Paging vs. Scrolling: Looking for the Best Way to Present Search Results

Web designers are constantly confronted with the problem of displaying large amounts of information in confined spaces. To deal with this designers usually have two options, either present the information on one long scrolling page or divide it into smaller amounts on multiple web pages. Studies have found that shorter documents that require more paging tend to be superior in both performance and preference to longer pages that require more scrolling. For example, Piolat, Roussey, & Thunin (1998) found that participants who paged through documents had a better mental model of the text and were better able to locate relevant information and remember its main ideas than those who scrolled. Schwarz, Beldie, & Pastoor (1983) found that paging was preferred by inexperienced users but did not find significant differences in task completion time or search performance. Other studies have also found no differences between the two methods in terms of user performance (see Mills & Weldon, 1986). However, almost all of the studies that have been conducted were done prior to the advent of the Web. In today's Web environment users quickly scan most information, particularly search engine results. Because of this, it is possible that presenting long, scrollable pages may facilitate more efficient scanning, since users will not have to focus as much on paging while searching for the information. On the other hand, longer pages may be more disorienting, particularly for search tasks. Thus, the question posed in this study is how much information should be presented at one time on a search result web page?

shorter documents that require more paging tend to be superior in both performance and preference to
longer pages that require more scrolling. For example, Piolat, Roussey, & Thunin (1998) found that
participants who paged through documents had a better mental model of the text and were better able
to locate relevant information and remember its main ideas than those who scrolled. Schwarz, Beldie, &
Pastoor (1983) found that paging was preferred by inexperienced users but did not find significant
differences in task completion time or search performance. Other studies have also found no differences
between the two methods in terms of user performance (see Mills & Weldon, 1986). However, almost all
of the studies that have been conducted were done prior to the advent of the Web.

page?
METHOD
A Pentium II based PC computer, with a 60 Hz, 96dpi 17” monitor with a resolution setting of 1024 x
768 pixels was used. The participants’ performance was tracked by using Ergobrowser
TM
software.
Participants
Eighteen participants (10 males 8 females) volunteered for this study. They ranged in age from 19 to
55, with a mean age of 28 (S.D. = 12 years). The median Web use for the participants was 7-14 hours
per week (72% used the Web a few times per week or more).
Procedure
Users were asked to locate specific links on three search engine result pages, each with a different
layout (see Figure 1). Each layout had a different search domain (music, sports cars, and clothes) and
presented a different number of links on each page. All layouts presented a total of one hundred links.
One layout presented ten links per page (on ten pages), another presented fifty links per page (on two
pages) and another presented 100 links on one page. For each layout arrangement, participants were
instructed to search for specific links within the search domain results. For each search domain,
participants were presented with ten search terms that were identical to links located within a particular
result layout. After participants viewed each search term, they were instructed to search for a
corresponding link within the search results. For every ten links, one corresponding search term was
randomly selected. Each link had to be properly identified within five minutes to be considered correct.
Participants could search until they found the correct information by scanning the pages and using the
“forward” and “back” paging buttons, or until the time expired. The result layouts, their associated
search domain, and the search terms were counterbalanced by means of a Latin square design. The
web layouts were saved on a local server, which produced almost instant access to the search pages in
all conditions.

After finishing all the questions for each condition, participants answered a satisfaction questionnaire.
The questionnaire consisted of a 6-point Likert scale, with 1 = “Disagree” and 6 = “Agree” as anchors.
The questionnaire items were: “The layout made it easy to find information, there were too many
choices, the layout looks professional.” After participants answered the questionnaire for each condition
they ranked the three results layouts for general preference.
Results and Discussion
A within-subject ANOVA design was used to investigate actual performance (mean task completion
time) and perceived search efficiency performance for three types of link conditions. Preference across
conditions was analyzed using a Friedman Χ
2
.
Task Completion Time
Assessing the time taken to complete the search tasks revealed a significant difference between the
page length conditions (see Figure 2) in that the fifty-link condition had a significantly shorter
completion time than the ten-link condition [F (2, 28) = 4.88, p < .05]. It is possible that having to
page every ten links increased the search time because participants had to both attend to the search
task and find and click the “forward” or “back” button in order to progress to the next search result
page.

Perceptions of Search Efficiency
Easy to Find Information
In terms of how easy the information was to find, results indicated that the ten-link condition had a
significantly greater perception of being easier to search than the hundred-link condition [F (2, 32) =
4.01, p < .05]. It is interesting that having to page through successive search results was perceived as
being easier than scrolling through one long search result page, especially in light of the fact that it took
longer to find the information in the ten-link condition (see Figure 3).

Too Many Choices
Assessing the perception that a particular layout presented too many search choices revealed that the
hundred-link condition had significantly greater perception of presenting too many choices than the
ten-link condition [F (2, 32) = 6.72, p < .05]. It is possible that the ten-link condition was perceived as
easier to find information because it presented a more manageable amount of information (fewer
choices) at one time (see Figure 4).

Looks Professional
We also asked users if a particular layout looks more ‘professional.’ It was found that the ten-link
condition had significantly greater perception of looking professional than the hundred-link condition [F
(2, 32) = 3.28, p < .05]. This outcome may be due to the fact that most search engines default the
number of search results to ten per page and, thus, ten results would appear more professional looking.
It also could be that participants perceived the ten-link condition as more professional in appearance
because it was perceived as being easier to find information (see Figure 5).

Link Arrangement Preference
Analysis of the participants’ preference for each link arrangement revealed a significant difference in
ranking [Χ

(2, N = 17) = 12.82, p < .01]. Post hoc analysis revealed that the fifty-link arrangement was
significantly preferred to the hundred-link condition (see Figure 6). It is not too surprising that the
hundred-link condition was the least preferred, since it was perceived as presenting too many choices
and being more difficult to find information, even though participants using this condition were actually
faster in finding information than the ten-link condition.

CONCLUSION
Overall, the fifty-link condition had the fastest search time and was most preferred. It is possible this is
because this layout required only a limited amount of paging (only two pages). Conversely, the
hundred-link condition was by far least preferred. That is, it was perceived as being the most difficult
condition to find the correct information, as well as being perceived as the most cluttered. What this
suggests to us is that participants favored and performed best on layouts with both reduced paging and
scrolling. However, when forced to pick between the two, they clearly preferred paging, even though
participants using the ten-link condition took the most time to find the correct information. Accordingly,
this study seems to suggest that having moderate amounts of links per page (around 50 links) is
superior to having longer pages.

Interaction with digital text permeates practically all types of educational, professional and leisure activities of modern life. The effective working with digital instructions and materials determines the success in solving a number of real problems. At the same time, the negative impact of overly complex digital environments on learning outcomes, work efficiency, and subjective well-being has been proven in numerous empirical studies. In this work, an attempt is made to study the navigational characteristics of a digital text that are significant for solving practical problems from the standpoint of the Cognitive Load Theory. A total of 20 subjects (13F; 7M) took part in the experiment with intra-individual plan and 2x2 factorial design. Information retrieval was considered as a task, and the navigation characteristics of the text were varied under controlled experimental conditions in order to determine the optimal combination of navigational cues. Digital text environments with different navigation characteristics were designed. The indicators of oculomotor activity and performance data were analysed to determine the conditions causing the greatest excess cognitive load. A computational approach was applied to assess the relative effectiveness of conditions. It was found that information search in digital environments with less navigational cues provoke increase in scan-path complexity, searching time and number of fixations. These observations support the general hypothesis of this study, according to which a lack of navigation cues affect directly on the cognitive load growth during information search in digital texts.

In this paper, we introduce a novel type of navigation bar especially designed to provide users with additional information as they navigate long web pages that consist of several different sections and a large amount of content. In addition to facilitating scrolling, the proposed navigation bar enables users to quickly traverse the page without needing to manually scroll. Moreover, we present the results of a comparative study that analyzed the effectiveness of our proposed system with respect to traditional approaches. From the findings of our research, which includes an evaluation of individuals’ likelihood to use the proposed navigation bar, we can conclude that users have a strong preference for our system; also we found that it increases accuracy in information finding tasks. Consequently, we believe the proposed navigation bar design could enhance web usability and improve user satisfaction.

There are currently no existing guidelines for optimizing user experience in online image databases. Here we use established usability design principles to develop a set of 50 recommendations for improving database organization, navigability, and search functionality. We conduct a resource audit of commercial and non-profit image galleries and evaluate them upon our criteria. Our findings are summarized within a basic wireframe to be used as reference for prospective image databases in the future.

Une étude de Nielsen (2006), largement citée, indique que les internautes explorent les pages Web suivant un pattern en forme de "F". Ce résultat a amené les concepteurs à organiser les informations d'une page en fonction de ce comportement, même si aucune étude n'a permis de répliquer ces résultats. Bien que les conclusions de cette étude portent sur le comportement visuel, la question des patterns comportementaux permettant de décrire la navigation des internautes se pose de manière plus générale. L'objectif de cette thèse a donc été de déterminer si des patterns pouvaient être mis en lumière à partir de différents indicateurs. Trois études ont été réalisées. Dans la première étude, 112 participants devaient réaliser quatre tâches de recherche d’information sur deux sites web différents. Le protocole impliquait une répétition immédiate de ces mêmes tâches. Une classification automatique a permis d'identifier 4 patterns qui se distinguent à la fois en termes de navigation sur la page d’accueil, mais aussi de performances. Lors des répétitions, la classification nous a permis d’identifier 3 des 4 patterns précédents. Ceci implique que les individus ne répètent pas forcément leur façon de rechercher l'information et ceci, peu importe la tâche, et le site. La deuxième étude a porté sur 27 individus et impliquait, pour les participants, de se présenter trois fois consécutives à 48 heures d’intervalle, afin de refaire les mêmes tâches. La répétition des tâches, que ce soit à court ou à moyen terme, entraîne une augmentation des performances, c'est-à-dire que les tâches sont réalisées plus rapidement et de façon plus efficiente. Toutefois, les patterns identifiés diffèrent entre les répétitions à court et moyen terme. Un autre résultat observé est que les stratégies ou patterns ne sont pas propres aux individus. En d'autres termes, un individu peut présenter ou adopter plusieurs patterns d'une tâche à une autre, d'un site à un autre ou d'une répétition à l'autre. Enfin, pour notre dernière étude, nous nous sommes demandé si l’homogénéité de nos échantillons pouvait influer sur les patterns. Nous avons donc réalisé une expérimentation comptant 47 participants avec des profils variés. Les individus ont eu tendance à se distinguer selon les 4 mêmes patterns identifiés. Nous avons pu observer qu’en fonction des individus, une même stratégie pouvait conduire à la réussite ou à l’échec de la tâche. De plus, les styles d’apprentissage ne semblent pas liés aux patterns observés. Les limites et les perspectives de ces travaux sont discutées.

Ever notice that-in spite of their pervasiveness-designing web applications is still challenging? While their benefits motivate their creation, there are no well-established guidelines for design. This often results in inconsistent behaviors and appearances, even among web applications created by the same company. Design patterns for web applications, similar in concept to those for web sites and software design, offer an effective solution. In Web Application Design Patterns, Pawan Vora documents design patterns for web applications by not only identifying design solutions for user interaction problems, but also by examining the rationale for their effectiveness, and by presenting how they should be applied. • Design interfaces faster, with a better rationale for the solutions you choose. • Learn from over more than 100 patterns, with extensive annotation on use and extension. • Take a short-cut into understanding the industry with more than 500 full-color screenshots and a web site for help, discussion, and a collection of additional patterns.

Increasingly, users are accessing the e-commerce website by mobile device. Users are performing complicated tasks when they are shopping on line, like searching, comparing and adding products to cart. Due to the vast application on PC and limited size of the screen of the mobile device, it is common to present web page in scrolling format, especially on the SRP (Search Result Page) of mobile Commerce Site. Although a large body of work have done to investigate the impact of the scrolling and paging on the words reading, comprehension and even recall, the results of these studies have few implications for the SRP of e-commerce web site. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of interaction style (paging or scrolling) on the SRP of mobile commerce web site. We examine execution times for within SRP searching tasks varying interaction styles (scrolling and pagination). Meanwhile, error rate of recall task was recorded to indicate the influence of interaction style on the working memory.

Filling in online forms has become a daily behavior. However, when users fill in online forms, they often confront difficulties. It is necessary to consider how to improve the online form design. The study took web resume as an example; four resume prototypes were created for user testing, and researchers conducted contextual inquiry and interviews related to these. The results revealed that most users suggest the descriptions of questions should be clearer, and the number of pages and items should be appropriate. This study further developed the context of users’ filling in online forms including affinity diagram and flow model, and proposed online form design guidelines.

This study investigated the learning performance and opinions of university students on hypermedia with different page lengths. The subjects were 127 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Education, YTU. Two hypermedia, one with long and the other with short pages, were designed by the researchers. The content presented on these hypermedia, the multiple choice test and a questionnaire to collect the opinions were also developed by the researchers. To analyze the findings independent group t-test and Mann-Whitney-U tests were utilized. Major finding of the study is that the page length did not affect the learning achievement of students. All students did well on both short and long page conditions, also they were all happy with the page length they worked on. This shows that designing computer-assisted or Web-based instructional materials with short pages as eveybody got used to is not a necessity for the university students.

In the past decade, the World Wide Web has been subject to dramatic changes. Web sites have evolved from static information resources to dynamic and interactive applications that are used for a broad scope of activities on a daily basis. To examine the consequences of these changes on user behavior, we conducted a long-term client-side Web usage study with twenty-five participants. This report presents results of this study and compares the user behavior with previous long-term browser usage studies, which range in age from seven to thirteen years. Based on the empirical data and the interview results, various implications for the interface design of browsers and Web sites are discussed. A major finding is the decreasing prominence of backtracking in Web navigation. This can largely be attributed to the increasing importance of dynamic, service-oriented Web sites. Users do not navigate on these sites searching for information, but rather interact with an online application to complete certain tasks. Furthermore, the usage of multiple windows and tabs has partly replaced back button usage, posing new challenges for user orientation and backtracking. We found that Web browsing is a rapid activity even for pages with substantial content, which calls for page designs that allow for cursory reading. Click maps provide additional information on how users interact with the Web on page level. Finally, substantial differences were observed between users, and characteristic usage patterns for different types of Web sites emphasize the need for more adaptive and customizable Web browsers.

This paper reviews empirical studies concerning the readability of text from computer screens. The review focuses on the form and physical attributes of complex, realistic displays of text material. Most studies comparing paper and computer screen readability show that screens are less readable than paper. There are many factors that could affect the readability of computer screens. The factors explored in this review are the features of characters, the formatting of the screen, the contrast and color of the characters and background, and dynamic aspects of the screen. Numerous areas for future research are pinpointed.

Two studies using the methods of experimental psychology assessed the effects of two types of text presentation (page-by-page vs.scrolling) on participants' performance while reading and revising texts. Greater facilitative effects of the page-by-page presentation were observed in both tasks. The participants' reading task performance indicated that they built a better mental representation of the text as a whole and were better at locating relevant information and remembering the main ideas. Their revising task performance indicated a larger number of global corrections (which are the most difficult to make). © 1997 Academic Press Limited

Paging and scrolling were compared as to their relative suitability for determining which part of a body of information is to be displayed on a screen. Unpracticed subjects performed three different tasks (word reading, line searching, sorting) with both modes of operation. The subjects also rated the suitability of the two modes of operation for each task. Paging was preferred by inexperienced users and it resulted in better performance on the sorting task.
