Abstract

Two different techniques of potential interest to bibliometricians and serials collection specialists are used to identify and study core journal literatures. The genetics literature is used as an example of their application. Intercitation data from the Journal Citation Reports for Science Citation Index are analyzed using spreadsheet software to identify a core network of thirty-three genetics journals linked by substantial intercitations. Cocitation data for these thirty-three journals are gathered online from SCISEARCH. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSSX) programs are used to cluster journals based on cocitation pattern similarity and to create a two-dimensional map that graphically illustrates the subject structure of genetics. Genetics lacks a single unified core literature; it consists of a number of loosely linked research specialties, each with its own "core" journal set. Core network analysis and cocited journal mapping are useful in identifying a subject-focused core literature, measuring relative journal prominence, gaining a broader view of information generation and use by a library's clienteles, and establishing long-term collection development plans.

Background: Solid dispersions are an effective formulation technique to improve the solubility, dissolution rate, and bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs for oral delivery. In the last 15 years, increased attention was focused on this technology. There were 23 marketed drugs prepared by solid dispersion techniques. Objective: This study aimed to report the big picture of solid dispersion research from 1980 to 2015. Method: Scientific knowledge mapping tools were used for the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of patents and literature from the time and space dimensions. Results: Western Europe and North America were the major research areas in this field with frequent international cooperation. Moreover, there was a close collaboration between universities and industries, while research collaboration in Asia mainly existed between universities. The model drugs, main excipients, preparation technologies, characterization approaches and the mechanism involved in the formulation of solid dispersions were analyzed via the keyword burst and co-citation cluster techniques. Integrated experimental, theoretical and computational tools were useful techniques for in silico formulation design of the solid dispersions. Conclusions: Our research provided the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of patents and literature of solid dispersions in the last three decades.
... While the majority of the journals remain embedded in one or more specialized publication and citation structures, the matrix thus is nearly decomposable . In other words, the vectors of the journal distribution span a multi-dimensional space in which clouds can be distinguished, but the delineation of these clouds at the edges remains fuzzy (Bensman, 2001) and varies with the perspectives chosen by the analyst McKain, 1991). The citation impact of Environment and Planning B can be visualized using its citation relations with journals in its environment as the links of a network. The size of the nodes is varied in correspondence to the relative citation impact in this environment. Additionally, one can correct for the effect of within-journal "self"-citations. The network can be partitioned and clustered using algorithms from social network analysis. After transposing the matrix in terms of rows and columns, the citing patterns can be mapped analogously. Citing patterns reflect the activity of the community of authors who publish in the journal, while being cited indicates reception. Environment and Planning B is cited across the interface between the social sciences and the natural sciences, but its authors cite almost exclusively from the domain of the Social Science Citation Index.

The relationship between organizational culture and corporate sustainability initiatives and practices, such as cleaner production, is widely recognized, yet little is known about an organizational culture conducive to sustainability. Cleaner production entails managing the physical aspects of production and transforming the organization's culture. However, the existing research primarily investigates a corporate culture that focuses on enhancing productivity. While research on sustainability-productive culture is scanty, it concentrates on the cultural level of artifacts of sustainability practices, leaving much unknown about the deeper cultural levels of conscious and unconscious assumptions and beliefs that constitute the essence of organizational culture. The present study aims at discovering cutting-edge knowledge on sustainability-productive organizational culture. It adapts the Integrated Systematic Literature Review framework to identify scholars from the Scopus database who have played a significant role in creating the knowledge base and their documents during the past 27 years. As a result, relevant descriptive statistics of the collective body of knowledge, two schools of thought, influential scholars, and methodological issues are derived from the literature. Two frameworks on sustainable cultural transformation and sustainability organizational culture are derived from the cutting-edge knowledge, as informed by the work of the recognized key scholars. These frameworks highlight the hitherto unacknowledged importance of a normative grounding in cultural assumptions and values, delivering cutting-edge knowledge in the field of sustainability organizational culture. Research, theoretical and managerial implications from the review are also discussed.
... Bibliometrics is a branch of study that employs mathematical and statistical techniques to explore publishing trends in the distribution of information, and it is a set of tools that academics can use to analyze published data (Pritchard, 1969;McCain, 1991). Impact indicators, citation and cocitation analysis, and bibliometric mapping are examples of such methodologies. ...

Purpose: The aim of this research is to examine scientific articles on team resilience using bibliometric analysis methods. Design/Methodology: In the study, articles on team resilience in the Web of Science database were examined in terms of publication year, author, research area, country of publication, keywords, and references. Findings: As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that research on team resilience has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of social sciences, sports sciences, and business administration. It has been seen that the countries with the most studies are the United States, England, and the Netherlands. Limitations: One of the limitations of the research is that the sample only consists of articles related to team resilience in the Web of Science database. Originality/Value: Although the concept of resilience is a subject that has been studied countless times in different disciplines all over the world, it is seen that the subject of resilience at the team level has only recently started to be the focus of attention. It can be said that team-level studies can make meaningful contributions in areas where intragroup interactions are important.

This open access volume explores peer review in the scientific community and academia. While peer review is as old as modern science itself, recent changes in the evaluation culture of higher education systems have increased the use of peer review, and its purposes, forms and functions have become more diversified. This book put together a comprehensive set of conceptual and empirical contributions on various peer review practices with relevance for the scientific community and higher education institutions worldwide. Consisting of three parts, the editors and contributors examine the history, problems and developments of peer review, as well as the specificities of various peer review practices. In doing so, this book gives an overview on and examine peer review , and asks how it can move forward. Eva Forsberg is Professor of Education at Uppsala University, Sweden. Her research focuses education governance and evaluation, academic work and the interface between educational policy, practice and research. This chapter aims to critically engage with the performative nature of bibliometric indicators and explores how they influence scholarly practice at the macro, meso, and individual levels. It begins with a comparison between two national performance-based funding systems in Sweden and Norway at the macro level, within universities at the meso level, down to the micro level where individual researchers must relate these incentives to knowledge building within their specialty. I argue that the common-sense “representational model of bibliometric indicators” is questionable in practice, since it cannot capture the qualities of research in any unambiguous way. Furthermore, a performative notion on scientometric indicators needs to be developed that takes into account the variability and uncertainty of the aspects of research that is to be evaluated.

The recruitment of full professors is critical for the formation of academia. The professorship is critical not only for the prosperity of the HEIs, but especially so for the establishment, development and communication of the discipline. In this chapter, we analyze the initial step of the typecasting process in the recruitment of full professors. We use a few cases to illustrate how the intellectual and social organization of the field of education science(s) is manifested in publicly posted job advertisements. The analysis shows that the field is characterized by heterogeneity and no longer has a basis in one single discipline. New relations between research, teaching, and society can be observed, as well as a narrowing of authority of the professorship but an increase of responsibilities.

Many warnings are issued against the influence of evaluation machineries (such as bibliometric indicators) upon research practices. It is often argued that human judgment can function as a bulwark against constitutive effects of evaluation machineries. Using vignettes (small case narratives) related to the Danish Bibliometric Research Indicator (BRI), this chapter shows that gatekeepers who “know the future” and use this “knowledge” in a preemptive or precautionary way play a key role in the construction of reality which comes out of the BRI. By showing that human judgment sometimes enhances or multiplies the effects of evaluation machineries, this chapter contributes to an understanding of mechanisms which lead to constitutive effects of evaluation systems in research.

Peer review is the most legitimate form of evaluation in academia, and a pillar of many decisions and processes in education, research, and other areas of life in higher education. Its legitimacy is based on the peer having relevant expertise to make judgements about the evaluand, and on its presumably external and disinterested character. However, in this chapter we identify what we call “peer advocacy”: when peer reviewers take on the role of promoter or advocate for the evaluand, or for any of the stakeholders involved. To explore this phenomenon, we analyse four cases in the context of Swedish higher education, based on documented studies and the authors’ own experiences. The cases are analysed to show how peer advocacy can be attributed not only to the peer reviewers themselves, but also to the evaluation model, conditions, and expectations. With a view to preserving the legitimacy and integrity of peer review, recommendations are made both to those who commission evaluations and to peer reviewers.

While research merits have long been the priority in the recognition of institutions and scholars, teaching is often downplayed, appearing as a practice of less worth in Academia. To counteract this tendency, various systems to upgrade the value of education and to promote teaching excellence have been introduced by higher education institutions on a global scale. In this chapter, we explore the values and beliefs unveiled in the promotion of academics in such a system. We employ empirical data collected from an inquiry into the promotion of distinguished university teachers at a comprehensive university in Sweden. An analysis of reviewers’ judgements and legitimations shows that the intersection between promotion, peer review, and excellent teaching affects not only the peer review process, but also the notion of the distinguished university teacher.

This paper identifies the main trends in real estate research on frequently cited documents on the Web of Science database for 1990–2019, using quantitative methods in document-citation analysis. From the co-citation among the most cited 44 documents, this research presents a two-dimension visual mapping structure of real estate research and its important fields globally. Using statistical analyses including (1) correlation analysis, (2) factor analysis, (3) multi-dimensional scaling, this study identifies nine research trends on reducing significance order: (1) performance and investment features of property, (2) house price – household income, consumption, and investment, (3) house price setting, (4) amenity in property valuation, (5) green factor in the property market, (6) housing discrimination and segregation, (7) urban development, (8) modelling for real estate subsector and (9) urban transformation in cities of China. A further two clusters are formed as housing and investment property with factors surrounding the two. The top five ranking journals from the cited papers are presented. Findings of the study contribute to providing insights on the multidisciplinary structure of real estate research using quantitative method of bibliometric technique. This is believed to be the first study presenting comprehensive aspects of real estate research using co-citation analysis.

Evaluating open and distance learning journals will be helpful to the discipline and the global community at large, as research evaluation metrics are useful for measuring research productivity and its impact within the global community. The study adopted a citation analysis, using Harzel Publish or Perish software, to extract data from Google Scholar and Scopus databases. The data extracted includes the geographical coverage of the authors, the number of citations per year, the most cited articles and the number of research outputs produced within the study period. Four core open and distance learning journals were studied. The main findings showed that the journals have geographical spread, which is seen from the contributors. The journals are shown to receive a good number of citations; however, within the study period some journals received more citations than the number of publications produced. The most productive journal is also the most cited journal, although no significant relationship exists between the number of published articles and the number of citations made. The geographical spread of the journals presents them as being very useful for research and a useful factor for consideration in collection development plans within libraries.

In this paper, we analyze more than 400,000 cited references made by authors affiliated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration between 2009 and 2013. Our results suggest that these methods can be applied to research libraries in a variety of institutions, that the results of analyses performed at one institution may not be applicable to other institutions, and that cited reference analyses should be periodically updated to reflect changes in authors' referencing behavior.

Although human-computer interaction (HCI) has been developing for thirty years, the field has advanced slowly due to a lack of knowledge about HCI structure. This research thus seeks to explore and clarify HCI intellectual structure. Data collected from the ISI Web of Knowledge totaled 1,168 HCI related articles, and 33,724 references were identified. There were 75 highly cited research articles identified using a citation analysis and then implementing co-citation analyses, including factor analysis, multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis. According to cluster analysis, twelve core knowledge domains of HCI were identified: System capability, User interface design, Task of the HCI system, Evaluation of interaction, User acceptance of technology, Personalized system design, Interface analysis, Performance measurement and improvement, Development of interaction, Human reaction to technology, Facial expression, and Effective interaction. Among these topics, two of them, "Personalized system design" and "Facial expression", are new intellectual cores which did not appear in previous related researches. The findings of this study provide an intellectual structure and research directions for researchers and practitioners interested in the HCI field.

In countries like Denmark and Spain classified journal lists are now being produced and used in the calculation of nationwide performance indicators. As a result, Danish and Spanish scholars are advised to contribute to journals of high 'authority' (as in the former) or those within a high class (as in the latter). This can create a few problems. With a sample of Library and Information Science journals, the aim of this paper is to examine both the Danish and Spanish journal classification lists, and determine the potential use of network centrality measures for identifying possible mismatches of journal categories and implementing list revisions.

Supply chain management (SCM) has developed more than 30 years. However, few studies explore intellectual structure of SCM. The purpose of this study is to examine the intellectual structure of SCM through co-citation method. Data was collected from Web of Science online database. A total of 4,033 articles and 117,984 references were identified. Authors' productivity and 41 highly cited/value articles were extracted by using a citation and document co-citation analysis. Using cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling (MDS), we identified four key issues of supply chain management researches: Sustainable SCM (SSCM), strategic competition, value of information, and development of SCM where SSCM is an emerging area. Results in this paper are also compared with the previous studies, to show the shift in intellectual structure of SCM. The contribution of this study is to provide core knowledge for both researchers and practitioners to understand the aspects of SCM.

The purpose of this article is to explore the intellectual structure of supply chain management area by employing a co-citation method. Data was collected (4652 articles and 145,242 references) from the Web of Science online database. Author productivity and 41 frequently cited articles were identified through citation and document co-citation analysis. The result of this study identified four core topics to supply chain management research: sustainable supply chain management, strategic competition, value of information, and development of supply chain management. This study illustrates the shift in the intellectual structure of SCM, indicating research priorities, such as sustainability in supply chain management, relationships among organisations, the bullwhip effect within the supply chain, and performance measurement in supply chain management.
... Moreover, we tried to widen the objective of White and McCain by introducing another vantage point: that of journal co-citation analysis (JCA), as a complement to ACA. We found several relevant studies by McCain [27][28][29][30], one of which contains the following observation: journal co-citation mapping is potentially of interest both to the researcher studying the structure of scholarly specialities through the published literature and to the collection manager concerned with developing core journals lists, selecting journals and evaluating collections that serve particular research-oriented constituencies. It is likely to complement journal network analyses, particularly those studies focusing on journal similarity based on patterns of citations received or sent. ...

The visualization of scientific field structures is a classic of scientometric studies. This paper presents a domain analysis of the library and information science discipline based on author co-citation analysis (ACA) and journal cocitation analysis (JCA). The techniques used for map construction are the self-organizing map (SOM) neural algorithm, Ward's clustering method and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The results of this study are compared with similar research developed by Howard White and Katherine McCain [1]. The methodologies used allow us to confirm that the subject domains identified in this paper are, as well, present in our study for the corresponding period. The appearance of studies pertaining to library science reveals the relationship of this realm with information science. Especially significant is the presence of the management on the journal maps. From a methodological standpoint, meanwhile, we would agree with those authors who consider MDS, the SOM and clustering as complementary methods that provide representations of the same reality from different analytical points of view. Even so, the MDS representation is the one offering greater possibilities for the structural representation of the clusters in a set of variables.

Purpose – The aim is to investigate concepts that are used in depicting future visions of society, as afforded by technology, to (a) map the extent of their use, (b) examine the level of their dominance in different research areas and geographic boundaries, (c) identify potential overlaps, (d) analyse their longitudinal growth, and (e) examine whether any of the identified concepts has assumed an overarching position. Design/methodology/approach – Fourteen concepts, each of which is used to depict visions of future information infrastructures, were identified. More than 20,000 scholarly documents related to eleven of these concepts (those with 20 or more documents) are analysed by various qualitative/quantitative methods. Findings – The two concepts most referred to are semantic web and ubiquitous computing (all years), and internet of things” (year 2013). Publications on some newer concepts (e.g. “digital living”, “real world internet”) are minimal. There are variations in the extent of use and preferred concepts based on geographic and disciplinary boundaries. The overlap in the use of these terms is minimal and none of these terms has assumed an overarching umbrella position. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to scholarly publications; it would be relevant to also study the pattern of usage in governmental communications and policy documents. Social implications – By mapping multiplicity of concepts and the dispersion of discussions, we highlight the need for, and facilitate, a broader discussion of related social and societal implications. Originality/value – This article is the first to present a collective of these related concepts and map the pattern of their occurrence and growth. ... In the study for generating cocitation maps for Genetics, McCain (1991b) used journal cocitation patterns to compare the results with the core network analysis, which identified important journals using " the strong patterns of citations made and received by journals. " The study indicated that such bibliometric analyses using journals were helpful to " identify a manageable number of important journals at both the disciplinary and subdisciplinary levels " (McCain 1991b, 326) and journal co-citation analysis portrayed the subject structure of a discipline, offering collection specialists " the ability to map a reasonably representative set of journals rapidly, modify the map by adding additional titles, and identify journals likely to be of use to various constituencies represented by the clusters " (McCain 1991b, 326). Later, McCain (1998) used journal co-citation analysis in neural networks research, employing cluster analysis and MDS maps to identify foundation research areas in neural networks research. ...

The study investigated the intellectual structure of the library and information science field by journal co-citation analysis on thirty LIS journals with high journal impact factors. Patterns of journal-to-journal citation show the structure of journals in the field, visualized by a networked map of the journals. The result shows journals that can be considered as the core group and as the peripheral group, which corresponds to other studies for investigating the field's intellectual structure using other techniques, such as cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling.
... A frequently used international ranking, refered to as an impact factor, has been used by some in identifying " core journals " or journals considered basic to any collection offering coverage in a corresponding discipline. [McCain 1991] Impact factors from the JCR are found in the list of journals cited for a global perspective on the importance of the journals cited by faculty in this study. [Appendix B] Yet, a high impact factor alone does not necessarily mean that a particular journal should be added to a collection since other factors such as local research interest and price should be considered. ...

New academic programs in environmental science prompted a citation analysis of local faculty by the Texas Tech University Library (TTU). The purpose of this study is to characterize the citation patterns of the interdisciplinary field of environmental and human health as compared with other disciplines and to apply the results to collection development. Twenty-four articles were selected from 1996 and 1997 with over 1,600 citations to more than 950 listed references. The average age of citations was 10.5 years for journals and 9.4 years for books. On average, journals were cited 67 percent of the time while books were cited 17 percent of the time. Proceedings, theses, and technical reports were also cited but that data was not applied to collection development. The impact on collection development has been to identify a small number of specific books which were frequently cited but were not in the collection and to identify important subject terms with which to guide the selection of related books. Finally, twelve new subscriptions to frequently cited journals will be reviewed with faculty to determine their suitability as additions to the collection.
... Consequently, the decomposition remains sensitive to the choices of the various parameters involved, such as the seed journal(s) for collecting a citation environment, the threshold levels, similarity criteria, and the clustering algorithm. In other words, the vectors of the journal distribution span a multi-dimensional space in which clouds can be distinguished, but the delineation of these clouds at the edges remains fuzzy (Bensman, 2001) and varies with the perspectives chosen by the analyst (Leydesdorff & Cozzens, 1993;McKain, 1991). Particularly, if one wishes to construct a baseline against which to measure change, the distinctions among variations, measurement errors, auto-correlations in the data, and structural change may become too uncertain to be meaningful (Leydesdorff, 1991(Leydesdorff, , 2002. ...

In this study, the authors have three objectives: 1. To make aggregated journal-journal citation networks based on the Journal Citation Reports 2004 of the Science Citation Index (5968 journals) and the Social Science Citation Index (1712 journals) accessible online from the perspective of any of these journals. The results are available at http://www.leydesdorff.net/jcr04 as input-files for the visualization program Pajek. The user is thus able to analyze the citation environment of a scientific journal, for example, in terms of core groups and peripheries. 2. To study the journal structure of communication studies as a discipline using the Journal of Communication as an example. Communication studies can be considered as a single field from the perspective of "being cited," but it is divided into two communities who reconstruct the field differently by making references. 3. To replace the notion of a global impact factor with that of a local impact factor relative to a journal's citation environment. The local impact of a journal in its citation environment can be defined as its share of the total citations in this environments. The vertical size of the nodes is varied proportionally to this citation impact; the horizontal axis of each node will be used to provide the same information after correction for within-journal (self-)citations.

This article reports on findings from a citation analysis of publications of a group of university molecular biology faculty. The study examined the formats and disciplines of materials cited in published articles to deter- mine the nature of information used in their research. Citations in mo- lecular biologistsí publications are overwhelmingly to journal articles, with the largest number of citations to journals that class in biology. The spe- cialization displays a very high level of immediacy with a citation half-life of referenced articles just over four years. Ranked lists of journals cited provide insights to support library decision-making. The authors explore implications for library information services, collection development and management, and the potential for electronic services to this population. This research provided data on a local user population and also identi- fied a methodology that may be utilized in other settings.

This study aims to explore core journals in the field of Architecture and Urban Studies (AUS). This study analyzes 537,556 citation data of 2,075 KCI journals using social network analysis approach. First, using a visualization method, 50 journals are selected as an AUS journal. Second, three journals are determined as core journals of each sub-field using a network centrality analysis: Journal of the Architectural Institute of Korea - Planning & Design (architecture); Journal of the Architectural Institute of Korea - Structure & Construction (architectural engineering); and Journal of the Korea Planners Association (urban studies). These results can be used by researchers, professors, and planners who want to review research trends of AUS. Moreover, Architecture and Urban Research Information Center (AURIC) improves their service boundaries based on the results.

This study replicates the method of identifying core journals in the field of communication disorders published in the January 2001 issue of Library Resources and Technical Services for the purpose of determining the degree to which the ranked list changed after ten years. Two measures are used to assess the reliability of rankings over time: Spearman's rho rank correlations among the citing journals and coefficients of variation among cited journals. Rank correlations of groups of journals can mask important changes in rank for individual titles, so characteristics of the journals with the greatest movements in rank over a decade are explored. Major findings are that the discipline's literature grew substantially over the decade, and the core journals remained stable over ten years (rs= 0.73). However, despite stability of core journals over time, some titles changed dramatically in rank. Coefficients of reliability calculated for this group of communication disorders journals suggests that approximately one-third of observed change in ranks is because of random variability in works cited.

The current paper is a brief approximation to Bibliometrics as approach for the identification of paradigms in knowledge domains. It is analyzed the use of Bibliometrics for the study of cognoscitive and social structure of Science, as well as its intellectual history during the last 45 years. The article deals with perspectives based on citation analysis, and particularly processes of co-citation clustering, for the identification of research fronts and emergent paradigms. It is recognized two antagonic visions related to the use of citation analysis as technique for research evaluation: the constructivist critic and the normative theory. It is assumed the normative theory to identify the potential utility of Bibliometrics as approach, tool or method for the analysis of a knowledge domain. It is enunciated the importance of its integration to historical and epistemological approaches for the identification of paradigmatic transformations in the scientific activity.

This study aims to investigate the influences and interrelationships between journals of library and information science in Taiwan, in terms of information flow. Eleven Chinese journals and 2,031 articles during from 2001 to 2012 have been selected as subject and an 11 × 11 matrix was generated to conduct journal-to-journal analysis. Several bibliometric indicators proposed by Xhignesse and Osgood [16] have been examined, including indegree, outdegree, sending-receiving and self-feeding ratios. Degree and betweenness centrality of social network analysis have also employed to investigate the central and brokerage position of eleven journals in terms of network structure. In addition to overall structured analysis of twelve years, this study has furthering separated 12 years into three individual periods of four years to conduct a both synchronic and diachronic journal-to-journal citation analysis. Finally, this study discussed the implications and limitation of this study for Chinese journals of library and information science in Taiwan.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore and map the intellectual structure of biofuel research. Design/methodology/approach The study attempts to present the structure of biofuel research through document co‐citation patterns of core references. Document co‐citation analysis was performed using the Web of Science of the Thomson‐ISI database. A sample of 26 cited references was identified and the co‐citation frequencies were analyzed and represented them systematically within groups of similar researched topics. Findings The study shows the co‐citation analysis method suitable for depicting structure of biofuel research in document clusters by performing multivariate analysis: cluster analysis, factor analysis, multidimensional scaling and network analysis. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to research articles and co‐citation data for the first author only. For the co‐citation analysis, the cited references rather than the cited authors were used as the units for analysis. Practical implications Co‐citational analysis using multivariate tools provides a useful technique to explore and document the development of the field supplementing the insights normally available from the routine co‐citational analysis. Originality/value Specialties in biofuel research are identified and this may provide a valuable building block for future research.

Originally, most bibliometric research is aimed at the improvement of library collection_management methods and at the development of new methods for the selection of documents for a collection. This is also true of the impact factor, which was designed to evaluate journals before their inclusion in the collections of research libraries. Thus, the core of bibliometrics is librarianship. However, in recent years bibliometric studies are mainly conducted for the evaluation of scientific developments and individual scientists. In this case, a significant part of such research is carried out by workers at research libraries. Paradoxically, these approaches are not used in librarianship itself. With the expansion of the range of available tools, the development and use of bibliometric methods for the analysis of scientific information in libraries, especially in the acquisition process, once again has become relevant, which is consistent with the changes in science and publishing themselves. This has been stated by both foreign and domestic experts.

Many wearable device products come into the market recently. As a specific application of mobile health, wearable device has garnered attentions from both practitioners and scholars. In this paper, we investigate the impact of network externality and optimal product design of wearable device in a two-dimensional product differentiation model considering a market that has a broad product variety (horizontal differentiation) and various possible quality levels (vertical differentiation). Our model shows that in the presence of product variety competition and quality competition, firms will obtain the similar benefits when they supply differentiated and undifferentiated products without considering the network externality. In addition, we find that firms’ profits will be decreased in the presence of network externality in horizontal dominance differentiation, but increased in vertical dominance differentiation. Network externality has positive impact on higher-quality product’s profit, and also has positive impact on lower-quality product’s profit only when network externality is large. Furthermore, we also find that firms should let their products incompatible when network externality is large, and they should release compatible products when network externality is small.

Journal rankings and journal ratings are important to governments, research institutes, and scientific research in general, and they frequently serve as the criteria for evaluating research performance to determine whether specific researchers will receive promotions and/or earn research grants. However, the only widely adopted journal assessment method is known as impact factor (IF), which focuses on citations in academic journals. However, IF disregards the technological applications and value of academic journals. In this article, we propose a method to rank academic journals that utilizes non-patent references in patent documents. We also compare the differences between journal rankings derived by using IF with those derived from the Intellectual Property Citation Index (IPCI) across different fields; moreover, some fields contain positive and significant correlations between IF and the IPCI. The results of this study offer a new perspective from which to assess the technological value of academic journals, particularly those in the technological and scientific fields. This study considers linkages among science and technology and the needs of the stakeholders in journal assessment to shed light on journal assessment and journal ranking methods.

In this paper, we report the results of a bibliometric study in which we track cross-disciplinary citation behavior in the sciences. We hypothesize that cross-disciplinary citation in the sciences increased over the time period 1985-2000. Unlike most previous studies in this area, we assign discipline to a paper by its first author's affiliation, and we hypothesize that assigning papers to disciplines based on first-author affiliation would yield results consistent with previous findings on cross-disciplinary citation rates in the sciences. Using the output of scientists in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics departments at 12 large research universities in 1985, 1990, 1995, and 2000 as our data set, we measure the cross- disciplinary citation rates of each discipline and compare our results to the findings of previous studies in this area.

Titel: Bibliometrics, Citation and co-citation: A review of Literature. Although the coinage of the term Bibliometrics is fairly recent, its usage and practice can be traced back to the 1890's. Bibliometrics has been used vastly as a quantitative method for evaluating the literature in different disciplines, particularly in the last two decades. This article is intended to review bibliometrics and one of its major methods citation analysis in two different parts: the first part of this article aims to present a background of the bibliometrics and citation analysis. The applications of citation analysis are also studied in this part. In the second part of this article: document and author co-citation analysis as well as joumal-by-journal and country-by-counhy citation analysis are studied. Mapping science as an application of co-citation analysis is also studied, finally the limitations, problems and reliability and validity of citation analysis as a research method will be considered.

After reviewing previously published literature in citation analysis and literature mapping, this study mapped the literature of food science and explored the relationships found within it. Using articles published in the Journal of Food Science from 2003 through 2005, a stratified random sample of citations was studied to yield a ranked list of the thirteen most frequently cited journals, which formed a core set for further analysis. Using the Science Citation Index and a standard statistical package (SPSS13), a two-dimensional map was created, relationships between the journals were studied, and the discipline of food science was explored. The study is an extension of previously published research covering the years 2000–2002 and attempts to analyze and compare the results across time frames.

The goal of this paper is to present a visual mapping of intellectual structure in two-dimensions and to identify the subfields of the technology acceptance model through co-citation analysis. All the citation documents are included in the ISI Web of Knowledge database between 1989 and 2006. By using a sequence of statistical analyses including factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis, we identified three main trends: task-related systems, e-commerce systems, and hedonic systems. The findings yielded managerial implications for both academic and practical issues.

Discusses ways to measure the quality of a particular publication and the research article using a checklist format. Raises commentaries on each perception and variable to enlighten the novice regarding philosophical and ethical issues. The process described is not prescriptive but explorative, allowing the institutional evaluators to compare their individual evaluations using a standardized format and rating scale. The values assigning to each exclusive factor can be varied according to the institutional objectives.

Holdings figures from the OCLC database were compared to productivity measures from the Journal Citation Reports section of Science Citation Index and publisher circulation figures to determine whether there is a systematic relationship between easily gathered holdings and circulation figures and less easily obtained bibliometric indicators of journal value. Data were gathered for journals in eight subject areas and for a systematic sample of journals. Analysis indicates that there are significant relationships between holdings and citation measures for some subject areas, but not for the systematic sample of titles or for a composite of the eight subject areas. Publisher circulation figures drawn from Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory do not appear to be systematically related to either holdings or citation measures.

The merits and demerits of existing techniques for the selection of journals are discussed. This discussion brings out the fact that the use of journals characterizes their importance. A model for the ideal selection of journals is presented. A canon of decreasing usefulness is invoked to determine journal priorities and to formulate guidelines for selection. The highest priority in the matter of journal selection should be given to those journals which are highly cited, abstracted, and used.

Citation databases can be readily partitioned by examining the extent to which journals ″feed back″ to one another. A method has been developed to divide large files into clusters of journals without requiring the use of arbitrary starting points. Results are discussed relative to biomedical literature, and these findings are shown to be subsumed under a more general hypothesis regarding the structure of scientific literature. The specific problem attacked here was to partition a citation database, the 1975-1977 Science Citation Index, so as to generate a subdivision which would permit the analysis of the cardiovascular disease literature.

The new edition of Journal Citation Reports (JCR), based on a complete year of 1974 data, extends the scope of the preliminary edition which was based on one quarter year of 1969 data. It is published as a bound companion volume to the 1975 Science Citation Index (SCI) and lists 1974 citing journals and the earlier journals cited by them. Some 2,400 1974 citing journals are covered and these journals contained about 4.2 million references to earlier journal items. For each journal JCR shows the total number of citations received by 1972 and 1973 volumes, and by all years. It also shows the number of articles published in the cited journal in 1972 and 1973-that is the articles available for citing in those years. From this data the impact factor is calculated—the average number of 1972/1973 citations received by each 1972/1973 article. This discounts the effect of size (larger journals receive more citations). JCR also shows the number of articles published in each cited journal during 1974, and the number of 1974 citations to them from all other journals. The immediacy index is the average number of times each 1974 article was cited in 1974. Finally JCR shows, for each journal, the journals which cite it most heavily, and the journals which it cites most heavily.

This article reviews citation analysis literature and explores the use of citation analysis as a method for identifying highly cited core journals and indicating the disciplinary structure and interrelations of journals reporting reading research. Citation data from the 1980 Journal Citation Reports were used to generate a journal size-independent Reading Research Impact Factor as a criterion for selecting high impact journals. References from seven citing journals were used to produce a set of 92 candidate core list journals. After four iterations, a final diverse set of 27 highly cited journals emerged including publications from reading, education, educational psychology, educational research, language, cognitive psychology, general psychology, developmental and child psychology, and experimental psychology. Six journals from the area of communication were added to complete the list. Analysis of the 10-year temporal distribution of recent citations from 25 of the highly cited journals pinpointed the immediacy effect of reading research as being on the borderline between hard and soft science with such research exhibiting a strong flavor from cognate areas of psychology. Problems and limitations related to citation analyses are discussed.

An experiment was conducted to demonstrate the validity of a journal selection and ranking algorithm designed for any discipline. The characteristics of the journal generation procedure incorporate both cited and citing journals so that basic scientific research journals contributing to the research foundation of the discipline, as well as journals in the discipline, might be identified. A Discipline Influence Score was proposed as a journal weight which could reflect the relative citation influence of each journal to the discipline under consideration. Two evaluation studies showed that this method produced many journals which were perceived as frequently used journals by a group of American and Chinese professionals in veterinary medicine. Journals with high Discipline Influence Scores were also selected by experts in their compilations of basic recommended lists in this discipline. In particular, the easy implementation of this journal selection algorithm appears to be of practical use to resource-poor libraries.
