Abstract

A survey reveals four primary reasons why businesses use billboard advertising: visibility, media efficiency, local presence, and tangible response. Insights on the relative importance of these factors are provided by retail-gravity models and selective-perception theory, along with recency planning in media strategy. The study also identifies eight executional factors that are associated with successful billboard advertising: name identification, location of the billboard, readability, clarity of the message, use as a tool of integrated marketing communications (IMC), powerful visuals, clever creative, and information provision. Moderating effects of company size, company type, and level of billboard usage are examined. The results go beyond existing textbook and trade-press discussions to document the factors that make billboards an important promotional tool.

... Billboards have been proven effective by Global Dominion from anecdotal results in late 2022 and 2023. Visibility and media efficiency are the most critical influences on decisions of firms to use billboards in advertising according to Taylor et al., (2006). It is also important to place the billboards close to the point of sale. ...
... Visibility certainly aids in the improvement of brand dominance, one of the variables influencing consumer purchase intention. If they're clear, concise, and attractive, billboards are really effective in various industries and in different geographies (Taylor et al., 2006;Achieng, 2009;Nyarko et al., 2015;Khan et al., 2016;and Gebreselassie & Bougie, 2019), even in the finance world (Sadeh, 2019), and even particularly in the Philippines (Manansala, et al., 2019;Ricafort & Borbon, 2020;and Guioguio et al., 2023). Improved brand knowledge and brand dominance can subsequently increase brand awareness through word-of-mouth and influence referrals from family and friends. ...

Global Dominion Financing, Inc. (Global Dominion) is one of the leading financial services providers in the country, catering mainly to the underbanked Filipinos, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through financing products such as car and truck refinancing, and car and truck financing. The company's consideration to further strengthen its brand equity beginning in 2022 made a substantial improvement in its sales, growth, and popularity. From 79 branches in 2022 to 84 branches in 2023 to 116 branches at the beginning of 2024 up to its target of reaching more than 200 branches and marketing offices by the end of 2024, its massive expansion nationwide calls for more assertive marketing communications, and its recent successes only tell the organization that it is heading the right direction in various aspects of its operations. With this, this paper aims to comprehensively tackle the rationale for expanding current marketing communications efforts with the continued application of consumer-based brand equity framework, the use of brand ambassadors, and detail the action plans that will improve brand awareness and consequently improve the target audience's purchase intention, using insights from reviewed literature, focus group discussion, survey, and current data analysis, to bring the marketing objectives of Global Dominion into fruition in 2025. Unlocking our understanding of effective marketing communications campaigns for a non-bank lending and financing company can result in not just cost efficiency for firms but convenience to financial consumers as well. Connecting a service that is relatively novel to some communities aids in improved financial services awareness, increased monetary velocity, and consequent economic development.
... Outdoor advertising (OA) presents a complex highway issue, particularly billboards, posters, banners, and hoardings. While offering undeniable benefits to businesses through brand awareness and product promotion (Taylor et al., 2006), unregulated OA can create many problems. Billboards leverage their prominent placement for high visibility, but their proliferation can lead to visual clutter, diminishing the landscape's aesthetic appeal and contributing to visual pollution (Wakil et al., 2019). ...

Purpose: This study examines visual pollution along the Bolgatanga highway, focusing on outdoor advertising (OAs) and signage. It aims to identify the causes, assess impacts on road users, and propose strategies to mitigate visual pollution, addressing a critical gap in Ghanaian environmental policy and research. Design/Methodology/Approach: A survey of 200 road users was conducted on a 3.4 km highway stretch between the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital Intersection and the STC Bus Terminal. Data were collected using a structured online questionnaire and photographic analysis of visual clutter. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse responses regarding demographics, causes of visual pollution, and its impacts. Findings: The survey identified poorly maintained banners (47%) and large billboards with excessive text (39.5%) as primary contributors to visual clutter. Overhead signs also obstructed scenic views (21.5%). Road users expressed mixed views on OAs: 39.5% appreciated their navigation utility, while 31.5% found them distracting, particularly in high-traffic areas. Motorcyclists and pedestrians were especially vulnerable to visual distractions, increasing road safety concerns. Research Limitation: The research is geographically confined to a single highway stretch in Bolgatanga, necessitating further studies across broader contexts to validate and extend the results. Practical Implications: Improved design standards should prioritise safety and community aesthetics, with input from graphic design professionals. Social Implication: Addressing visual pollution can improve road safety, reduce environmental stress, and enhance Bolgatanga's aesthetic and cultural identity, benefiting residents and visitors. Originality/Value: This study is among the first to explore visual pollution in a Ghanaian municipality, highlighting its environmental and safety implications. It offers practical solutions integrating urban planning, graphic design, and public policy for a visually sustainable future.
... For example, a billboard's size, shape, location and viewing angle affect visibility and in some cases, obstructions such as trees, traffic signals and vehicles can partially block an onlooker's view of a billboard. As a result, detecting billboards in images can be challenging due to the dynamic nature of their content [2] [3]. ...

Advertising is essential to increase product awareness and foster a positive outlook, which in turn helps sales. To promote the brand and its products, billboard advertisements are widely used. This paper presents a novel approach for classifying billboards. The proposed method utilises Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures to extract features from the images to enable classification. The model is trained on a dataset of billboards collected from various locations and achieves results that demonstrate high classification accuracy. The system is trained and evaluated using the CIFAR10 dataset, which includes 10 classes of objects and an additional 11th class-'billboard', is included. The experiment utilises five different CNN archi-tectures: Basic CNN, ResNet, Visual Geometry Group (VGG), MobileNet, and DenseNet. The performance and evaluation of each architecture are presented in detail, and extensive experiments and comparisons are conducted to determine the most effective model for classifying billboards. The results indicate that a CNN and its architectural designs are a promising solution for automating the classification of billboards in the wild.
... Building on Lindholm's (2020) research on political protests and electoral participation, we investigate various forms of political participation as expressions of political interest. This study incorporates both explicit and implicit interest in politics, the latter reflecting satisfaction with the state system, based on selective perception theory (Taylor, Franke, & Bang, 2006). Selective perception theory posits that individuals are influenced by information aligning with their beliefs and values, potentially shaping their political behaviors. ...

Scepticism towards science has become an important topic in recent times. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which this scepticism can be explained by cognitive styles. Previous research has attempted to link certain individual differences (e.g. religiosity, conservatism, conspiracy thinking) to pseudoscientific beliefs. Theoretical frameworks have attempted to outline several factors that influence anti-scientific attitudes. Cognitive styles have usually taken a minor role as one of the factors. We propose that basic cognitive styles represent earlier antecedents of antiscientific beliefs. Participants completed the following cognitive style measures: Actively Open-Minded Thinking, Need for Cognition, Dickman’s Impulsivity Inventory, and the Decision Style Scale. Finally, participants completed the Scepticism toward the Scientific Method Scale (SMSS). Multiple linear regression with the SSMS as a criterion and cognitive style measures as predictors showed that the overall model explained 24% variance. Measures of intuitive and dysfunctional impulsive thinking were positive predictors of scepticism. The tendency towards open-minded thinking and functional impulsivity were negative predictors. These results show that a significant proportion of the variance in antiscientific attitudes can be explained by focusing only on cognitive styles. Keywords: scepticism towards science; cognitive style; conspiracy mentality

Previous research of individual differences in metacognition has not provided a clear answer as to which personality traits predict metacognitive judgments. There is some evidence to suggest self-confidence together with extraversion, agreeableness, and openness represent robust predictors. But it seems results depend on the type of cognitive task being assessed. Our aim was to determine how much variance in metacognitive judgments in two general cognitive tasks can be explained by the Big Five personality traits. Participants completed the IPIP 50 personality inventory, 11 matrix reasoning, and 14 number series tasks. The tests were followed by two assessments; their own performance as well as that of an average participant. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted with performance (number of correct responses) in the first and personality factors in the second step as predictors for two indicators – self-assessed performance and self-evaluation relative to others. Similar results were obtained for both metacognitive parameters. Performance was a positive predictor with personality explaining more variance in total with extraversion being a positive, and agreeableness a negative predictor. Keywords: metacognition; reasoning; personality; metacognitive judgments

Multi-stakeholder marketing is growing in importance, both in theory and practice. However, it still appears poorly conceptualized as an integrated discipline, and its applications are untapped. Therefore, this paper delves into such a concept by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) to uncover how multi-stakeholder marketing has evolved, its applications for marketing and societal outcomes, and future research and practical directions. Our findings, overall, reveal a growing consensus among scholars on the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders in marketing value-creation processes, moving from narrow to interconnected relationships. We outline that most studies addressing multi-stakeholder marketing appear in the traditional marketing field rather than the corporate and/or social/green marketing segments. However, they are still dominated by an instrumental perspective that leverages multi-stakeholder engagement to serve pure marketing scopes, such as creating a competitive advantage and leaving social issues aside. While still residual, this represents an advancement in the field, and we argue that traditional marketing strategies should broaden their applications by engaging interconnected stakeholder groups that naturally open the traditional marketing boundaries to society. We provide our conceptualization of multi-stakeholder marketing, including key characteristics, based on observed best practices and arguments, which will serve as a basis to elaborate practically and theoretically in the future.

Even though the obligation to carry out a Covid-19 booster vaccination still applies to long trips using public transportation in Indonesia. One clause regarding checking policy for symptoms of Covid-19 is still often ignored by train passengers because the symptoms of Covid19 are still similar to those of influenza. Somehow, the travel policy is not fair for comorbid person which cannot have Covid-19 vaccination. This research goal is to propose an alternative policy, which is a part of policy management framework, to prevent the transmission of covid19 by long-distance train travel in new era when the enforcement of Covid-19 regulation has been repealed. As alternative of Covid-19 vaccination requirement, the use of data mining algorithm will be proposed ning algorithm to determine whether or not it is permissible to travel long distances by using the dominant covid-19 like symptoms. The results of this study are in the form of a reasoning knowledge regarding the symptoms that passengers need to pay close attention to avoid the risk of transmission of Covid-19. Even though the accuracy of the decision is still 66.67% using C4.5 algorithm, it is the first step to be implemented in a new era, namely the era of prevention of Covid-19, no longer an era of mitigation. The publication of this result is put on bulletin board design

The problem of visual pollution is a growing concern in urban areas, characterized by intrusive visual elements that can lead to overstimulation and distraction, obstructing views and causing distractions for drivers. Large‐area advertising structures, such as billboards, while being effective advertisement mediums, are significant contributors to visual pollution. Illegally placed or huge billboards can also exacerbate those issues and pose safety hazards. Therefore, there is a pressing need for effective and efficient methods to identify and manage advertising structures in urban areas. This article proposes a deep‐learning‐based system for automatically detecting billboards using consumer‐grade unmanned aerial vehicles. Thanks to the geospatial information from the drone's sensors, the position of billboards can be estimated. Side by side with the system, we share the very first dataset for billboard detection from a drone view. It contains 1361 images supplemented with spatial metadata, together with 5210 annotations.

The authors report results of two field experiments that tested the sales response to outdoor advertising. The experiments manipulated the media weight by location (spatial effects), promotion message, and the effects of incorporating outdoor advertising in multiple-media campaigns. The first study showed that, in addition to the weight of the outdoor media, the temporal, spatial, and promotional effects were significant. The second study showed that outdoor media have spatial effectiveness when used as a part of a multimedia campaign. These results confirm that sales response to outdoor advertising is immediate but mediated by location of exposure and other elements of the marketing plan.

The authors develop and test a new model of store choice behavior whose basic premise is that each shopper is more likely to visit the store with the lowest total shopping cost. The total shopping cost is composed of fixed and variable costs. The fixed cost is independent of, whereas the variable cost depends on, the shopping list (i.e., the products and their respective quantities to be purchased). Besides travel distance, the fixed cost includes a shopper's inherent preference for the store and historic store loyalty. The variable cost is a weighted sum of the quantities of items on the shopping list multiplied by their expected prices at the store. The article has three objectives: (1) to model and estimate the relative importance of fixed and variable shopping costs, (2) to investigate customer segmentation in response to shopping costs, and (3) to introduce a new measure (the basket size threshold) that defines competition between stores from a shopping cost perspective. The model controls for two important phenomena: Consumer shopping lists might differ from the collection of goods ultimately bought, and shoppers might develop category-specific store loyalty.
