Association Between Periodontal Disease and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a complex medical disorder characterized by visceral fat-type obesity involving hypertension, and abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and components of metabolic syndrome (obesity, lipid abnormality, hypertension, and hyperglycemia) in industrial workers of a single company in Tokyo, Japan.
The study subjects consisted of 2478 adult employees (2028 men and 450 women; mean age: 43.3 years). The association between the presence of periodontal pockets and components of metabolic syndrome was investigated cross-sectionally using multiple logistic regression analysis, odds ratios (ORs), and 95 percent confidence intervals (CIs).
Body mass index, blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were significantly elevated (P < 0.05) in patients with periodontal pockets of 4 mm or more. We found that the OR of the presence of periodontal pockets adjusted for age, gender, and smoking habit was 1.8 (96 percent CI = 1.4-2.3) when the subjects with two positive components and without positive component were compared. And it was 2.4 (96 percent CI = 1.7-2.7) when the subjects with three or four positive components and without positive component were compared.
Our findings suggest an association between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome in Japanese workers between the ages of 20 and 60 years.

    ABSTRACT: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a condition, which constitutes a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This disorder is found prevalent in the industrialized societies of the world in epidemic proportions. Periodontitis is an oral disease of microbial origin characterized by loss of attachment apparatus of tooth, resulting in edentulism if untreated. Periodontitis has been attributed to produce a low grade systemic inflammatory condition. The link of periodontitis to various systemic disorders has led to the evolution of a new branch termed as "periodontal medicine." Studies reviewed in the present paper have indicated a positive link between the MS and periodontitis and it is suggested that subjects displaying several components of MS should be submitted to periodontal examination. Present studies have displayed coherent relation between the two entities. This review will address the vicious association between MS and periodontitis, depicting the commonality of pathophysiological pathway between the two entities. Systematic reviews, meta-analysis addressing the concerned subject were screened. Whether the systematic periodontal therapy in individuals exhibiting MS has the potential to reduce the incidence of various adverse systemic complications remains a logical proposition. Further, longitudinal and controlled trials with a large population would be imperative to depict the robustness in the association between MS and periodontal disease in human subjects.

    ABSTRACT: As taxas de prevalência e de incidência referentes à obesidade têm se tornado alarmantes, tanto em adultos como em crianças. O acúmulo excessivo de gordura no organismo pode acarretar prejuízos à saúde dos indiví-duos. Objetivo: o presente estudo tem como objetivo apresentar uma revisão de literatura sobre a interação da obesidade com a saúde bucal por meio de um es-tudo ordenado em periódicos de circulação nacional e internacional. Materiais e método: foram encontrados 514 estudos, dentre os quais, foram selecionados 18 artigos, com base nos seguintes critérios: época de pu-blicação, tema adequado ao proposto neste trabalho, ideias claras, objetivas e condizentes com o título do estudo. Resultados: os estudos selecionados mostraram associações entre doença periodontal e obesidade. Já em relação aos trabalhos que associavam cárie dental e obesidade, houve algumas divergências, estando es-tas em minoria. Conclusão: conclui-se que os pacientes obesos necessitam de atenção em saúde bucal, espe-cialmente em relação à prevenção da doença perio-dontal e cárie dentária. Palavras-chave: Saúde bucal.     ABSTRACT: High-frequency radar offers oceanographers a powerful yet convenient means of measuring coastal ocean currents and other air/sea interaction variables from land-based sites. The paper addresses the potential such a system offers for detecting the physically significant coastal circulation events known as coastal upwelling and relaxation. A high-frequency radar was in operation from April, 1990 until September, 1992 on the California Coast (USA) overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Monterey. Periods of months of uninterrupted radar operation have allowed the production of an unparalleled data set which includes radial ocean surface currents measured at five angles and eight range bins. Correlation of low-pass-filtered current measurements with shore-based measurements of sea surface temperature and buoy-measured wind speeds shows evidence of coastal upwelling and relaxation events
