Some of the challenges faced by the mining industry in Northern Territory (NT), Australia are discussed. These challenges include: social issues, extreme climatic conditions, unique environment and remoteness. The NT Department of Mines and Energy recognizes these challenges and they demonstrate that they are able to meet the expectations of mining industry.

Isolation of thermophilic iron-oxidising bacteria from sulfidic waste rock

A thermophilic, rod-shaped, iron-oxidising bacterium was isolated by enrichment culture of rock samples from an overburden dump at the Rum Jungle mine site in Australia's Northern Territory. Oxidation of ferrous iron and sulfur occurred at 50–55C, with a temperature maximum of 60C. The isolate required yeast extract for growth. The pH optimum for iron oxidation at 50C was 1.4. Rapid ... The paper describes the current state of uranium exploration activities and progress on remediation works in the NT before providing an update on the ongoing development and remediation-related activities at the Ranger Uranium Mine. The paper will also provide an update on recent changes in the regulatory regime.

We propose a cross-country productivity growth decomposition that allows us to quantify the industry-level contributors to an aggregate productivity growth differential. We deploy this cross-country decomposition to quantify—for the first time—the disaggregate contributors to the divergence in market sector productivity growth between Australia and New Zealand. Most of the industries are found to add to the divergence, with particularly large contributions coming from differences across the mining and wholesale trade industries.
