Consumption of significant amounts of yeasts for nutritional use was reported during war‐time. The Germans incorporated about 1.6 × 104 tons of Candida utilis per year into human food, and during world war II, used Geotrichum candidum to supplement human foods when there was shortage of vitamins and proteins.

A Comparative Look at Air-Ground Support Doctrine and Practice in World War II

This study summarizes the air-ground support doctrine and systems employed by both the Allies and their adversaries in World War II. It is intended to identify similarities and differences in the doctrinal and procedural systems employed by the combatants; it is in no sense a complete historical study of air-ground operations during the war. The value of the study lies in its narrow focus on a ... [Show full abstract] specific application of air power and in its comparative examination of this application. This approach helps us to understand that, as of 1939, close air support for ground combat forces was a tactic universally discussed by the military powers but not universally accepted and practiced until after the war. At the onset of the war, only the Germans had developed a doctrine and a procedural system for close air support. The Russians and the Japanese had a doctrinal base, but lacked the integrating procedures necessary to convert doctrine into practice. Italy and France had neither doctrine nor procedures for substantive close air support. In the case of the United States and Great Britain, prewar debate and doctrine tended to inhibit development of close air support. Once the war began, battlefield requirements forced change. Despite their different starting points, by war's end all major belligerents employed air-ground systems with some remarkably similar features. However, there were major differences between the U.S. and British systems and the German version. These similarities and differences are described in this paper. The appendix describes current Soviet close air support doctrine.

Dr. Turbiville's essay discusses the logistics and sustainment of guerrillas operating in the Soviet Union behind German lines during World War II. The paper is a significant step in addressing the research shortfall on insurgency ... [Show full abstract] logistics. Dr. Turbiville posits that there is a high correlation between USSR planners' studies of Soviet partisan operations in World War II and how the USSR sponsored and supported insurgencies throughout the Cold War period. He effectively argues that this mindset "constituted the base upon which Soviet and Russian guerrilla operations and support approaches and techniques were developed" in the 60 years since World War II. Turbiville clearly identifies how the Soviet perspective on the effectiveness of guerrilla operations "constituted the most frequent means of shaping the course of military actions in low intensity conflict." Implicit in this paradigm is the critical link between Soviet special operations units and partisan or guerrilla activities. A significant portion of the report discusses how the Soviet Union supplied guerrilla forces during the war. Dr. Turbiville emphasizes three distinct types of supply sources guerrillas can use: local or prepositioned supplies, captured supplies, and supplies provided from external sources. Resupply by Soviet aircraft was an extremely important transportation medium used by the USSR. Although most insurgents fighting against the United States are unlikely to use aerial resupply due to U.S. air supremacy, these three broad supply categories are still valid and are present in our current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the most valuable sections of Dr. Turbiville's work is the superb recap in the essay's conclusion of 13 key elements of insurgency sustainment.

There are many functional, organizational and ideational similarities between the labour services in Germany, the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) and in Norway, Arbeidstjenesten (AT). There were numerous conduits for transnational transfers of ideas and practices, especially as the RAD oversaw the creation of the Norwegian obligatory service during the occupation. Although the German conception of ... [Show full abstract] labour service inevitably influenced the development of the AT, the AT was not simply a copy of a German model. Norway had its own history of voluntary labour services and the labour service idea resonated with existing structures in Norwegian society and politics. This article discusses what elements of the model were adopted and rejected. Contingencies, context and continuities also played a decisive role in shaping the Norwegian service, for which the German RAD served as an example of what a labour service should look like, but also what it should not look like.

Acrylic fibres containing the dispersed biopolymer exhibit properties of soft handle, increased hygroscopicity and electrical conductivity similar to those of wool. GRETA: Ernährung von Kleinkindern in Deutschland

Die Ernährung in der frühen Kindheit hat kurz- und langfristige Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit und prägt das spätere Ernährungsverhalten. Umfassende Kenntnisse der Ernährungspraxis sind daher von großer Bedeutung. In der German Representative Study of Toddler Alimentation (GRETA) 2008 wurde eine Stichprobe von Eltern mit 10–36 Monate alten Kleinkindern nach kombinierten Quotenvorgaben (TNS ... [Show full abstract] Access-Panel) gezogen. Erhoben wurden 7-Tage-Ernährungsprotokolle. Die Verzehrsmengen wurden von den Eltern anhand der Häufigkeit altersadaptierter Portionsgrößen erfasst. Im Folgenden wurde der Lebensmittelverzehr und die Nährstoffzufuhr von 1–3-jährigen Kleinkindern (n = 391) abhängig von Geschlecht und sozioökonomischer Schicht ausgewertet. Im Vergleich zu den Empfehlungen des Präventionskonzeptes der optimierten Mischkost wurden von den Kleinkindern im Mittel zu wenig getrunken und zu wenig pflanzliche Lebensmittel mit Ausnahme von Obst gegessen. Die Empfehlungen für den Verzehr tierischer Lebensmittel mit Ausnahme von Fisch und Süßigkeiten wurden dagegen erreicht bzw. überschritten. Kinder der oberen Schicht verzehrten tendenziell mehr pflanzliche Lebensmittel und weniger Fleisch / Wurstwaren als in der unteren Schicht. Die Energiezufuhr lag in den Altersgruppen nahe dem Referenzwert für den Energiebedarf bei mittlerer körperlicher Aktivität. Die Zufuhr der Hauptnährstoffe (Fett; Kohlenhydrate) lag im empfohlenen Bereich. Die Qualität der Fette und Kohlenhydrate ist hingegen verbesserungsfähig. Die Proteinzufuhr überstieg die empfohlene Zufuhr um das 2- bis 3-Fache. Die Referenzwerte für Vitamine und Mineralstoffe wurden mit Ausnahme von Eisen, Jod (ohne Jodsalz) und teilweise Folsäure erreicht. Im Kleinkindalter finden sich bereits ähnliche Abweichungen von den präventivmedizinischen Empfehlungen für die Lebensmittelauswahl wie bei älteren Kindern und in der Familienernährung generell. Die Nährstoffzufuhr ist dagegen im Großen und Ganzen gut.
