Collaborative Theater/Collective Artist: An Evolving Systems Case Study in Social Creativity

Abstract

Theater production is a collaborative creative activity. Social creativity recognizes the relationships between creative groups and the contexts in which creativity emerges. It also suggests that the interactive processes between the collaborators and their work form a center, which in turn becomes a kind of creative entity itself. An evolving systems case study of production practices at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival illuminates this process and illustrates the differences between seeing an aggregate creative activity and the more holistic view, in which the artwork functions like another person, a creature in dialogue with the personality of the creative system.

RESUMEN Tres tradiciones en el la sociología del arte han aportado visiones parciales pero complementarias de las lógicas sociales que contribuyen a convertir al arte en un campo social. En primer lugar, el arte como sistema social de Luhmann, segundo el concepto de habitus de Bourdieu, y, finalmente, la idea de roles de la sociología de las organizaciones. Basado en un trabajo empírico sobre la compañía " Teatro de Chile " , este artículo pretende dar una visión integral de tales teorías, con el fin de estudiar cómo confluye la evolución autónoma de las distintas lógicas que le dan vida a una compañía teatral. Así, se muestra claramente que en esta compañía, cada nivel se desarrolla con una lógica social autónoma en relación con un criterio específico: la producción de "buenas obras". Por otra parte, en las conclusiones se presenta un código artístico común, que permite la evolución simultánea de estas lógicas sociales. ABSTRACT Three traditions in art sociology have provided partial but matching visions of the social logics that contribute to convert art in a social field. First the art as a social system of Luhmann, second the concept of habitus of Bourdieu, and finally the notion of roles of the sociology of the organizations. Based on an empiric work, about the company "Teatro de Chile", this article aims to raise an integrated vision of such theories, in order to study: how the autonomous evolution converges with the different logics that give life to a theatre company. Thus, it is clearly shown that in this company, each level evolves with an autonomous social logic in relation to specific criteria: the production of "good plays". Moreover, in conclusions it presents a common artistic code, which allows the simultaneous evolution of these social logics.

Radio presenting is a rewarding yet challenging undertaking for novice and experienced radio personalities. Self-efficacy, a key determinant of performance, is an under-researched psychological variable that may influence radio presenters’ performance in a highly competitive industry. This study explored the self-efficacy beliefs of radio personalities at a community radio station in central South Africa. Eleven semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted and analyzed by means of directive coding. The findings in this study unpack the factors that impact positively and negatively on self-efficacy beliefs and may help navigate station management toward rendering the necessary support in empowering and retaining these employees.

In this paper, I will address basic aesthetic assumptions of the music theatre of Berlin-based Spanish composer Elena Mendoza and will outline the strategies of her working process in which she combines traditional score writing with a collaborative approach known from contemporary theatre or dance. I will discuss these issues referring to her two major music theatre pieces: Niebla after the novel by Miguel de Unamuno (premièred in Dresden in 2007), and La Ciudad de las Mentiras based on four short stories by Juan Carlos Onetti premièred at the Teatro Real in Madrid in 2017. As co-author of these two pieces, I give insight into our collaboration and decision-making process. In so doing I write within the methodological framework of autoethnography and participant observation.

The meaning [of creativity] that is of primary interest to us here is creativity as the achievement of something remarkable and new, something which transforms and changes a field of endeavor in a significant way. We are concerned with the kinds of things that people do that change the world. What has been true of this line of work is that it has failed to provide a coherent set of generalizations about the nature of great creativity and how it occurs. The field of creativity research is rich with examples from the lives of remarkable individuals, but lacks a framework for approaching the many issues that arise when trying to make more general sense of the data.
