Abstract
The dates of publication and exact titles of the 83 parts of the Zoology of the Report of the Scientific Results of the Voyage of
H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873–76 are presented. Exact dates of publication for 71 of these parts have been
determined using notices of their publication in contemporary publications. The dates of publication of the two Narrative
volumes of the voyage of the H.M.S. Challenger (which contain available indications of new names) are also determined.
Key words: H.M.S. Challenger, Britain, expedition, voyage, collation, dating, ICZN
Introduction
The multi-volume Report of the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873–76
has been described as “the most productive deep sea expedition, both in terms of new knowledge acquired and of
the number of new species described” (Lingwood 1969: 71). Despite the importance of the Reports, no studies
have discussed the dates of publication of the Zoology volumes of the Report of the Scientific Results of the Voyage
of H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873–76 (hereafter the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger), which comprise 32
of the 50 volumes of the entire Reports series. Murray (1895: xxiv) stated that the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger
were bound in “forty volumes”, and this listing of eight additional ‘volumes’ can be accounted for by the fact that
volumes 22, 51, 52, 53 were divided into two volumes each (one of text and one of plates) and volumes 40 and 67
were divided into three volumes each (two of text and one of plates) (see Table 1).
In Table 1, we provide the dates of publication and exact titles of the parts of the Zoology of H.M.S.
Challenger (Figs. 1, 2), as well as the two Narrative volumes which contain available indications of new names
(see Froglia & Clark 2011). The Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger was published in 83 parts which, with the
exception of the last, are contained in the 32 volumes of the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger (Table 1). It should be
noted that while volumes of the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger were published chronologically, the parts were not
(Table 1).
Brief History and Description of the Work
The Reports of the Challenger Expedition comprise studies on physics, chemistry, meterology, geology, petrology,
botany, and zoology. These are found in 50 royal quarto volumes published from 1880–1895.

Figure 1 shows the title-page of the first volume of the Zoology. Longmans was the primary publisher for the
first 16 volumes of the Zoology parts and Neill and Company in Edinburgh was the printer for the entire zoology
series except volume 15, which was printed by Ballantyne, Hanson and Company, Edinburgh (who also printed the
Botany volumes that appeared at around the same time). Eyre & Spottiswoode in London took over as the major
publisher from volume 17 onwards.

Institute and digitised under the Biodiversity Heritage Library initiative (see text for details). Note, the first line “( Provisional
Title )” was removed from the title page of this and successive volumes (see Fig. 1).
Scottish naturalist and marine zoologist, Charles Wyville Thompson (1830–1882), was the original
coordinator of the series until ill-health contracted in 1877 forced him to finally step down in late 1881.
Oceanographer and marine biologist John Murray (1831–1914) succeeded him in January 1882 and Wyville
Thompson died two months later. The title-page for each of the first three volumes has “( Provisional Title )”
printed at the top (see Fig. 1) because the order and format of the Reports had not been formalized while Wyville
Thompson was alive but in ill-health. When Murray took over in 1882 his name was added to the title page and the

“( Provisional Title )” line was removed (Fig. 2). Murray continued direction of the Reports through to the last
summary volume that appeared in 1895. A special commemorative volume (published by Dulau, London) with
portraits and signatures of most of the 76 authors who contributed to the Reports, was presented to Murray in 1897.
Dating the Zoology of the H.M.S. Challenger
Contemporary notices
By utilising notices of the volumes of the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger as they were published in contemporary
publications (see Table 1; Appendix), accurate dates of publications for 71 of the 83 parts of the Zoology of H.M.S.
Challenger and both the Narrative volumes have been determined (Table 1).
Specimen copies of the first seven parts
On 31 August 1880 at a British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting, “Mr. Sclater, on behalf of Sir
C. Wyville Thomson, who was unable to attend the meeting, laid on the table specimen copies of the following
reports on the zoological results obtained during the voyage of H.M.S. ‘Challenger.’ These reports would
ultimately form the first volume of the ‘Zoology’ of the expedition, which would very shortly be ready for general
issue …” (Sclater 1881: 606). The reports that were “laid on the table” were the first seven parts, which were listed
with their full titles and authors (Table 1). The titles and authors of the first seven parts listed in Sclater (1881: 606)
are identical with the titles and authors of these parts as given in Table 1 (i.e., when they were published as part of
the first and second volumes).
We treat the specimen copies discussed in Sclater (1881: 606) in the same way as separates distributed in
advance. Article 21.8 of the International Code on Zoological Nomenclature (hereafter the Code, ICZN 1999: 23)
states that before 2000, “distributed separates in advance of the specified date of publication of the work in which
the material is published thereby advanced the date of publication”. The first seven parts of the Zoology of H.M.S.
Challenger were thus published before 31 August 1880.
A consequence of these specimen copies is that the seventh part (H.N. Moseley’s work on corals which was
published in the second volume; Table 1) has its date of publication advanced by a year from its imprint date of
1881. However, the first part (T. Davidson’s work on Brachiopoda) was “printed and privately distributed among
official and scientific persons” before 31 January 1880 (as noted in The Athenaeum, no. 2727: 157; Table 1), and is
not affected by the notice of these specimen copies.
Parts without accurate dates
The 12 parts of the Zoology of H.M.S. Challenger without accurate dates of publication are in five volumes (6, 8,
11, 17, 29) for which no notice in the same year as the imprint year could be located in this study (Table 1). The
prefaces of four of these volumes (8, 11, 17, 29) are dated after 4 December of the imprint year (the preface of vol.
6 is not dated). The prefaces to volumes 8 and 11 are dated 28 December 1883 and 30 December 1884,
respectively.
There is a possibility that these parts were published later than their imprint dates. For example, the records of
the Worshipful Company of Stationer’s for 1884 list the first deposit by the publisher Longmans of volume 8 of the
Challenger Reports as 5 March 1884 although Longmans had previous deposits of books there that year of 15
January and 9 February and deposited books there regularly each month. However, in the absence of unambiguous
evidence of delayed publication, the date to be adopted is the date specified (i.e. the imprint date) (Article 21.2 of
the Code, ICZN 1999: 22). In Table 1, the date adopted for these parts is “[31 Dec+]”, the last day of the year
specified (Article 21.3 of the Code, ICZN 1999: 22), with an additional indication (“+”) that the date might prove
to be later.

a
Parts and volumes of the Zoology reports unless otherwise indicated.
b
Date when a part or volume was first noticed in corresponding reference listed in the next column. A “<” before the date
indicates that the corresponding part must have been published before the date when it was first noticed and represents a
‘not-after’ date. For parts where no notice of publication has been found, there is a possibility that these parts were
published later than their imprint dates (see discussion in text), but in absence of unambiguous evidence of delayed
publication, the date to be adopted is the date specified (i.e. the imprint date) (Article 21.2 of the Code, ICZN 1999: 22).
The date adopted for these parts is “[31 Dec+]”, the last day of the year specified (Article 21.3 of the Code, ICZN 1999:
22), with an indication that the date might be even later (i.e. “+”).
c
Reference to the notice used to provide the corresponding date for each part as listed in the previous column. See Appendix for
explanation of shortened titles or abbreviations.
d
Narrative volumes. Though not part of the Zoology results, these volumes contain valid indications of new taxon names that
may antedate their indications in the Zoology parts (see Froglia & Clark 2011).
e
The authorship of many sections of this work are not attributed but the title-page states: “Prepared under the superintendence
of the late Sir C. Wyville Thomson … and now of John Murray ...”.
f
Year of publication advanced from 1881 (imprint) to 31 August 1880.
g
Part 8 is comprised of 11 separate previously published articles by P.L. Sclater and other authors and a two-part appendix;
many of these articles were stated as being “[r]eprinted from the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London … [w]ith
corrections and additions by P.L. Sclater, F.R.S.”.
h
Footnote on page 1 states: “It has been found impracticable to incorporate in this Report publications on the Echinoidea which
have appeared during the winter of 1879–80 and subsequently”.
i
Comprised of two parts: one part of text, one part of plates.
j
Comprised of three parts: two parts of text, one part of plates.
k
Part 42 contains two appendices. Appendix A (pp. 677–681), an untitled list of addenda; Appendix B (pp. 681–690) entitled:
“Report on the Caecidae collected by H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873–76” by L. de Folin.
l
Part 52 contains two appendices. Appendix A (pp. 919–926, pls. 149, 150) entitled: “Description of Sylon challengeri, n. sp., a
parasitic cirriped” by P.P.C. Hoek; Appendix B (p. 927) which is a list of addenda.
m
An unnumbered postscript after page 513 states: “Balanites, Polyrhabdus and Polylophus are preoccupied as generic names. I
propose, therefore, to substitute Balanella for Balanites, Pleorhabdus for Polyrhabdus and Lophocalyx for Polylophus”.
n
Part 62 contains an untitled appendix (pp. 39–47, figs. 1–7) by S.F. Harmer.
o
Part 68 contains an appendix (pp. 139–234) entitled: “The myology of the Pinnipedia” by W.C.S. Miller.
p
Published as an appendix in first part of the two-part volume entitled: A Summary of the Scientific Results.
