This paper re-examines a letter of Ramón Berenguer IV, Earl of Barcelona, to the Saracens on the banks of the Ebro River in Azcó, Flix, Mora, García and Tivissa, to those in Castello and to those of lord Çalepha. The letter contains the terms of an agreement and a guarantee of their safety. The anomalies of form in the document are analysed with scientific criteria. The execution and ... [Show full abstract] non-execution of the terms of the document in the feud of the barony of Entenza (Tivissa and Mora) are studied. Having consulted the Archives of the Duchy of Medinaceli and having studied the "capbreus" (documents of feudal rights and obligations of serfs and lords) and the Book of Feudal Customs of the 13th and 14th centirues, it has been possible to draw the conclusion that the terms of the document of Ramón Berenguer IV were not respected, copies of the document were not made, and the rents and personal services to be paid by the Saracens in Tivissa and Mora were silenced.

This essay examines the followings of Earls William and Guy Beauchamp and asks to what extent these can be described as 'bastard feudal' affinities in the light of a historiography which has increasingly located the origins of 'bastard feudalism' in the thirteenth century and earlier. It argues that, although the following of Earl William was based to a significant degree on long-standing ... [Show full abstract] tenurial ties, that of his son was similar to late medieval 'bastard feudal' affinities in construction. It asks why this change took place, suggesting that Guy Beauchamp may have had entirely personal reasons for wishing to create such an affinity and increased control over local government, or that this may have reflected a general move by earls in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, a conclusion supported by evidence from some other recent studies. In the latter case, it suggests that this may have been prompted by the prolonged absence of nobles at war in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, and a desire to find ways of protecting landed interests while they were away. Whatever the reasons for this change, Guy Beauchamp's enhanced control over local government in Warwickshire had a stabilising effect in the county.

These books were Erasmo of Rotterdam's De Civilitate Morum Puerilium and The Letters of Lord Chesterfield to His Son, both written in the XVIII century. Finally, this work centres on The Manual of Urbanity and Good Manners of the Venezuelan author Manuel Antonio Carrell, who expressed the ideal of life for the elite of young Spanish American nations. Thus, the final aim of this article is to contrast this book with ciceronian writing.
