Architectured based Prototypes for Mobile Collaborative Learning to improve Pedagogical activities

Abstract

Deployment of new emerging technologies have attracted and motivated a great deal of attention from researchers and scientist in various disciplines to develop and design the learning management systems, virtual learning environments and conference systems with support of MCL for education and other organizations. This technological revolution of connecting large numbers of potential learners through mobile telephony creates new challenges for developing the new architectures for education and business. Some of the MCL paradigms are proposed and implemented in various fields such as university, corporate, health and military but they lack completeness. This paper introduces new server and client side architectural based prototypes with support of various working components, which help the users in obtaining the contents from server to meet the pedagogical requirements. This paper has also proposed and integrated the features of content-server with cache-server to provide the faster delivery of contents for MCL. Finally, The paper proposes and implements some features of a novel “group application” to support asynchronous and synchronous and multimodal features to facilitate the students for MCL. This contribution will encourage and motivate the students to pursue their education again because the students will be able to get the course contents at anytime and anywhere.






With deployment of modern technologies, interest of people have diverted from Computer-Supported learning to mobile-supported learning. Mobile learning is greatly demanded in educational organizations to demonstrate the pedagogical activities. Some of MCL supportive frameworks and applications have been introduced in numerous fields to advance the activities of those organizations but they require more succinct standard to sustain collaboration successfully. This paper introduces the new marking and heuristic evaluation method that provides educational support and gives entire picture for developing new educational group application for MCL. The features of application support asynchronous and synchronous collaboration. To authenticate various features of application, usability testing is conducted that helps to find the feedback of users. Mobile phones are primarily designed for enabling communication over wireless network infrastructure like cellular network through audio calling. Nowadays, they are getting smarter and becoming the center of entertainments by running different apps. As the devices are very much portable to the day-to-day activities of the public, their usage can further be exploited in the education industry. In this study, hybridized architecture is proposed for higher education exploiting mobile learning scenario. This architecture is used to combine the strength of both the native and Web apps in order to make the mobile learning app on time through push notifications. Mobile apps developed in hybrid architecture are installable and can pull content from the Internet independent of browsers. Generally, by designing the whole system’s physical architecture, a prototype implementation was made in agile process model. Finally, the prototype was evaluated and validated to perform well for the core functionalities stipulated as usage scenarios.

Due to the improvement of mobile computing and wireless technology, nowadays mobile devices have become an important tool for learning and collaborations. Mobile Collaborative Learning (MCL) is an approach whereby users are virtually learning together by using their mobile devices via a communication network. This learning process taking place by a means of discussions forums, chatting, sharing learning materials such as files, video and sounds. As the demand for accessing these online learning resources increases, there is a concerned problem on how to manage this huge number of users to access services continuously and simultaneously with a guarantee of better services. Cloud computing is found to be a solution for this problem. It has a significant effect since it guarantees the users better performance, efficiency, security as well as maintenances with a minimum cost. The introduction on Mobile Collaborative learning in this field is very useful as many of the students and other individuals afford to own devices that can be used in the collaboration and learning process via cloud environment such as smartphones, tablets and PDA. In this paper, a Mobile Collaborative Learning, MCL architecture is proposed, the architecture describe in details on how the users will able to collaborate using their mobile devices to access and share information for learning purpose. This work investigates university students' acceptance and readiness for adopting collaborative and context-aware mobile learning services. An acceptance evaluation study was conducted to identify challenges affecting successful implementation and adoption of collaborative mlearning system. The acceptance study has focused on learning contextual factors and learners requirements available at developing countries, where Jordan was considered as the case of this research. Results have confirmed that learning style, mobile device capability and perceived ease of use are having the most positive contribution towards learners' behavior to use collaborative m-learning services. In light of the achieved results, this work provides a new user acceptance model focused toward the adoption of collaborative m-learning services. Finally, this research draws fundamental recommendations allowing for learning context adaptation and successful collaborative m-learning services implementation.

In this paper, we present our novel contribution methodology based on the results of case study that has been implemented in our research environment to test with new technique the usability of both intelligent Android and Apple phones. This analysis of the case study stands for features similar to applications, operating system, hardware and software structure, battery life, and online based websites. Multiple interrogations were applied to collect user answers ongoing features. Users directly react by responding based on their daily used product experience. Consequently, the estimation is based on the data that has been unregistered from the user. The most recent results will end up by introducing a combination of ideal features on both products to build a wonderful extended product in the future.

Latest study shows that MCL is highly focusing paradigm for research particularity in distance and online education. MCL provides some features and functionalities for all participants to obtain the knowledge. Deployment of new emerging technologies and fast growing trends toward MCL boom attract people to develop learning management system, virtual learning environment and conference system with support of MCL. All these environments lack the most promising supportive framework. In addition some of major challenges in open, large scale, dynamic and heterogeneous environments are not still handled in developing MCL for education and other organizations. These issues includes such as knowledge sharing, faster delivery of contents, request for modified contents, complete access to enterprise data warehouse, delivery of large rich multimedia contents (video-on-demand), asynchronous collaboration, synchronous collaboration, support for multi model, provision for archive updating, user friendly interface, middleware support and virtual support. To overcome these issues; the paper introduces novel framework for MCL consisting of four layers with many promising functional components, which provide access to users for obtaining required contents from enterprise data warehouse (EDW). Novel framework provides information regarding the course materials, easy access to check the grades and use of labs. The applications running on this framework give substantial feedback for collaboration such as exchange for delivery of communication contents including platform for group discussion, short message service (SMS), emails, audio, video and video-on-demand to obtain on-line information to students and other persons who will be part of collaboration.

With dramatic increase in the mobile technology, the mobile cellular phones have played a significant role in the several fields particularly, education, military, business and health. The deployment of mobile phone in the Government has been of high interest of research community to improve fundamental functions, efficient information provision and augmenting the quality of service QoS provisioning. A lot of research is conducted for service improvement in Mobile Government(MGovernment), but there is marginal research is available for security particularly privacy preserving of M-Government. In this paper, the authors propose privacy preserving framework for M-Government to secure an administration interface to avoid possible security threats. The proposed framework is verified using mathematical formulation. Furthermore, the proposed framework is tested using Java Platform. The experimental results confirm the reliability, efficiency and QoS provision of the privacy preserving framework.

E-government plays an increasingly significant role in our day-to-day lives. Mobile government (m-Government) is a subset and extension of electronic government e-Government comprising of an alternative channel for governments to improve governments' fundamental functions and providing information and services. This paper introduces an interactive framework for m-Government that improves governmental public services with self-dependability and adaptability in the highly dynamic contextual environment. The proposed interactive framework is composed of eight elements: front ending organizations portal and personalization, existing e-government service systems, interaction and transaction, vertical & horizontal integration channels, electronic participation, m-government core platform, delivery service channels, and end customer. Experiments were conducted to validate the framework's feasibility and results demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed framework.

Mobile learning (m-learning) is a highly popular multidisciplinary study field around the world. Thus, mobile learning has been defined differently by different people. This study is a review of m-learning literature for understanding and discussion of current perspectives and theories in mobile learning. Additionally, some m-learning practices that are implemented in different sectors such as corporate, university and military have been mentioned. INTRODUCTION Mobile devices are commonly used all around the world. In some countries, mobile devices are much more widely used than computers. For instance, people in Kenya are able to use mobile devices everywhere to access the internet, check e-mail, make phone calls, send SMS messages, etc. Mobile learning has come to people's attention because mobile devices are portable, ubiquitous, easily accessible and used by many people. This situation shows that there is great potential to enchance learning with mobile devices. Mobile Learning Perspectives Mobile learning (m-learning) is defined differently by different people. Early perspectives of m-learning were focused on technology, and defined as the delivery of training by means of mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and digital audio players, as well as digital cameras and voice recorders, pen scanners, etc. For example, MoLoNET (2007) defined it as "The exploitation of ubiquitous handheld technologies, together with wireless and mobile phone networks, to facilitate, support, enhance and extend the reach of teaching and learning." Another view of m-learning focuses on mobility. Keagen (2005) suggests that m-learning should be restricted to learning on small and portable devices. According to him, mobile devices could be carried everywhere. For example, a lady can carry in her handbag or a gentleman can carry in his pocket. So this definition also relates to a technocentric perspective because of concentrating on the size of mobile devices.

Informal educational experiences with grandparents and other older adults can be an important component of children"s education, especially in circumstances where high quality educational services and facilities are not readily available. Mobile devices offer unique capabilities to support such interactions. We report on an ongoing participatory design project with an intergenerational design group to create mobile applications for reading and editing books, or even creating all new stories on an Apple iPhone. This paper describes the theoretical and technical foundations for designing and developing an effective mobile collaborative learning (MCL) environment. The paper suggests a prototype based on client-server side with the support of functional components and working procedures, which help users to obtain contents from a server to meet the pedagogical needs. The proposed prototype provides the best MCL environment for students who want to learn at home and working places through mobiles. Finally, to find valuable hidden issues, the paper introduces a new application, “group” in Android operating system, and then conducts usability test in order to facilitate users for accessing and obtaining the contents in collaboration learning procedures.

With the gradual adoption of "Web 2.0" technologies, one of key Web 2.0 technologies, blog, has become a popular and wide-accepted Web application. Although mobile device users can access the Web whenever or wherever the need arises, there is not an easy way to publish their thoughts and experiences via blog articles. In this study, we offer a solution by designing a mobile blogging system which enables mobile bloggers to publish their comments in authentic context anytime and anywhere. We show that with the help of the mobile blogging system, we can establish a collaborative learning model for students in virtual classrooms. The results revealed from the learning outcome are positive and encouraging regarding the effectiveness of the supported collaborative learning model. In the conclusions, we discuss the findings and applications of the proposed system in collaborative learning.

Although various collaborative systems have successfully improved enterprise work efficiency, mobile collaborative systems, which allow collaboration via wireless networks and mobile devices, still lack robust functionality and content representation support. The paper proposes a novel mobile collaboration framework for multimedia content generation, representation and delivery. A unified file format and a message queue management middleware, designed for, and employed in, a heterogeneous computing environment, are also discussed.

The increasing use of mobile devices and the dissemination of wireless networks have stimulated mobile and ubiquitous computing research. In this context, education is being considered one of the main application areas. This paper proposes the use of mobile and ubiquitous computing to support and improve learning in a new kind of academic structure called Undergraduate Course of Reference (nicknamed GRefe). The GRefe was proposed in Unisinos, a university located in south of Brazil. Currently, there are four GRefes. These courses are organized in Learning Programs and Learning Projects. They use a practical and multidisciplinary approach to stimulate the learning. We proposed the use of mobile and ubiquitous computing technology to articulate and improve the academic activities of a specific GRefe called Computer Engineering. We believe that GRefe organization simplified and stimulated the use of these technologies in a learning environment.

In order to support rich forms of collaborative learning, learners need appropriate tools to share, exchange, and negotiate their ideas. The use of wireless networked handheld computers in education is rapidly increasing, thus providing new opportunities to engage students in collaborative activities independent of time and space. In this paper, we describe our work in progress related to the design and implementation of a mobile and wireless application to support collaborative knowledge building. The paper presents an innovative approach for supporting the exchange and discovery of key ideas among students by using wireless optical readers, handheld devices and an application we have developed using Java and XML.

Wireless devices, such as smart phones and PDAs, are increasing in popularity due to the advantage of enhanced mobility and availability. In spite of the high increase in the availability of mobile devices, most of the wireless applications are in such areas as enterprise support, military, or gaming. Unfortunately, in the field of education, where online teaching and Web services are well accepted and adopted, wireless access to student records, course content, course registration, and other wireless Web services still is not available. This paper outlines the components of the project WELCOME (Wireless E-Learning and Communication Environment) at the University of Regensburg. We argue that mobile/electronic education should not attempt to replace traditional education with tutors and instructors but support both student and teacher by providing services that facilitate teaching, learning and education-related administrative tasks. The basic approach is integrative, combining a variety of devices (mobile and nonmobile) via a variety of transmitting techniques (wired and wireless).
