of controlled experiments to understand which factors impact the collection of accelerometer data with smartphones. We conclude that the quality of data acquired is not significantly affected by using different smartphones, car mounts, rates of sampling, or vehicles for the purpose of developing ADAS. Our results indicate that smartphone sensors can be used to develop ADAS.

Vehicle and Occupant Response in Low Speed Car to Barrier Override Impacts

In an effort to add to the base of knowledge relative to low speed bumper override impacts, the authors conducted a series of barrier impacts involving several vehicles with human occupants. The impacts were in the 3 to 8 km/hr range. The vehicles were instrumented with an accelerometer and a velocity sensor. The occupants were instrumented with 8 accelerometers. For comparison, each vehicle ... [Show full abstract] (with occupant) was first impacted into the barrier with normal bumper contact. Then, an override fixture was attached to the barrier, and other impacts were performed while maintaining all other conditions as identical as possible. Comparison of occupant accelerations for barrier versus override impacts at similar speeds is presented. Photographs of test damage as presented may be useful in estimating speed change and/or accelerations of other vehicles involved in actual accidental collisions.
