With the resurgence of interest in uranium, there was a need for a review of the state of the art in milling uranium ores. This paper reviews the current processes and discusses proposed processes for the production of ″yellow-cake″ from uranium ores.

Environmental Radiological Impact of Some Portuguese Uranium Mines

An environmental radiological surveillance programme has been in progress around the most significant Portuguese uranium mines, from 1976 to 1983. A short description is given of the mines of Urgeirica (including uranium milling), Freixiosa, Pinhal de Souto and Bica. The results of the surveillance programme developed in the vicinity of these facilities are presented and the identified critical ... [Show full abstract] pathways are discussed. One of these pathways is the consumption of cabbage, which is an important component in the diet of the Portuguese population. The exposure of the critical groups, due to the intake of ²²⁶Ra through the diet, calculated from the results of this monitoring programme, range from 0.02 to 1.5 mSv.y⁻¹, for the different mines under study.

More than 8% of electrical power generated in the U. S. A. is now being supplied by nuclear plants, and plans are for continued absolute growth and a modest increase relative to other forms of generation. Demand for uranium will grow from about 17 000 tons U//3O//8 in 1976 to 39 000 tons in 1985, for a cumulative total of nearly 200 000 tons. The short-term pressures on the uranium industry to ... [Show full abstract] expand mining and milling capacity and the long-term pressures to discover more uranium and to increase basic reserves are therefore readily apparent. In the face of these estimated requirements it is clear that changes in traditional exploration, mining and milling methods must take place. Current and possible future developments in exploration, mining and processing in the United States are outlined, as are the effects of increasingly important political and environmental considerations.

Recent development in paper deinking technology

The uranium mine and mill at Žirovski vrh (RŽV), Slovenia stopped mining and milling in 1990. Mill tailings containing about 20 % moisture were transported to a disposal site called Boršt. Linking Continuous and Recycle Emulsification Kinetics for In-line mixers

In-line high-shear mixers can be used for continuous or batch dispersion operations depending on how the pipework is arranged. In our previous work () we performed a transient mass balance to establish the link in-between these two arrangements; however this model was limited to the estimation of the mode of dispersed phases yielding simple monomodal drop size distributions. In this investigation ... [Show full abstract] we expanded the previous model to account for the shape of the whole drop size distribution. The new model was tested by performing experiments under different processing conditions and using two highly viscous dispersed phases which yield bimodal drop size distributions. The results for the continuous arrangement experiments were fit using two log-normal functions and the results for the recycle arrangement by implementing the log-normal function in the previously published mass balance. The new model was capable of predicting the d32 for different emulsification times with a mean absolute error of 12.32%. The model presented here was developed for liquid blends, however the same approach could be used for milling or de-agglomeration operations.

The main application of concrete waste is its use as a coarse aggregate in concretes. Recycled concrete fines can be also used in concrete mixtures as fine aggregates or fillers. The paper describes an efficient activation method of recycled concrete fines to obtain technological, economical and ecological benefits. [Show full abstract] to various experiments the addition of superplasticizer into the mill speeds up grinding process. The present investigation shows that adding 0.5% by mass of recycled concrete fines allows obtaining higher specific area at the same processing time. Use of the prepared filler in SCC increases compressive strength more than 10% in compare with SCC containing limestone powder and mechanically activated recycled concrete fines.
