The services provided in clouds may represent an increase in the efficiency and effectiveness in the operations of the enterprise business, improving the cost-effectiveness related to services and resources consumption. However, there is concern about the privacy of data, since such data are outside the client’s domain. For these services to be effectively enjoyed by organizations it is necessary to provide access control. The objective of the first part of this tutorial is to provide identity management, based on digital identity federation, with authentication and authorization mechanisms for access control in cloud computing environments to independent, trusted third-parties. Green cloud computing aims at a processing infrastructure that combines flexibility, quality of services, and reduced energy utilisation. In order to achieve this objective, the management solution must regulate the internal settings to address the pressing issue of data center over provisioning related to the need to match the peak demand. In this context, we propose an integrated solution for environment, services and network management based on organization model of autonomous agent components. The second part of this tutorial introduces the system management model, analyses the system’s behaviour, describes the operation principles, and presents a case study scenario and some results. We extended CloudSim to simulate the organisation model approach and implemented the migration and reallocation policies using this improved version to validate our management solution. The aim of Green Cloud Computing is to achieve a balance between the resource consumption and quality of service. In order to achieve this objective and to maintain the flexibility of the cloud, dynamic provisioning and allocation strategies are needed to regulate the internal settings of the cloud to address oscillatory peaks of workload. In this context, we propose strategies to optimize the use of the cloud resources without decreasing the availability. The third part of this tutorial introduces two hybrid strategies based on a distributed system management model, describes the base strategies, operation principles, tests, and presents the results. We combine existing strategies to search their benefits. To test them, we extended CloudSim to simulate the organization model upon which we were based and to implement the strategies, using this improved version to validate our solution.

The services provided in clouds may represent an increase in the efficiency and effectiveness in the operations of the enterprise business, improving the cost-effectiveness related to services and resources consumption. However, there is concern about the privacy of data, since such data are outside the client's domain. For these services to be effectively enjoyed by organizations it is necessary to provide access control. The objective of this work is to provide identity management, based on digital identity federation, with authentication and authorization mechanisms for access control in cloud computing environments to independent, trusted third-parties.

The aim of Green Cloud Computing is to achieve a balance between the resource consumption and quality of service. In order to achieve this objective and to maintain the flexibility of the cloud, dynamic provisioning and allocation strategies are needed to regulate the internal settings of the cloud to address oscillatory peaks of workload. In this context, we propose strategies to optimize the use of the cloud resources without decreasing the availability. This work introduces two hybrid strategies based on a distributed system management model, describes the base strategies, operation principles, tests, and presents the results. We combine existing strategies to search their benefits. To test them, we extended CloudSim to simulate the organization model upon which we were based and to implement the strategies, using this improved version to validate our solution. Achieving a consumption reduction up to 87% comparing Standard Clouds with Green Clouds, and up to 52% comparing the proposed strategy with other Green Cloud Strategy.

Green cloud computing aims at a processing infrastructure that combines flexibility, quality of services, and reduced energy utilisation. In order to achieve this objective, the management solution must regulate the internal settings to address the pressing issue of data centre over-provisioning related to the need to match the peak demand. In this context, we propose an integrated solution for environment, services and network management based on organisation model of autonomous agent components. This work introduces the system management model, analyses the system's behaviour, describes the operation principles, and presents a case study scenario and some results. We extended CloudSim to simulate the organisation model approach and implemented the migration and reallocation policies using this improved version to validate our management solution.

With the advent of Cloud computing, large-scale virtualized compute and data centers are becoming common in the computing industry. These distributed systems leverage commodity server hardware in mass quantity, similar in theory to many of the fastest Supercomputers in existence today. However these systems can consume a cities worth of power just to run idle, and require equally massive cooling systems to keep the servers within normal operating temperatures. This produces CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and significantly contributes to the growing environmental issue of Global Warming. Green computing, a new trend for high-end computing, attempts to alleviate this problem by delivering both high performance and reduced power consumption, effectively maximizing total system efficiency. This paper focuses on scheduling virtual machines in a compute cluster to reduce power consumption via the technique of Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS). Specifically, we present the design and implementation of an efficient scheduling algorithm to allocate virtual machines in a DVFS-enabled cluster by dynamically scaling the supplied voltages. The algorithm is studied via simulation and implementation in a multi-core cluster. Test results and performance discussion justify the design and implementation of the scheduling algorithm.

An Entity-Centric Approach for Privacy and Identity Management in Cloud Computing

Entities (e.g., users, services) have to authenticate themselves to service providers (SPs) in order to use their services. An entity provides personally identifiable information (PII) that uniquely identifies it to an SP. In the traditional application-centric Identity Management (IDM) model, each application keeps trace of identities of the entities that use it. In cloud computing, entities may have multiple accounts associated with different SPs, or one SP. Sharing PIIs of the same entity across services along with associated attributes can lead to mapping of PIIs to the entity. We propose an entity-centric approach for IDM in the cloud. The approach is based on: (1) active bundles-each including a payload of PII, privacy policies and a virtual machine that enforces the policies and uses a set of protection mechanisms to protect themselves, (2) anonymous identification to mediate interactions between the entity and cloud services using entity's privacy policies. The main characteristics of the approach are: it is independent of third party, gives minimum information to the SP and provides ability to use identity data on untrusted hosts.

The term “cloud computing” has emerged as a major ICT trend and has been acknowledged by respected industry survey organizations as a key technology and market development theme for the industry and ICT users in 2010. However, one of the major challenges that faces the cloud computing concept and its global acceptance is how to secure and protect the data and processes that are the property of the user. The security of the cloud computing environment is a new research area requiring further development by both the academic and industrial research communities. Today, there are many diverse and uncoordinated efforts underway to address security issues in cloud computing and, especially, the identity management issues. This paper introduces an architecture for a new approach to necessary “mutual protection” in the cloud computing environment, based upon a concept of mutual trust and the specification of definable profiles in vector matrix form. The architecture aims to achieve better, more generic and flexible authentication, authorization and control, based on a concept of mutuality, within that cloud computing environment.

Cloud computing allows the use of Internet-based services to support business processes and rental of IT-services on a utility-like basis. It offers a concentration of resources but also poses risks for data privacy. A single breach can cause significant loss. The heterogeneity of “users” represents a danger of multiple, collaborative threats. In cloud computing, entities may have multiple accounts associated with a single or multiple service providers (SPs). Sharing sensitive identity information (that is, Personally Identifiable information or PII) along with associated attributes of the same entity across services can lead to mapping of the identities to the entity, tantamount to privacy loss. Identity management (IDM) is one of the core components in cloud privacy and security and can help alleviate some of the problems associated with cloud computing. Available solutions use trusted third party (TTP) in identifying entities to SPs. The solution providers do not recommend the usage of their solutions on untrusted hosts. We propose an approach for IDM, which is independent of TTP and has the ability to use identity data on untrusted hosts. The approach is based on the use of predicates over encrypted data and multi-party computing for negotiating a use of a cloud service. It uses active bundle-which is a middleware agent that includes PII data, privacy policies, a virtual machine that enforces the policies, and has a set of protection mechanisms to protect itself. An active bundle interacts on behalf of a user to authenticate to cloud services using user's privacy policies.
