Abstract

A variant method is proposed for determination of rate constants of elementary processes occurring within a plasma, including irradiation of the plasma by resonant radiation. In the proposed variant the radiant power is varied during experiment, but remains less than the value which causes saturation of fluorescence. It is shown that this method permits simultaneous determination of several constants. The technique is demonstrated for a C2 molecule. The effective section for thermal excitation of the level d3πg from states (X1∑ g+ + a3πu) is determined, equal to 3·10−18 cm2±80%.

The technique of saturation spectroscopy is applied to measure the concentration of C2 in the ³Π u state in oxyacetylene flames. The two level model is further developed and extended for use in intensity regions slightly lower than that required to saturate the resonances completely. As a result, it has proved feasible to measure both the C2 number density in the ³Π u state of ~10¹⁶/cm³ and an excited electronic state lifetime of ~10⁻¹² sec, both of which depend only on the Einstein A coefficient. The experimental setup is described in detail, and possible extensions of the technique to other atomic and molecular systems are discussed.

The application of pulsed resonance spectroscopy to the measurement of species concentrations in chemically reacting turbulent flows is discussed. The theory of such measurements is developed. An uncertainty analysis is performed and the results applied to typical combustion conditions. Experimental aspects are discussed. The method shows a significant theoretical improvement in accuracy over Raman and Rayleigh scattering techniques, and no significant barriers appear to block its development.

Laser resonance fluorescence was used to study the properties of the high-temperature plasma of the FT-1 tokamak device for the following parameters: hydrogen pressure of 0.0002 torr; magnetic field strength of 7.5 kOe; discharge current of 27 kA; and electron temperature of 300 eV. Concentrations and radial distributions of hydrogen neutral atoms and ions were determined.
