REDES DE VIGILANCIA SISMICA Y VIGILANCIA DE TSUNAMIS Seismic and tsunami monitoring networks

The impact of the natural phenomena on the world-wide population is every more important due to the growth of the population; in addition this one is concentrated in coastal zones, so the tsunami risk in- creases. In the Pacific ring of fire they operate international, national and regional tsunami alert sys- tems. In this chapter the evolution and the operation of these tsunami alert systems are explained and a tsunami protection measures in order to mitigate their effects on the population are proposed.

[Show full abstract] when each failure occurs; (5) in what way does each failure matter; (6) what can be done to predict or prevent each failure; and (7) what should be done if a suitable proactive task cannot be found. SNL's RCM experiences: (1) acid exhaust system - (a) reduced risk of system failure (safety and operational consequences), (b) reduced annual correctiv maintenance hours from 138 in FY06 to zero in FY07, FY08, FY09, FY10 and FY11 so far, (c) identified single point of failure, mitigated risk, and recommended a permanent solution; (2) fire alarm system - (a) reduced false alarms, which cause costly evacuations, (b) precented 1- to 2-day evacuation by identifying and obtaining a critical spare for a network card; (3) heating water system - (a) reduced PM hours on fire-tube boilers by 60%, (b) developed operator tasks and PM plan for modular boilers, which can be applied to many installations; and (4) GIF source elevator system - (a) reduced frequency of PM tasks from 6 months to 1 year, (b) established predictive maintenance task that identified overheating cabinet and prevented potential electrical failure or fire.

From education to impact: the effect of messaging on environmental conditions

Background / Purpose: Education to change or discontinue depreciative behavior is a primary intervention for protecting park resources and preserving experiential quality. When effectively applied, education has the potential to mitigate use-related impacts to park resources in a way that is unobtrusive and sometimes even enhances experiential quality. This is particularly true for environmental impacts that may take years to reflect changed visitor behavior. Study of cairns and their disturbance by visitors in Acadia National Park provides a unique opportunity to overcome these difficulties. Visitors to Gorham Mountain in Acadia were treated with a range of educational messages, based on multiple theories of effective communication, to discourage cairn disturbance. Main conclusion: The condition of cairns before and after each treatment was monitored and their effects analyzed. Educational messages are demonstrated to be effective interventions for protecting park resources.

Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays using a Novel Method to Select their Settings

This study presents a new method to select the settings of directional overcurrent relays. First, a new selection criterion of pickup currents is adopted. It results in discrete pickup current values, which mitigate the selectivity constraints effect on the minimisation of time multiplier settings. The initial values are then increased gradually to find the final solution for all of the constraint equations. The proposed method is tested for three networks: 8-bus system, IEEE 14-bus system and IEEE 30-bus system.
