Abstract
The acceptability and inevitability of automated technical processing are discussed. How automated record-keeping will change the way in which records are kept and the records themselves is given attention, and the effect of these changes on library organization and productivity is outlined.
America is becoming an information society due to spectacular developments in electronic and information technology. Dramatic changes are occurring in libraries as electronic technology impacts every major area of library activity. The greatest impact is being felt by technical services staff. Thc work environment is drastically changing. As the need for professionals in technical services declines and experts increasingly advocate the merger of technical and public services, technical services librarians must take the lead in molding their future and he willing to adapt to the changing environment.
