Dissociation in Foster Preschoolers: A Replication and Assessment Study

This study replicated the Child Behavior Checklist factor structure of traumatic sequelae in maltreated children that was established by A. C. Hulette and colleagues (in press; see also A. Cholankeril et al., 2007). The factors represent dissociation and posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology. Results indicated that children who experienced both physical and sexual abuse in addition to neglect had significantly higher levels of dissociation than children who experienced (a) sexual abuse alone or with neglect, (b) physical abuse alone or with neglect, or (c) only neglect. The current study provides evidence that children who experience multiple forms of maltreatment are more likely to be dissociative, perhaps due to a greater need for a coping mechanism to manage the distress of that maltreatment.

Within this broad aim, our five specific aims were to examine teachers': awareness of laws governing teacher reporting of child abuse in Queensland and specific policies and/or procedures pertaining to child abuse and neglect within ... [Show full abstract] their education sector; knowledge of the indicators of different forms of child abuse and neglect; knowledge of the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in their school community; experiences of reporting to statutory authorities; and perceptions of the consequences of, motivators for, and deterrents to reporting to statutory authorities for themselves, families and individual children. Further, we adopted an innovative methodology to develop a further aim to explore the effects of case, teacher, and school characteristics on teachers' thresholds for detecting and reporting child abuse and neglect. Our research has identified critical factors in teachers' decision-making which may be used to inform initial teacher training and professional development for practicing teachers, school administrators and support staff. Through understanding these critical factors, we may be better able to address the issue of child abuse and neglect in school communities.

Childhood sexual and physical abuse in adult patients with borderline personality disorder

Experiences of abuse and neglect were assessed in 24 adults diagnosed as having borderline personality disorder according to the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Patients and in 18 depressed control subjects without borderline disorder. Significantly more of the borderline patients than depressed patients reported childhood sexual abuse, abuse by more than one person, and both sexual and ... [Show full abstract] physical abuse. There were no between-group differences for rates of neglect or physical abuse without sexual abuse. A stepwise logistic regression revealed that derealization, diagnostic group, and chronic dysphoria were the best predictors of childhood sexual abuse in this group of patients.

Although few factors have been examined in more than one study, when taken together, the findings suggest that parental behavioral and psychological characteristics may have the largest relations to neglect, and that limited socioeconomic resources are the most consistently documented risk factor for neglect.

How Effective Is the Multidisciplinary Approach? A Follow up Study

The multidisciplinary approach to diagnose, evaluate, and plan the treatment of victims of child abuse and neglect has been widely advocated and adopted by hospitals and community-based protective service teams. [Show full abstract] assessed by looking at the number of recommended services obtained by a sample of 180 children one year after evaluation by a multidisciplinary team. The results indicate that a large percentage of services recommended by the multidisciplinary team were obtained. This compares with the very low probability of service acquisition reported in samples of abuse and neglected children identified by CPS teams but not having access to a multidisciplinary evaluation. The multidisciplinary team plays a central role in acquiring the services needed to reduce the deficits and sequelae suffered by the victims of child abuse and neglect.

Decreases in state welfare benefit levels are associated with increases in foster care placement.
