Intended Multiple Interpretations

In this article, we explain the new concept of intended multiple interpretations (IMI) using single sentences in English. IMI can be said to be in effect when all of the reasonable and (usually equally likely) interpretations of the sentence are, in fact, intended by the writer or speaker within the particular context. Even though relatively rare, they do occur; usually unintended. Besides being ... [Show full abstract] a linguistic curiosity, such sentences can be exploited to make language more economical by minimizing the number of words, i.e. by using one sentence instead of two or more. An additional advantage is the reduction or removal of ambiguity by making it clear – using a proposed IMI symbol at the end of the sentence – that more than one interpretation is indeed intended. Sentences of this kind take advantage of the amazing semantic capabilities of the human brain (to establish the proper context). However, they do rely on a reasonably strong command of the language in order to be effective and useful.

When biochemists use abbreviations such as this title, the mean-ing is usually discoverable by contemplation (as opposed to the meaning of abbreviations in molecular biology). ‘Retro’ means the reverse and it is occasionally used exchangeably with ‘inverto’, and both refer to the direction into which the amino acid backbone is pointing. Peptides are always written with the amino group on the left ... [Show full abstract] side and the carboxyl group on the right side, and each single amino acid is incorporated into this peptide in the same direction. The retro- or inverto peptide has each amino acid remaining in the same spot relative to the others, but flipped, so that the carboxyl group now points to the left. Thus, the inverto of Leu→Ala→Gly→Ile would be Leu←Ala←Gly←Ile where the arrows point from the amino terminus to the carboxyl terminus. Using the same example and the conventional way of writing the peptide sequence from the N to the C terminus the retro-form of the original peptide Leu-Ala-Gly-Ile would be Ile-Gly-Ala-Leu. Figure 15.1 explains the concept. The reader will notice that ‘retro’ does not refer to a natural property of a peptide but rather to one sequence relative to another, i.e., there is no retro peptide without the reference peptide to which it is ‘retro’.

Semantically, they differ in that the subject of unaccusative verbs, unlike the subject of unergatives, does not actively initiate or is not actively responsible for the action of the verb, but bears the semantic role of theme or patient, that is usually associated with the object. Syntactically, the single argument of unaccusatives is a direct object, while in unergatives it is the subject. This investigation examined the influence of context on the interpretation of denotative and connotative meanings of homographs in right hemisphere brain-damaged (RHBD) and non-brain-damaged (NBD) adults. Subjects were required to choose the meaning of homographs in linguistically unbiased ambiguous sentences and in denotatively and connotatively semantically biased narrative contexts. The NBD ... [Show full abstract] group was significantly more accurate than the RHBD on the sentence and connotative narrative contexts. However, there was not significant difference between groups for the denotative narrative context. There were no significant differences between task contexts for the NBD group. The RHBD group was significantly more accurate on the denotative narrative than the sentence context but displayed no significant difference in performance on the connotative narrative versus sentence contexts. The findings suggest that right hemisphere brain damage may result in a reduced ability to process connotative components of word meaning, that does not appear to be aided by the presence of additional semantically supportive linguistic information.
