Terms such as praefectus praesidii or φρύρα ρχοζ among others, have been used in order to describe the duties of the Republican officer in charge of a garrison settled in a town, independently of his personal status. A close link between garrisoning and the logistics of the Roman army and, up to a certain point, foreign politics has been equally established. In fact, those garrison chiefs may have played an active political role on behalf of Roman Imperialism, whilst facing the non-Roman towns they were in charge of.
