Measuring youth’s involvement in violence For half a century now, crime has been measured on the basis of data that are generated at an increasing distance from the penal institutions. This article shows the contribution of public health surveys to knowledge about the relationship of young people with violence : some of these surveys tell us about their participation into violence as perpetrators, but chiefly, they consider types of violence that regular victimisation surveys do not cover and so overestimate victimisation of youths under 25. The reasons for this are explored and related to the specificities of physical violence within this age-group.
