... The modern concept of empowerment is increasingly defined as strengthening the capabilities and the selfreliance of individuals [38]. We use Aubel's definition, who describes empowerment as 'the ability of individuals or groups to improve capacities, to critically analyse situations and to take actions to improve those situations' [39]. ...

Background In general during pregnancy, women are aware of the importance of good diet quality, interested in nutrition, and receptive to changing dietary intake. However, adherence to dietary guidelines is sub-optimal. A pregnant woman’s first information source regarding nutrition information is her midwife. Healthy nutrition promotion by midwives may therefore be very promising, but midwives face multiple barriers in providing nutritional support. Empowering pregnant women to improve their diet quality is expected to improve their health. Therefore an empowerment intervention has been developed to improve diet quality among pregnant women. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of Power 4 a Healthy Pregnancy (P4HP). P4HP aims to empower pregnant women to have a healthier diet quality. Methods/design This study applies a mixed methodology consisting of a non-blinded cluster randomized trial with an intervention (P4HP) group and a control group and a process evaluation. Midwifery practices, the clusters, will be randomly allocated to the intervention arm ( n = 7) and control arm ( n = 7). Participating women are placed in intervention or control conditions based on their midwifery practice. Each midwifery practice includes 25 pregnant women, making 350 participants in total. Health related outcomes, diet quality, empowerment, Sense of Coherence, Quality of Life, and Self-Rated Health of participants will be assessed before (T0) and after (T1) the intervention. The process evaluation focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration, facilitators, and barriers, and consists of in-depth interviews with midwives, dieticians and pregnant women. Discussion This study is the first to evaluate an empowerment intervention to improve diet quality in this target population. This mixed method evaluation will contribute to knowledge about the effectiveness and feasibility regarding diet quality, empowerment, health-related outcomes, multidisciplinary collaboration, facilitators and barriers of the empowerment intervention P4HP. Results will help inform how to empower pregnant women to achieve improved diet quality by midwives and dieticians. If proven effective, P4HP has the potential to be implemented nationally and scaled up to a long-term trajectory from preconception to the postnatal phase. Trial registration The trial is prospectively registered at the Netherlands Trial Register ( NL9551 ). Date registered: 19/05/2021.

... Such a project as found in Flanders is the research of 'Bind-Kracht' (empowerment and linking against poverty), also presented at the conference. 'Bind-Kracht' is a Flemish organization consisting of researchers, tutors and people living in poverty who want to improve the quality of social work with people living in poverty [see also Driessens & Van Regenmortel, 2006;Vansevenant et al., 2008;Driessens et al. in this issue]. To support social workers and their organizations to deal with the changing population of clients in Antwerp (Belgium), and the fast increase of vulnerable people with another ethnic background, the Bind-Kracht team started research on the possibility of adapting their approach of strengths-based social work to people with different ethnic backgrounds, with special attention to the experiences of migrants in poverty. ...

Most European cities have been, and still are, faced with a strong increase of inhabitants with other ethnic backgrounds. Globalization has increased the processes of migration during the last three decades, especially to urban areas. These processes are changing cities and their social landscape profoundly, not least because many migrants are being confronted with structural social exclusion. Consequently this evolution becomes one of the most important challenges for urban social work. One of the targets of social work research in an urban context in Europe is the need to interculturalize the way social work operates. In this article I explore how this increasing ethnic diversity is becoming one of the main challenges for urban social work. Specific methodologies are required to reach empowerment objectives with the diversity of citizens in urban contexts. Reflecting on a selection of cases, the article explores theoretical and methodological challenges for urban social work research.
... This resulted in a book for social workers containing perceptions on the living conditions and life experiences of people in poverty and empowering social service relations. Based on this book, training programmes, working and reflection tools were developed to support social workers and volunteers who work with vulnerable groups (Vansevenant et al., 2008;Driessens, 2009). We developed methods of strengths-based helping relationships and group work, reflection instruments for dealing with tensions and roles (of social workers and clients), methods for client-centred cooperation or case-management and tailored care. ...

From the North to the South of Europe, embedded in local contexts, we can find interesting projects of cooperative knowledge production in social work settings. In this article we present case studies from research projects with social workers in Helsinki, Trento and Antwerp. We describe how the new paradigm of knowledge production (Mode 2) is implemented in this kind of social work research. We look for the specificity of the research process in these projects, the benefits for the researchers and the practitioners, and the necessary conditions to get satisfactory results.

Peeters J. The place of social work in sustainable development: Towards ecosocial practiceEcological questions are seldom seen to concern the social dimension and, accordingly, to be of direct concern to mainstream social work practice. However, the current ‘social-ecological crisis’ demands a major social transition to a sustainable society that touches all dimensions of our lives. So, social work cannot escape this process. This article argues that social work can engage in this transition starting from its social mission and tradition, provided it includes the ecological environment as an important element of practice and develops an ecosocial practice centred on empowerment, social capital formation and resilience building as both a contribution to and part of a process of social-political change.
