Abstract

The problem and the solution. This chapter overviews case study research and proposes a manner in which case study research can contribute to theory building in applied disciplines. Although theory building using case study research has been discussed previously in the literature, there is no clarity as to how case study research can be used to build theory. Moreover, it should not be assumed that there is clarity on the processes of case writing, case studies, or case study research. This chapter presents definitions, purposes, and elements of case study research for the purpose of understanding how case study research can be used to build theory in applied disciplines.

... Fonte: Williamson (1996).

... In addition, polarising the two positions to such an extent implies that a researcher cannot, or should not, mix research methods associated with different paradigmatic views of the world (Onwuegbuzie & Teddlie, 2003). There is a growing number of researchers who believe that not only is a mixed methodology possible, for some complex research problems it is, in fact, desirable (Christie, Rowe, Perry, & Chamard, 2000;Dooley, 2002;Greene & Caracelli, 2003;Knight & Halkett, 2010;Krauss, 2005;Ramsay, 1998;Thurmond, 2001;Williamson, 2006). Trochim (2002) wrote that "all quantitative data is based upon qualitative judgments; and all qualitative data can be described and manipulated numerically", a notion that suggests quantitative/deductive and qualitative/inductive research approaches are merely two sides of the same coin. ...
... It is the characteristic by which research can be judged as valid, reliable, andwhere appropriategeneralisable. Traditionally, there are four possible levels of validity that a researcher may wish to establish (Dooley, 2002;Pandit, 1996;Rowley, 2002): ...
... Conceptual validityis achieved when both the constructs of investigation and any philosophical assumptions made there-of are acknowledged and understood in the context of their study. The paper notes that not all levels of validity are achievable, or necessary, for all research (Dooley, 2002;Rowley, 2002). For example, research that is not trying to establish a relationship between any of the phenomena being studied does not necessarily require internal validity. ...

This paper presents a novel research model-Contextual Constructs Model (CCM) and the theory that underpins it-Contextual Constructs Theory (CCT). First developed as part of a complex project investigating user perceptions of information quality during Web-based information retrieval , the CCM is not a single research method per se, but is a modelled research framework providing an over-arching perspective of scientific inquiry, by which a researcher is able to identify multiple possible methods of study and analysis according to the identified research constructs and their contexts. Central to CCM/CCT is that all research involves the fusion of two key elements: 1) context; and 2) cognitively-driven constructs; and that the co-dependent nature of the relationship between these two research components inform the research process and eventual outcomes. The resulting CCM is one that frames research as a contextual process of phases, in-dentifying the conceptual, philosophical, implementation, and evaluation tasks associated with a research investigation. The value of framing research within a CCM comes from its capacity to frame complex, real world phenomena since its epistemology is a blend of a critical-real world view-where reality can be both constructed and constant; within a systems-science paradigm-where constructs are not reduced to isolated parts, but investigated in terms of multiple co-constructions and the contextual relationships between them
... Case study research can employ various data-collection tools, including interviews and document analysis (Daymon & Holloway, 2010;Dooley, 2002;Tracy, 2019). Qualitative interviewing is referred to as in-depth non-standardized, nondirective, unstructured, and open-ended interviewing (Daymon & Holloway, 2010;Taylor, Bogdan, & DeVault, 2015). ...
... A Construct validity test was conducted to help identify correct measures for the concepts being studied (Yin, 2018). It requires the researchers to select the correct tool for the concepts being studied (Dooley, 2002). An External validity test was conducted to help demonstrate how the findings can be generalized (Yin, 2018). ...
... An External validity test was conducted to help demonstrate how the findings can be generalized (Yin, 2018). The more individuals being interviewed, the more and variable observations can be made, yielding the same results, which enhances external validity (Dooley, 2002). A Reliability test was conducted to ensure that the data collection procedures are repeatable, with the same results (Yin, 2018). ...
... A case study methodology [65] is suitable for multi-perspective analysis, and the methodology is broadly applied to explore "how" and "why" questions in the social sciences. Alternatively, Dooley [66] explained that a case study is suitable for building theory in a new discipline, especially when a researcher wants to establish understanding of a complex issue. ...
... Although the aforementioned studies utilized K-12 and elementary students, they showed that case studies are a vital methodology and the qualitative findings can build a theory through the method of "application, confirmation, or disconfirmation of an already conceptualized and operationalized theory (single or multiple cases)" [66]. This reason supports a global problem [23] with two crises of concern. ...

This study explored how an experiential learning approach can be applied in education for sustainable development (ESD) for 2030 within the service industry. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted lives, health, the economy, and service industries, such as tourism and hospitality. ESD for 2030 proposed a framework of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) on how to learn from societal transformation. A case study from the Meiho University examined key influencing factors via students’ practices. Photographic evidence showed how internal psychology affects external behavior. Student groups participated in the proposed learning activities. Students from the tourism department imitated tourists to identify aspects pertaining to independent travel. This entailed broadly experienced activities in rural communities to modern cities. Responsible behavior was identified within self-learning topics, such as water problems, activation, low-carbon transportation, and ecological difficulties experienced on a small island. The results indicate that societal transformation involves an intrinsic mechanism from psychology inside to behavior outside. The planning required for independent travel tested students’ management competence of how a practical project can be controlled under limited budgets and COVID-19 risks. The social and cultural contexts become an interaction and exchange platform for authentic experiences, which resulted in personal learning outcomes. This newly developed mode explains why transforming society is necessary for ESD for 2030 to be implemented in higher education. SDGs are achievable in current circumstances, although learning contexts may differ.
... The core of this approach is an inductive process of building a conceptual framework from the case study. In social sciences, there is a long history of building conceptual frameworks and theories using case studies; academics have emphasized the value and strengths of this approach [45][46][47]. A case study typically involves observing a specific phenomenon to deeply understand it, which may lead researchers to form a theory based on their observations [31,46]. ...
... A case study typically involves observing a specific phenomenon to deeply understand it, which may lead researchers to form a theory based on their observations [31,46]. However, existing studies have also shown that there is no widely accepted process for building a theory from case studies [47]. Considering the theory-building processes that have been described in existing studies, we conducted a case study based on four phases: case selection, data collection, data analysis, and constructing the final theory of hyper-coopetition. ...

In this study, we proposed the concept of hyper-coopetition based on an investigation of the inter-organizational relationships of chipmakers. Hyper-coopetition is distinguished from traditional coopetition by having companies in heterogeneous industries as participants, whereas traditional coopetition is a relationship between competitors in the same industry. To investigate antecedents and processes of hyper-coopetition, we established the conceptual framework of hyper-coopetition through a literature review. We conducted a case study on leading chipmakers, including Intel, Samsung, and Nvidia, to investigate antecedents and processes of the chipmakers’ hyper-coopetition. By examining hyper-coopetition, we contributed to the relevant academic field by introducing hyper-coopetition, its typology, and a new research agenda. The analysis result also brought managerial implications for companies in a rapidly changing environment.
... These types of studies provide us the illustrations in the practice of medicine and may contribute to the acquisition of additional knowledge in the literature by creating the new research questions. The studies that furnish the in-depth analyses or experiential inquiries of a person or group in their real-world setting are the case studies and these are also known as the qualitative research methods that focuses on the contextual analysis of several events or conditions and their relationships [1] . While case reports provide the clues regarding the emerging epidemics and the recognition of previously unrecognized syndromes for the senior physicians, for novice investigators, it serves as a starting point that encourages and prepares them to seek more contextual writing experiences for future research investigations [2] . ...

Background: With an incidence of 3%-5% in the general population and up to 20% in people with diabetes, peak incidence of frozen shoulder is more common in women and in manual workers between the age of 40 and 60yrs. Though multiple interventions have been studied on the frozen shoulder, the complete and the effective treatment is indefinite. Nasya karma is one among the panchakarma therapies of Ayurvedic system of medicine which can deliver the potential effects to the patients of frozen shoulder or apabahuka. Purpose: The objective of this study was to review the case reports and case series that are published on nasya karma and apabahuka or frozen shoulder. Design: Systematic review. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane (CENTRAL), EMBASE, Google Scholar, TKDL, AYUSH and DHARA databases were screened from inception until March 8 th , 2020. References of the full text articles were screened and selected articles by searching manually as a next step. Based on the pre-specified inclusion criteria articles were screened and finally 5 case reports and 0 case series were included for the study. Results: All the 5 studies included in the review administered nasya karma to the patients suffering from apabahuka or frozen shoulder and assessed pain, severity of the pain, VAS (visual analogue scale), stiffness, ROM (Range of movements) like flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation and external rotation, forward elevation, lateral elevation, restricted movements and constant assessment scale of shoulder joint before and after the treatment which showed significant improvement in all the parameters. Conclusions: Nasya karma, one of the panchakarma therapies in Ayurvedic system of medicine constitutes the prime modality of treatment in the management of jatru-urdhwagata rogas mainly apabahuka or the frozen shoulder. Though present review showed significant changes in all the parameters, there are several limitations besides the quality of reporting, that is generally low in the included case reports. In addition, this review provides a comprehensive knowledge that may assist the researcher as a supplementary by giving an intuition for the execution of RCT's and clinical studies further on the domain studied. Having negligible number of systematic reviews in Ayurveda and absence of systematic reviews on case studies or reports and series, this review may serve as a preliminary step towards conducting more systematic reviews in Ayurvedic system of medicine which is the need of hour..
... However, although the reporting of findings based on a single case study has enabled our construction of a rich cultural description of EngCo, it is of course limited in terms of its empirical generalizability. However, such cases can facilitate theoretical generalisations (Davies, 1999;Dooley, 2002). Consequently, we suggest that the reflections we have provided about a single firm might be usefully developed in the design of further 19 work including surveys and meta-case study analysis (Hoon, 2013). ...

In this article we demonstrate the value of studying organisational contexts, which are characterised by uncertainty, via the micro discourse approach to research. By adopting the approach, we study a business to business case of internationalisation via the mixed channels of a physical office in the new territory supported by the parent company's domestic website. We describe and problematise some of the foundational theories that have been applied through survey research in the macro level study of such phenomena. We then show how the micro discourse approach can help to develop rich insights into specific situated contexts where local uncertainty impinges on management decisions. The findings, which are grounded in a period of ethnography at the firm in question and developed through a thematic analysis, show how management dilemmas might develop in local contexts. The value of the work lies in the thick description of a firm's culture which might inform practice and further study.
... For this analysis, we focused on Hawthorne District because they reported the highest number of connections to external partners, which provided us with an opportunity to study our phenomena of interest: partnership coordination. An in-depth analysis of one case-in this instance, the Math Works partnership-can support theory building on complex, little understood phenomena such as partnership coordination and change, that can then be further developed and tested in future work (Dooley, 2002;Siggelkow, 2007). ...

District central offices are increasingly partnering with external organizations, such as professional development providers, to facilitate instructional improvement. Given the highly interdependent nature of partnership work, partners often need to coordinate their work together. We define coordination as how partners align different actions so that actions work in concert to support shared tasks. Despite the importance of coordination, existing research says little about how partners coordinate their work together and the implications for their change efforts. Drawing on theory on organizational routines, we conducted a case study of a district central office partnership using interviews, observations, and an artifact analysis. We found that partners aimed to coordinate their routinized work together through two key mechanisms: connections between routines and opportunities for collective reflection. How these coordination mechanisms interacted mattered for whether partners enacted coordinated change. We close with implications for research and practice. Our work sheds light into how and when partners can work in concert with each other—rather than operating at odds—during change efforts.
... Empirical research can be defined as research where conclusions are drawn from concretely verifiable evidence (Swanson & Chermack, 2013). This type is divided into experiments (i.e., the controlled collection of data in which independent variables are manipulated to examine the effect on dependent variables (Swanson & Chermack, 2013)), field studies (i.e., the practical application of the research subject matter (Lynham, 2002)), interviews (i.e., the controlled collection of data based on set of open-ended questions (Döringer, 2020)) and surveys (the controlled collection of data grounded in a predetermined set of closed questions (Dooley, 2002). Field studies as part of empirical research were mentioned in 27 articles, followed by surveys (17 articles), interviews (12 articles), and 3 experiments. ...

Digitalisation affects management control (MC). It leads to changes in the way MC activities are organised, performed and analysed. Companies of all industries, locations and sizes have to adapt their MC to digital circumstances, starting with the understanding and delimitation of MC tasks, through the modified application of MC instruments and the consideration of behavioural aspects of MC, to the organisation of the MC function within the company. This paper presents a systematic review of the literature according to Tranfield et al. (Br J Manag 14:207–222, 2003), focusing on the impact of digitalisation on MC. A comprehensive overview of scientific literature is provided by reviewing 166 highly rated accounting journals (based on multiple international journal ratings) and analysing 116 articles from January 2000 to August 2022. Based on the MC framework developed by Guenther (J Manag Control 23:269–290, 2013), the identified studies are categorised into the following research dimensions: tasks, instruments, organisation and behavioural aspects. Multiple studies highlight the continuous development of the MC function under the impact of digitalisation, including the extension of MC tasks, the adaptation of existing MC instruments and creation of new MC instruments, positive and negative behavioural aspects of digitalisation on MC and the establishment of new MC organisation models. In addition to the qualitative content analysis, this literature review also includes an analysis of the methods applied and illustrates their changes over time. This study reveals research gaps in relation to the current MC research and presents potential starting points for future research.
... On the other hand, they may have little time to spend with a researcher during busy summer months when their target is to do as much business as possible. Hence, my research involved accepting invitations to join participants during their work days and meant it was difficult to organise only short stays on islands (Dooley, 2002). September and October were ideal months to conduct interviews because I could still find that most locals and tourists were still visiting the islands, but as their numbers started to drop, operators and service providers relevant to the study felt less pressured and were more available. ...

This study presents lessons learned from the application of mixed methods during three field visits to central Mediterranean islands over an eight-year period to learn about and from visitors who voluntarily paid to experience ecotourism. The study outlines various challenges encountered in research in small island settings. Such challenges include logistical difficulties to reach islands, including those originating from weather conditions, difficulty in practising observation in small communities, sampling dilemmas, different levels of trust and willingness to disclose views among interview participants, lack of standardised data, language barriers that may limit who conducts research on specific islands, and substantial fluctuations in population size throughout the year. Findings show that the choice and application of methods for island research need to be informed by island dynamics; this entails adapting methods and using different data collection techniques to mitigate challenges arising from island settings. The study also outlines the need of more research in the application of mixed methods when studying islands.

This article aims to look into the macro and micro cultural dimensions from the perspective of “Translanguaging Space”, based on the artistic installation, “Square Word Calligraphy Classroom”, that refers to the creative visual writing, “Square Word Calligraphy”, invented by Chinese artist Xu Bing (1996). Using a descriptive and interpretive methodology, we collected personal comments and artistic pieces recreated by three participants who have experienced in the contextualized exhibition, “The Language and Art of Xubing” in Macau. We analyzed how the ideology of “translanguaging” influenced the individual's locus of psychology and how an interculturality was established in the literary, artistic and visual intersection of Chinese characters and alphabetic letters. We concluded that the concept of "translanguaging space" reconstructs our view towards language, in macroculture, it dynamically creates a vehicle for universal understanding, at the micro level of culture, it stimulates underlying pedagogical possibility through individual creativity and criticality.
... In the second stage, we applied the propositions of the study to a case study illustrative of the business model of eco-innovation, following a design supported by a single holistic case study (Villareal and Landeta, 2010) that was previously applied in the fields of strategic management and open innovation (Calvo and Villarreal, 2018a;Chesbrough et al., 2014;Dodgson et al., 2006;Matricano et al., 2019;Villarreal and Calvo, 2015;Wilson and Vlosky, 1997). The design follows the most relevant contributions to this methodology (Dooley, 2002;Eisenhardt, 1989;Maxwell, 1996;Miles and Huberman, 1994;Yin, 2009Yin, , 2011 and assumes the instrumental role of the case study in facilitating the readers' understanding of the theoretical interrelations through an in-depth study of a particular situation (Stake, 1995). Hence, we proposed a sustainable business model archetype that can support the internationalization of eco-innovation. ...

In a scenario of growing demand for energy, technology applications that monitor industrial companies' energy consumption will support the integration of the value chain of suppliers, companies, and clients in a process of eco-innovation. We relate the drivers of eco-innovation to the key factors of internationalization of business models based on supporting industrial companies' energy efficiency. From a dynamic perspective, this study allows us to highlight that an entrepreneur's preestablished personal network, the lack of opportunities in domestic markets, and the fast-changing environment complicate the international growth pattern of eco-innovations.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a teaching method that appeared in the early 1960s and is widely applied in distinct areas nowadays. In the presented manuscript, we describe a PBL methodology use restricted to applied mathematics for problem solving among a group of engineering students in a Portuguese university. In the pandemic context, it was a huge challenge both for the students and for the teacher. Supported by the available literature, the experiment was defined. As it is well known, teachers are not only knowledge transmitters but also designers of teaching initiatives. Thus, teachers and students both have a large role in PBL methodologies, where collaboration, reflection and concepts discussion are essential. In the presented pedagogical challenge, students were devoted to integrating the previous knowledge acquired and the one acquired during the project. This process improved their new competences—both personal and team work. Despite being a recent pedagogical method, PBL is revealed to be an important teaching tool.

Food systems are both contributing to and affected by environmental degradation and climate change. The transition towards resilient and sustainable food systems is essential to ensure food security and minimise negative environmental impacts. Innovative technologies can accelerate this transition. Blockchain technology (BCT) is attracting attention as it can deliver transparency to complex global food supply chains and has the potential to guide current food production towards better sustainability and efficiency. This case study investigated the opportunities that BCT can offer to food supply chains. Qualitative interviews with eight main BCT providers were conducted to evaluate the current state of BCT and put it into perspective by mapping out advantages, disadvantages, incentives, motives, and expectations connected to its implementation in global food systems. A thematic analysis showed that, while BCT was considered beneficial by all interviewees, uptake is slow due to high implementation costs and the lack of incentives for companies throughout the food chain from farms to food industry and retail. Results further revealed that the advantages of BCT go beyond communication of trustworthy information and development of closer producer–consumer relationships. In fact, it can provide the opportunity to decrease food waste, enhance working conditions throughout the supply chain, and promote sustainable consumption habits. As BCT may be increasingly used in the food supply chain, the results give a basis for future research that may leverage both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine actors’ behaviours. Also, the importance of improving user experiences through functional applications and software to facilitate the adoption of the technology is stressed.
... A Case Study Research (CSR) is a method whose defining features are: i) empirical study of contemporary situations in a natural setting; ii) a focus on asking "how" and "why" questions; and iii) the treatment of each case as an experiment in which the behaviors cannot be manipulated (Myers, 2009;Yin, 2009). In CSR, data collection can be accomplished using quantitative or qualitative methods (Dooley, 2002;Yin, 2009). Case studies an iterative process employing a variety of data collection methods to compare within and across cases to research validity (Duxbury, 2012). ...

In the past twenty years continuous change has transformed the face of rural Greece. The Euro- pean agricultural and rural development policies, other international developments, as well as the recent economic crisis have accelerated past and created new rural transformation processes. ‘De-agriculturalisation’ and rural restructuring have been accompanied by ‘rurbanization’ and socio-economic integration of rural population. These interrelated processes have internally transformed the rural areas, forming a ‘new rurality’ characterised by contraction of agriculture, expansion of tourism and construction, increased pluriactivity, increased employment of inter- national migrant labour and the reorganisation of farm operation and family labour division. In the environment of crisis, rural areas have been affected in diverse ways. On the one hand, they experience rising costs of production, falling incomes, increasing inequalities, contraction of public services and on the other, lower unemployment rates than urban areas, increased production and exports and a cowardly ‘back to the land’ movement in which agriculture’s role is enhanced. The paper will identify and discuss the main elements and the dynamics of the changing physiognomy of rurality in Greece over the past twenty years. On the basis of evidence provided by available statistical data, it will also investigate the main features of the internal and external to rural areas’ mobilities in the context of the recent economic recession.

In line with the case study approach, each study was intended go beyond the common focus on measuring quantitative outcomes that characterizes much evaluation research in order to provide contextualized insights into the underpinning principles and processes that were contributing to the success of these noteworthy cases (Dooley, 2002;Gibbert, Ruigrok, & Wicki, 2008;Yin, 1982). The cases were identified by the research team via a regional selection process facilitated by ARNEC and based on a pre-determined set of criteria that emphasized representation of early childhood programs operating in under-represented communities. ...

A global goal for early childhood education and care is to ensure universal, “quality” provision that reaches all children. Achieving this goal requires a well-prepared workforce that is equipped to adapt to and deliver early childhood programs across the vastly diverse contexts and communities where children are growing up around the world. Yet currently there is a severe shortage of early childhood workers, particularly in “low resource” and complex communities. Evidence to support appropriate training for such workers is also lacking. In response, this paper presents findings from a case study of a large-scale training program for community-based early childhood workers in central-east India. A total of 650 community-based Village Communicators were trained to deliver a responsive caregiving package to parents of young children. Data collected over 3 months highlight how the unique contextually grounded, caring and reflexive approach to training resulted in profound personal and professional change among training participants. The findings are of significance in informing policy and practice associated with global goals for early childhood. First, they challenge the technical, programmatic approaches to training that are commonly adopted for preparing this workforce. Second, they evidence the potentially transformative, long-term impact of person-centered approaches to training that facilitate knowledge-sharing to understand local needs and attitudes. Third, they provide insight into ways in which training programs can support enhanced local relevance and effectiveness of early childhood services implemented for children and families across diverse contexts.
... The SC focus of the study lies in the analysis of the impact of sustainability and resilience practices on the entire SC. For this reason, the interviewees were the firms' SC managers, who were selected to provide insights on the impacts of the practices on the SC (Dooley 2002). After searching the international Orbis database, six firms have been selected as particularly representative of the Italian industrial setting (Voss, Tsikriktsis, and Frohlich 2002). ...

Implementing practices aiming at both sustainable and resilient supply chains is a nascent but still poorly addressed research area. This study aims at exploring how to develop sustainable and resilient supply chain practices, advancing knowledge on synergies and trade-offs that can be expected. Empirical evidence from six firms has been collected by means of semi-structured interviews. The preliminary results obtained show that sustainability practices are more explicitly implemented by firms, while resilience practices are sometimes neglected. Various degrees of synergies and trade-offs are highlighted: besides being the most widely implemented practices, green logistics, certifications, and eco-design practices can be considered both sustainable and resilient. The implications of this study may be important to expand knowledge on what is regarded as both sustainable and resilient, and it supports organizations throughout their supply chains in the implementation of practices.
... In the end, four interview invitations were accepted. According to Dooley (2002), in-depth interview tends to be small to support the depth of analysis. 3-Dimensional Printing (3DP) has been widely used in the circular supply chain. Still, most of the literature focused on addressing only the manufacturer's adoption of 3DP and how it influences the supply chain. A growing number of non-manufacturer (e.g., logistic suppliers) have adopted 3DP, but its impact on manufacturers and customers is still underexplored. This paper uses a two-player single-period supply chain model, supported by an in-depth interview, to investigate how the logistics supplier's 3DP adoption impacts the circular supply chain in the spare parts aftersales market. The findings show that cost reduction of 3DP does not always benefit the logistics supplier. Still, this finding opens a new revenue stream for the logistics supplier and the integrated supply chain. Further, the manufacturer can financially benefit from such adoption only when the cost of 3DP production is relatively high. Interestingly, the logistics supplier can use 3DP adoption as a game-changer to become a new "green manufacturer", thereby posing a strategic threat that can influence the traditional manufacturer's decisions regarding financial benefits. Customers can also enjoy more surplus when logistics suppliers adopt low-cost 3DP. This study is one of the first to investigate how non-manufacturer 3DP adoption impacts the circular supply chain.
... This research has been conducted as a case study, which is an appropriate method for conducting qualitative, applied "in-depth" research of a phenomenon or process in a real-world context (Gerring, 2014;Yin, 2018). In a case study, the researcher aims to understand a phenomenon by observing variables and their interacting relationships (Dooley, 2002). Such a strategy and methodology provide tools to study and understand complex phenomena that are not easily separable from their contexts (Dresch et al., 2015;Yin, 2014). ...

One proposed solution to the sustainability crisis is to pursue a circular economy, which is a regenerative economic system that aims to design out waste while keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible. This dissertation focuses on the adoption of a circular economy in European regional-level strategies. It strives to discover how regional strategies can support society to promote a sustainable future approach, in this case, in the form of the circular economy. The research explores to what extent the circular economy is present in European regional strategies and how the circular economy is implemented in the framework of smart specialisation, and finally, it presents a regional circular economy strategy process from the Päijät-Häme region in Finland. The thesis consists of four substudies. A qualitative research approach is utilised in the dissertation involving a qualitative survey in six European regions, semistructured interviews with 12 regions and a case study of one regional process. Regions play a central role in the pursuit of circularity. For a successful transition, the implementation of regional strategies is in a key position. In this process, support on both the international and national levels is crucial. However, the perception of the circular economy needs to be broadened, moving beyond waste management and recycling towards a holistic and systemic understanding. The importance of a bottom-up approach in strategy processes is recognised and utilised in the regions, yet diversification needs to be supported. Combining the circular economy and smart specialisation goals can help support the sustainability transition. However, concretising priorities and roadmaps into organised action plans is still in the development phase, even if separate circular actions occur. In particular, the monitoring and evaluation of strategies needs more attention. The regions have started the transition towards the circular economy. There is a need for developing the understanding of sustainability, strengthening stakeholder involvement, coordinating actions and monitoring goals and activities in order for regional strategies to support the transition. Innovative thinking can help regional actors find synergies in the strategy processes. The regional authorities responsible for development strategies are in a crucial position in supporting the development. Concrete activities and changes in perception are necessary on all levels, both in policy and practice, research and business, and above all, in the minds of citizens.

Historically, any endeavors, involving the term ‘space’, were perceived as operations undertaken by large government organizations with an emphasis on the scientific aspect, rather than a business one. However, over the last two decades, the structure of the space industry is rapidly being transformed and privatized due to the growth in commercial applications and the catalyzing entry of billionaires such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. This paper offers a case study analysis of the private sector’s growing influence in the space industry through a combination of a quantitative analysis and an in-depth review of the surrounding literature. The results show that the commercial economy now accounts for almost 80% of the monetary size of the space industry and is expected to drive most of the growth in future. Further, a forecast of the future size of the space economy suggests it could touch almost US$1.5 trillion by 2040, dominated by the private sector. A regression analysis conducted to assess the quantum of private sector investment that will be required if the industry is to achieve its forecasted potential in the upcoming decades revealed that private investments must go up to US$48billion by 2025.

This chapter reviews paradoxical Chinese government leadership when handling the COVID-19 crisis in the first 30 days following the block-down of the Wuhan City. Coping with the COVID-19 pandemic remains a considerable challenge worldwide. Executing definitive procedures and methods in the face of paradoxical decisions will help all countries fight the battle more effectively. It is for this reason that the authors examine how Chinese government leaders managed the paradoxical situations during the national fight against the pandemic crisis. Using a case study approach and analyzing 3604 news items released by the Chinese official media, the authors identified three types of paradoxes China faced: the need for a timely and accurate release of information, the need for central government control and local contextualized implementation, along with the need for effective pandemic prevention and resumption of production. The authors also identified major paradox-coping strategies used by the top government leaders. The objective is not to promote the Chinese government or their response but to provide useful insights for government leaders of other countries in their fight against COVID-19 and future outbreaks of crises.

AI-based technology in our everyday lives is an emerging issue in business research with a lot of potential for businesses and users. However, there is a lack of frameworks that enable UX designers and product developers to create AI-based products with elements of appearance that induce desired emotions and institute effective human-machine communication. Drawing on the AI archetype concept, this research advances a four-stage personality-grounded framework for forming the specific AI-based product appearance with six dimensions that evoke specific emotions incorporating the stakeholders’ input. The framework application is illustrated using a single classical case study of the rescue and accident robot. The profile of an AI-based rescue robot that elicits trust and is recognized by human unconsciousness is generated through in-depth interviews with United Arab Emirates citizens. The application of the proposed personality-grounded framework can be extended not only to robots helping in different contexts in airports, police stations, and response centers but to broader categories of AI-based products.

Purpose There are uncertainties concerning how innovators can successfully venture into disruptive innovations and how incumbents can react to the emergence of such innovations. Disruptive digital innovations, which use information technology to disrupt business contexts and can evolve rapidly to either successes or failures, have unique challenges. The literature has largely remained silent concerning these. Also, existing studies often focus on innovations originating in developed economies and just on successful cases. There is a lack of comparative focus on successful and failure cases emerging across economies. The purpose of this paper is to fill these gaps. Design/methodology/approach This paper assesses the evolution of disruptive digital innovations in various contexts through a financial management-motivated conceptual framework. Contrary to existing works, this paper focuses on both successful and failure cases and regards the influence of various stakeholders further to innovators and incumbents to explain the successes or failures of the innovation. Findings There are some common success factors for disruptive digital innovation. These include an inherent focus on social value, alignment to financiers' interests and rivals' actions and strategic collaborations to create a synergy effect. Research limitations/implications Innovators can cause effective digital disruption by focusing on social and financial values. Success can also largely depend on strategic partnerships rather than actions by an individual entity. Thus, venturing and managing disruptive digital innovation is not an isolated but a social process. Originality/value This paper recommends propositions for innovators and incumbents to venture into and confront disruptive digital innovations effectively. Its originality lies in focusing on both successful and failure cases, unexplored in literature, to develop the propositions.

Entrepreneurship and innovation are priority objectives for development and for increasing economic competitiveness. However, they need a priority intervention and especially directed to activities of a business nature, going beyond the fields of investigation and science. The search for professionals with different skills to overcome the current and foreseen challenges is relevant in the bioproducts sector. Problem-based learning (PBL) is described as an instructional approach, which promotes interdisciplinarity and critical thinking, with the potential to meet current challenges. This article describes a proposal to align the PBL with an innovation program and contest, to be integrated into a master’s degree in science and technology in bioproducts (MDSTBio) to promote academic entrepreneurship. The alignment of the PBL with the program and contest could allow the development of innovative products with a view to solving problems faced by the bioproducts sector. The PBL strategy could allow students to mobilize knowledge from several curricular units of MDSTBio for the development of different deliverables to participate in the innovation programs and contests. This way, it could be possible to promote innovation in the bioproducts sector, stimulating the entrepreneurial spirit among higher education students, and understand its potential for replication and mobilization of skills acquired in different bioproducts courses.

In this text, we seek to discuss issues on a topic a little debated in Applied Linguistics - the emotions of black English teachers. Since the advent of the affective turn, studies on identity and emotions have increased exponentially, both in Brazil and abroad (ARAGÃO; BARCELOS, 2018BARCELOS, A. M. F.; ARAGÃO, R. Emotions in language teaching: a review of studies on teacher emotions in Brazil. Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics, v. 41, n. 4, p. 506-531, 2018). However, there is still a lot to investigate regarding studies between emotions, power relations, and race (AHMED, 2004AHMED, S. The cultural politics of emotion. New York: Routledge, 2004., ²⁰⁰⁹AHMED, S. Embodying diversity: Problems and paradoxes for Black feminists. Race Ethnicity and Education, v. 12, n. 1, p. 41-52, 2009.; BOLER; ZEMBYLAS, 2003ZEMBYLAS, M. Emotions and teacher identity: a poststructural perspective. Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice, v. 9, n. 3, p. 213-238, 2003.). In this sense, this work aims to investigate how the emotions of black English teachers are racialized in different contexts. Therefore, in this case study semi-structured interviews were used and the narratives of three black teachers were analyzed. We conclude that the emotions of these teachers are discursively constituted, influenced by the colonial heritage, producing emotional labor. KEYWORDS: Emotions; Race; English

Brand Concept Mapping (BCM) is a mind-mapping method researchers use to explore brand association and brand image but applications of BCM are rare in tourism research. The aim of the study is to assess usefulness of BCM for developing destination brand association networks and destination brand image in a domestic (Bolu in Turkiye) and an international (Bali in Indonesia) tourism destination. Destination brand associations are generated through interviewing 40 participants, and two destination BCMs are developed through aggregating individual BCMs from 250 respondents. The findings of the study suggest that BCM is effective for determining the most salient destination brand features and destination brand association networks. The study recommends both destinations to broaden their appeal to a wider range of tourist segments; the domestic tourism destination to target international travelers who are interested in skiing, wellness and sports, and the international tourism destination to target older tourists based on its shopping and beach elements.

Purpose This study aims to examine how case study research has been applied in the field of human resource development (HRD). Design/methodology/approach The authors examined HRD case study research by analyzing 118 refereed, empirical case study articles published between 2000 and 2020 in three Academy of HRD-sponsored journals. Findings Findings suggest that case studies have an established place in HRD research. The disciplinary convention has been exploratory case studies, which, to a greater extent, draw on single-case research designs. When examining the proportion of case study articles in relation to all empirical, peer-refereed publications in the journals, the authors found a slight decline in case study research publications in recent years. The results of our post hoc exploratory analysis indicate that HRD case study research that contributes to theory development by eliciting concepts and their relationships is likely to receive more scholarly attention than case studies that provide rich descriptions of the phenomenon. The results also suggest that it is rather case study’s contribution to theory than selected features of case study that attracts scholars’ attention. Originality/value The study identified several approaches to conducting case study research that have received less attention by HRD researchers. The authors encourage HRD researchers to expand their repertoire of case study approaches. The authors also provide recommendations addressing the issues of methodological self-awareness, rigor and transparency in case study research.

Purpose Most studies in electronic government (e-government) sustainability focus on the role of specific actors (stakeholders such as government employees or citizens) in sustaining an e-government project. However, such actors may not have sufficient resources to support e-government sustainability by themselves and must collaborate across different departments and stakeholders to sustain e-government projects. This paper aims to take a social systems theory perspective on sustainable local e-government, where actors cooperate and coordinate in a social system to leverage resources for e-government sustainability in local government contexts in developing countries. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an interpretive study of two local e-government case studies based on in-depth interviews with local government information technology (IT) managers, local leaders and staff. Data analysis based on constructivist grounded theory is used to understand the role of a social system in sustaining e-government systems in local governments in developing countries. Findings The original social system theory was developed for industry initiatives and adapted for public organisations in this paper. The unique characteristics of the public sector and e-government innovation are used to identify new components of the social system related to local e-government. Local e-government is sustained through a collaboration between actors in a social system to leverage resources and reduce challenges. Research limitations/implications While this is an exploratory study, the cases show that the use of a social system theory consisting of institutional, management, social and economic components requires multiple lenses for investigation. This is a challenging process because it requires different areas of knowledge to carry out the research. The challenges may influence the overall outcome of this study. In addition, the two cases may generate limited insight and experiences as this study was carried out within two local governments in Indonesia. The findings may not provide a strong basis for generalization to other contexts. Practical implications This study offers guidance to local government IT departments to improve collaboration in a social system between local actors (such as political, managers and staff) while implementing and using e-government systems. Social implications Sustainable local e-government requires all actors to coordinate and cooperate in a social system to reduce financial, political and technical challenges. Originality/value This paper offers new insight into how a local government collaborates in a social system to realize sustainable e-government systems. Collaborating in a social system reduces common challenges and leverages resources to support e-government sustainability.

This chapter addresses the peculiarities, characteristics, and major fallacies of single case research designs. A single case study research design is a collective term for an in-depth analysis of a small non-random sample. The focus on this design is on in-depth. This characteristic distinguishes the case study research from other research designs that understand the individual case as a rather insignificant and interchangeable aspect of a population or sample. Also, researchers find relevant information on how to write a single case research design paper and learn about typical methodologies used for this research design. The chapter closes with referring to overlapping and adjacent research designs.

While we agree on the benefits Lean 4.0 may bring to companies performance, we still lack a deep understanding of the characteristics of this paradigm, such as its effective application space. Recalling traditional lean better suits repetitive companies, we are keen to understand whether the anew Lean 4.0 will enlarge its application space. Design/methodology/approach We performed an exploratory study, using a quantitative analysis based on Bayesian network approach to investigate whether Lean 4.0 results to be as effective in repetitive companies as in non-repetitive ones, in terms of operational performance. Findings While our findings confirm that Lean 4.0 will enhance companies' performance regardless their production strategies, companies adopting a repetitive strategy do benefit from a much higher improvement. Our findings provide an insight on the true applicability space of Lean 4.0, which seems to be the same as the traditional lean. Originality/value We contribute to the ongoing debate of Lean 4.0 providing initial empirical evidence on how to improve the operational performance in non-repetitive companies, seeing that Lean 4.0 might not be the best choice in its current format.

This article aims at studying the concrete conditions of integration of an undocumented person living in Bordeaux. It is essentially based on an ethnographic survey, interviews and a budget survey carried out with a recipient of the Secours Populaire support in Bordeaux.

The problem and the solution. One of the challenges of theory-building research in applied disciplines is making the logic used to build the theory explicit and accessible to the user of the developed theory. Although different methods of theory building advocate different theory-building research processes, there is an inherently generic nature to theory building. This chapter acts as a foundation for the journal by highlighting strategies commonly used in building theory and offers a generic, five-phase method of theory-building research.

- This paper describes the process of inducting theory using case studies from specifying the research questions to reaching closure. Some features of the process, such as problem definition and construct validation, are similar to hypothesis-testing research. Others, such as within-case analysis and replication logic, are unique to the inductive, case-oriented process. Overall, the process described here is highly iterative and tightly linked to data. This research approach is especially appropriate in new topic areas. The resultant theory is often novel, testable, and empirically valid. Finally, framebreaking insights, the tests of good theory (e.g., parsimony, logical coherence), and convincing grounding in the evidence are the key criteria for evaluating this type of research.

Theory building and theory-building research are starting to draw increased attention from HRD scholars. There is a growing recognition of the importance of theory building in maturing thought and practice in HRD. This article examines what is meant by good theory and theory-building research in HRD through a synthesis of the existing literature and a discussion of the core concepts, issues, and challenges associated with theory building in an applied field. It also highlights the importance of embracing multiparadigm research perspectives for stepping up to the task of theory building in the HRD profession. © 2000 by Jossey-Bass, A Publishing Unit of John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Most writing on sociological method has been concerned with how accurate facts can be obtained and how theory can thereby be more rigorously tested. In The Discovery of Grounded Theory, Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss address the equally Important enterprise of how the discovery of theory from data--systematically obtained and analyzed in social research--can be furthered. The discovery of theory from data--grounded theory--is a major task confronting sociology, for such a theory fits empirical situations, and is understandable to sociologists and laymen alike. Most important, it provides relevant predictions, explanations, interpretations, and applications. In Part I of the book, "Generation Theory by Comparative Analysis," the authors present a strategy whereby sociologists can facilitate the discovery of grounded theory, both substantive and formal. This strategy involves the systematic choice and study of several comparison groups. In Part II, The Flexible Use of Data," the generation of theory from qualitative, especially documentary, and quantitative data Is considered. In Part III, "Implications of Grounded Theory," Glaser and Strauss examine the credibility of grounded theory. The Discovery of Grounded Theory is directed toward improving social scientists' capacity for generating theory that will be relevant to their research. While aimed primarily at sociologists, it will be useful to anyone Interested In studying social phenomena--political, educational, economic, industrial-- especially If their studies are based on qualitative data.
