In many European countries, building is an economical sector where it is possible to reduce significantly energy dependence and environmental impact. Ambitious objectives are required for 2020 future buildings: extremely low energy consumption, low carbon emission, etc. To reach these new goals, the existing design of buildings has to change.Buildings are complex systems occupied by humans interacting with their environment. Indeed, each building can be considered a unique set of elements in dynamic interaction, structured and goal-oriented. New drastic energy objectives increase the complexity of building systems. Levels of energy and environmental performance, never reached in the past, are required for future buildings.In this context, it appears that professional capabilities and existing practices are no longer adequate. The actors of the building sector have to face up to a growing complexity generated by new constraints. Usual theories and practices are under questionning.The aim of this paper is to provide an original and helpful approach to this new complexity of future buildings. This approach, based on concepts of complexity and transdisciplinarity, consists in a combination of structural, functional and transformation approaches, thus providing a tridimensional cognitive framework to plan future buildings in a dynamic way.

Energy is inevitable for human life and a secure and accessible supply of energy is crucial for the sustainability of modern societies. Continuation of the use of fossil fuels is set to face multiple challenges: depletion of fossil fuel reserves, global warming and other environmental concerns, geopolitical and military conflicts and of late, continued and significant fuel price rise. These problems indicate an unsustainable situation. Renewable energy is the solution to the growing energy challenges. Renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, biomass, and wave and tidal energy, are abundant, inexhaustible and environmentally friendly.

Hydrogen is the quintessential eco-fuel. This invisible, tasteless gas is the most abundant element in the universe. It is the basic building block and fuel of stars and an essential raw material in innumerable biological and chemical processes. As a completely nonpolluting fuel, it may hold the answer to growing environmental concerns about atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide and the resultant Greenhouse Effect. In this book Peter Hoffmann describes current research toward a hydrogen-based economy. He presents the history of hydrogen energy and discusses the environmental dangers of continued dependence on fossil fuels.Hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier that, like electricity, must be manufactured. Today hydrogen is manufactured by "decarbonizing" fossil fuels. In the future it will be derived from water and solar energy and perhaps from "cleaner" versions of nuclear energy. Because it can be made by a variety of methods, Hoffmann argues, it can be easily adapted by different countries and economies. Hoffmann acknowledges the social, political, and economic difficulties in replacing current energy systems with an entirely new one. Although the process of converting to a hydrogen-based economy would be complex, he demonstrates that the environmental and health benefits would far outweigh the costs.

This article reveals the evolution of the concept of energy security with a particular focus on the challenges of the 21st century and develops the author's concept of the new energy order (NEO). NEO defines the basic premises of energy security within a broad context and aims to respond to the challenges and dilemmas arising from the transition to desired energy mix systems. The article discusses the basic characteristics of the global shift to a complex system of energy mix in which carbon fuels, nuclear energy, renewables (and newly emerging alternatives such as hydrogen) play significant roles. The narrow understanding of energy security (based on amount, price, location, and time) is then transformed to a broader understanding (with environmental and societal concerns) which is argued to be more relevant for the defined challenges. Having elucidated the NEO, the article introduces feasibility, accessibility, sustainability and transparency (FAST) as the global principles which are necessary to attain an equitable and a sustainable new energy order.

This article formulates institutional virtues according to sustainable development (SD) criteria to come up with a paradigmatic set of corporate principles. It aims to answer how a corporation might obtain competitive advantage by combining “going ethical” with “going green.” On the one hand, it brings out facts that indicate a forthcoming trend inclined to force relevant actors to comply with SD requirements. On the other hand, it suggests that SD may be implemented as a strategy to gain competitive advantage by the help of the PEARL model through its five fundaments: (1) perception friendliness, (2) environment friendliness, (3) action, (4) relationship, and (5) locality. This article finally shows that although a number of companies (e.g., Bosch, BP, and GE) implement SD as a tool of differentiation, they lack a holistic model that is fully responsive to current dynamics. The PEARL may be implemented as a proactive positioning to gain competitive advantage because transformation of this model into corporate strategy does not only respond to “stakeholder” claims, but also meets the changing characteristic of “societal demands.”

The collapse of all belief, postulates post-modernism, has produced a profusion of ‘realities’ competing for our attention. The world is nothing but an artificially created and maintained theatre where everything is managed and manipulated. We live in and by simulations and nothing can be verified as ‘real’, true or meaningful. Do these claims of post-modernism stand up to critical scrutiny? What does all this mean for the Other—the non-Western world? Are non-Western ‘realities’ really on sale in the shopping mall of post-modernism? And who does post-modernism actually represent? This essay attempts to answer these questions, and finds common ground between colonialism, modernity and post-modernity, by examining four new books: Reality Isn't What It Used To Be by Walter Truett Anderson;1Uncritical Theory: Postmodernism, Intellectuals and the Gulf War by Christopher Norris;2Dominating Knowledge: Development, Culture and Resistance, edited by F.A. Marglin and S.A. Marglin;3 and Colonising Egypt by Timothy Mitchell.4
