Abbott (1967: 455)
stated:
"This species is named
after the Australian
malacologist, Dr.
Barry Wilson, and also
after Mr. Wilson Darwin of Philadelphia.". From this dedication
it is evident that this taxon was named after two persons,
which implies that the specific
epithet has an incorrect original spelling (ICZN Arl 31.1.2). Inevitably, the original
spelling of the epithet
has to be emended into wilsonorum(ICZN
Art. 32.5.1), with the
emended name retaining the original authorship
and date, viz. Strombus wilsonorumAbbott,
l
967.
This emendation however, has an implication. Petuch (199a: 263) described Strombus
(Iabatus)
uilsonorum,
which is a
junior homonym of Strombus
(Canaium)
wilsonorum Abbott,
1967.
We informed Dr. Petuch about our findings, who left the matter in our hands.
Because
Petuch (1994:263) stated
that this fossil
species is to be regarded
as "...
definitely ancestral
to (...) Strombus raninus
Gmelin, l79l ...", we introduce
Strornbus
praeraninus nom. nov. for S. wilsonorum Petuch, 1994,
not Abbott, 1967.

This study aimed to identify the microhabitat preference of Strombidae species present in selected intertidal zones of Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Occidental. A total of 406 individuals of Strombidae were collected and identified into 15 species. Most species of Strombidae were recorded to be abundant in seagrasses (Cymodocea rotundata and Thalassia hemprichii) and in algae (Gracilaria salicornia, Ulva lactuca and Ulva intestinalis). Strombidae were also observed along rocks, muddy sand, black sand, sediments and tide pools. A Kruskal-Wallis Test showed that there was a significant difference in species abundance among different microhabitat types (H[6] = 13.46, p = 0.036). This implies that the abundance of species among different habitats was not the same. Supporting this, the Cramer’s contingency test revealed a significant association between the abundance of species to their microhabitat type with a contingency coefficient of 0.76. Canarium labiatum was observed to inhabit G. salicornia, while Canarium mutabile preferred both rocks and tide pools. Canarium urceus favored C. rotundata; Canarium (Canarium) esculentum occurred in G. salicornia and T. hemprichii. Conomurex luhuanus was observed in U. intestinalis and G. salicornia. Euprotomus aurisdianae inhabited the seagrass, while Euprotomus bulla occurred in T. hemprichii and muddy sand. Laevistrombus (Gonggonus) turturella inhabited the C. rotundata. Lastly, Lentigo lentiginosus and all Lambis species were noticed in G. salicornia. Strombidae preferred both seagrasses and algae apparently because these microhabitat types serve as food and nutrient sources to these species.
... A few Indo-West Pacific strombids display a series of very small, sharp projections just posterior to the stromboid notch on the main sector of the adult outer lip. I have observed these teeth in Canarium urceus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. wilsonorum (Abbott, 1967) (for nomenclature see Kronenberg & Dekker, 2000;Willan & Kronenberg, 2004), both with sharp-edged rather than polished lips. No such ventrally directed serrations are present in other species that have been assigned to Canarium, including C. haemastoma (Sowerby, 1842), C. labiatum (Ro¨ding, 1798), C. maculatum (Sowerby, 1842), C. microurceus (Kira, 1959), C. mutabile (Swainson, 1821) and C. ochroglottis (Abbott, 1960). ...

The shells of many marine gastropods have ventrally directed serrations (serial projections) at the edge of the adult outer lip. These poorly studied projections arise as extensions either of external spiral cords or of interspaces between cords. This paper describes taxonomic, phylogenetic, architectural and functional aspects of serrations. Cord-associated serrations occur in cerithiids, strombids, the personid Distorsio anus, ocenebrine muricids and some cancellariids. Interspace-associated serrations are phylogenetically much more widespread, and occur in at least 16 family-level groups. The nature of serration may be taxonomically informative in some fissurellids, littorinids, strombids and costellariids, among other groups. Serrated outer lips occur only in gastropods in which the apex points more backward than upward, but the presence of serrations is not a necessary byproduct of the formation of spiral sculptural elements. In hard-bottom gastropods that do not flee from predators, pointed serrations may resist shear when the shell is clamped firmly to the substratum. The functions of serration in other gastropods are less clear, but likely involve defence against predators with soft feeding structures in some cases.

New taxonomic insights on the strombid fauna in the Dominican Republic are presented. Lobatus pascaleae spec. nov. is described. Strombus wilsonorum Petuch, 1994, Strombus (Lentigo) fetus Jung & Heitz, 2001, and Strombus (Tricornis) magolecciai Macsotay & Villaroel, 2001, are all junior subjective synonyms of Lobatus raninus (Gmelin, 1791). An updated list is given of Strombus and Lobatus species from the Dominican Republic Neogene.

The caenogastropod family Strombidae presently contains 107 living species and subspecies in 5 genera and 18 subgenera. The vast majority (87 species and subspecies) live in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific areas; some extend to the central Pacific. This issues of the Iconography on Strombidae describes all recent conchs, tibias and spider shells worldwide with the genera Tibia (14 species and forms), Terebellum (1 species with 3 forms), Lambis (14 species, subspecies and forms) and Strombus (95 species, subspecies and forms). The text is supported by 121 b/w drawings and 130 superb full colour plates for reference and identification.
