Water current and sediment flux of a tidal inlet at Salimpur coast, Chittagong, Bangladesh

Authors:

Abstract

This paper covers a primary study of water current and suspended sediment flux during spring tidal cycles, across an inlet situated at Salimpur coast, Chittagong. The study revealed that ebb tidal current was higher than that of it’s flood tidal counterpart both in February and in October. Measured flood tidal sediment flux across the inlet was found higher compared to ebb tidal flux. The total sediment inflow carried in suspension up into the inlet, cannot be overwhelmed by the ebb discharges into the sea. The analytical results imply high rate of sediment gain through the inlet basin during the measured spring tidal cycles that indicate a mode of accretion in the study area.
