Though Chile is cut off through geographical considerations from the mainstreams of knowledge in the corrosion protection field,there are several small centres of investigation, research and development that may be the nuclei for future growth. Engineers there have been forced to develop their own methods and have in many cases been remarkably successful. After a recent stay in Chile, which included a wide coverage of the industrial scene, Dr. Hoar presents a firmly outlined picture of the ‘corrosion situation’.

Failure of Tieback Wall Anchors due to Corrosion

Tieback anchors for a sheet pile retaining wall failed due to corrosion resulting in the near collapse of the wall. The sheet pile retaining wall, with a sloping backfill, was designed with drainage backfill and grouted anchors angled down at 20 degrees from horizontal. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate staged construction and to estimate the lateral forces imposed on the adjacent building foundations. The contractor deviated from the specifications in several respects and the owner accepted a credit in return for eliminating corrosion protection from the sheeting and anchors. Two years after completion of the wall, the owner notified the engineer that several anchors had failed. Investigation revealed that up to 25% of the anchor's cross section was lost in just two years due to corrosion. Installation damage was also identified as a possible contributing factor in the failure. The problem was corrected by excavating to expose the anchors, replacing the corroded length of the anchor rods, providing corrosion protection, replacing a portion of the backfill with approved material, installing isolation pads under the anchor bearings, and implementing drainage improvements.

Corrosion remains an ongoing problem for power generators. To date, the industry has spent, and will continue to spend, millions of dollars on a wide range of corrosion protection measures. Cathodic protection is one of the proven technologies for controlling corrosion. Power plants using this process reduce the economic impact of power plant corrosion considerably.

Corrosion and corrosion protection in high pressure technology Starting from a number of conventional types of containers and sealing elements the authors present a review of typical corrosion phenomena to be taken account of in the pressure range up to 5000 bars. It is shown in this context that in certain cases it is not yet possible to make available to the designing engineer the theoretical bases which would enable these corrosions to be kept under control. This is why the solution of problems typical to high pressure and high temperatur ranges has still to rely on empirics. As to corrosion protection the following means can be applied: lining; internal tube; plated sheet; floating internal vessel; bard facing.

These sensors utilize the most advanced electrochemical techniques to provide meaningful data for quick and accurate corrosion diagnosis and are expected to play increasingly important roles on various diagnostic fields in the future.

Impact of Recoating and Renewal on Reliability of Corroded Hull Plating of Double Hull Tankers

[Show full abstract] with regard to corrosion control are stated. Maintenance and repair of double hull tankers are briefly outlined. The effect of the recoating process on the plate reliability (conditional) and the plate renewal on the plate reliability (conditional and total) are studied for a plate element subjected to uniaxial compression (ultimate) and lateral pressure (ultimate). Results of the reliability analysis taking into account the impact of recoating and renewal are given and discussed for a typical double hull tanker. These results are important in the determination of the suitable time for carrying out maintenance and repair actions for the ship under consideration. It is recommended that such an analysis be performed for ships largely affected by corrosion problems.
